I deal with this problem everyday in my university where majority of the professors are from other countries. The biggest problem is the accent. I had an embarrassing moment with my human resources professor last summer who was from Vietnam. The man was nicely asking me "did you sign up for the team". I understood, "did you suck up for the tea?" I felt so confused as to why he asked me such a question. I did not know what to answer, but later I went little close to him to hear exactly what he was saying. Then I felt embarrassed when I got the clue to the real question. Another time I had an Austrian professor. I said hi to him on the first day of the class near the classroom door. He asked me, "Are you in my marketing class also?" Yes, I was taking two classes with him. But I heard, "are you making me wholesome?" It keeps happening every quarter. I will not blame them for anything. Many people have accent and it is very normal. But when it comes to directly living with a foreigner it is usually the cultural differences that can create a clash. While one will want to do it in his cultural way, another will say,"in my country we do it in the way".

Yes, when i learned in Uni, i met the same problem. Due to the different accent, we can not understand each other very well. People who from Vietnam speak english is hard to understand, and sometimes we will ask them repeat again and again. I agree with you, the accent is a big barrier when we live together with foreigners.
