Last Sunday night I experienced the scariest moment of my life. My 17 month old son had a seizure. I never seen anyone have a seizure before and it was the scariest thing I have ever seen. He stayed in the hospital from Sunday until Thursday. The doctors say that the seizure as caused by a high fever. It is called a feverall seizure and is not harmful at all it is just very scary to watch. But that it can not cause someone to have brain damage and swallow their toungue like epilepsy. H said that some kids have it once and never have it again and some kids have it everytime they get a high fever. The only explanation they could give as to why his fever was so high was that he had some sort of virus but they werent sure exactly what it was. Have you ever heard of a feverall seizure? Has your child or anyone you know ever experienced one? I had never heard of it before and it was very scary.

That is very scary! I'm glad that your little one is OK. My oldest was about 16 months the 2nd time he was in the hospital. He had pneumonia and was admitted with a 104 fever. Later that night as I was lying in the bed with him he had a seizure. I'm not going to lie, it scared the crap out of me! I called in the nurse who informed me that it was probably due to the high fever. He has not had a seizure since then and he is now 4. For quite ahile after that whenever he would get a fever I would basically sleep on his floor in his room at night and just be plain paranoid. Eventually it got better. Good luck to you and your little one. I hope that he feels better soon!

Thank you. It makes me feel a little better to know that your son did not have another seizure. But I am sorry you had to go through that it is one of the scariest things imaginable. My son just got out of the hospital and he has not had anymore fever but I have been sleeping in the bed with him at night. I can't sleep otherwise. I am sure that eventually things will get back to normal and I will quit being so paranoid but i would rather be safe than sorry.

YAY! for getting out of the hospital! That must mean your boy is on the mend! And I don't blame you for sleeping with him. The one thing that saved me from ALOT of sleepless nights was a monitor called the AngelCare monitor. It has a sensor pad that you place under the mattress and will give an alarm if your baby/child stops breathing for more than 20 seconds. I slept with receiver next to my head for a LONG time. :)

That must have been terrified and so confused with what was happening to your 17 month old son. I have three children: a 14 year old son, a 2 year old son and a 6 month old daughter. I haven't ever experience anything like one of my children having a seizure during a fever. My toddler son has a shunt inside his head and my biggest worry is something might go wrong with it. I have a friend and she is the mom of four children. I know three of her children suffer from epilepsy. So that is really scary for her. One of my friends had a colleague that had epilepsy. She began a few seizures when she was at work and that had been frightening for customers and colleagues. Good luck to you and your son.

Hello KRC, I suggest you must take your child for further examination to determine what caused the seizure. If it is caused by some virus,it is better to detect and have the medication at this early stage not to keep the seizure coming again and again. I've seen some kids having seizures and it's not scary, but, more of pity. I wanted to cry every time i see a kid suffering from that illness. So,the earlier the better for you to determine the real cause of your baby's seizure. Let's just hope for the best result...prayer is the best weapon too. Have a good day and happy weekend

This monday my daughter had a seizure she is 12 months and one week old. To me it was also very scary. The doctor that treated her said the exactly same thing they said to you and i'm also clueless. One thing i did hear different from this doctor is that it might be genetic. Also a friend has the same problem with his son. Her sister had it when she was a kid. My sister also had it.

My son is almost 21 months and he just had a seizure on Thursday night. Everything you said is exactly what I was told, except for the high fever part. They told me that he didn't have to have a high fever, but it was caused by the fever spiking very quickly. They told me that it was caused by a virus, but this is now Saturday evening and his fever is still here. It keeps rising and falling. Right before he had his seizure, his temperature was 99.7 and when we got to the ER, it was 101.9. I don't understand how that could cause a seizure, but it was very scary!

It isn't that uncommon actually. Little ones are prone to this durring a high fever. Babies also seem to have a higher tollerence for higher fevers than loder kids or adults too. I have had it happen a few times, it's pretty alarming, but suprisingly not as dangerous as one might think.

In our country when that happens, folks would call that "convulsion", a seizure caused by very high fever. Next time it happens, have presence of mind. Make sure that you put something cold on the head. That can be dangerous and might cause damage to the brain if not immediately treated.

Hi! I'm glad that your son is already okay. As a nurse, i have seen a lot of patients having episodes of seizure. When you encounter one, you must first protect the person's head from hitting a hard surface like the floor or walls. Be sure to place a cushion under his head. Seizures are common in babies when they have very high fever so it is very important to always monitor the baby's temperature from time to time and refer immediately to his pediatrician. =)
