Where are your favourite musicians from?

Canada

My question to you is where are your favourite musicians from mostly. Do you notice that most of your favourite bands are from the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, or where exactly? And if you want to be more specific, what state or province or city even do most of your favourite bands come from? For me, most of my favourite bands are from the United States, and as far as what state, it would probably have to be California but I am not 100% sure about that.

And those that I just listed is just a small fraction of the music that I like, I like anything that is nice, regardless of nationality. In fact, the reason why most people's favourite bands and singers are from US, UK or Canada because these are the biggest recording market in the world and English is the most common language in the world and due to the attitude of the American that think the world only revolve around US only. Over here (UK/Europe), I can hear all kind of music from different culture and race, but most of the time, I will not get to know the name of the singer or composer as they are not famous (again due to the mainstream media revolve around the US market only). Besides that, most people will only focus on the outtest layer of a song (the singer) and don't bother to find out who are the composer and lyricist behind the song.

Yeah that is very true! That all makes perfect sense. English is the most common language spoken in the world, so that makes sense. And the United States has the largest population of English speakers in the world too, so it makes sense why the dominate the music market. Canada and the United Kingdom also have a decent amount of people, so it also makes sense why there are a lot of good musicians from those places as well.

Actually it has nothing to do with the language spoken and population. It depends on the spending power of the country. As an example, the second biggest music market in the world is actually Japan. Follow by UK, France and Germany. These 5 countries (include US) make up of about 70-80% of the world music market, with US having about 35%. And if I remember correctly, country like Russia, Spain, Mexico, India, Brazil have sold more recorded music than some English speaking country like Canada and Australia. The reason why we all think there are more good musician from US, UK or Canada is because that is the common language that we used, that doen't mean there is no good musicial else where. As an example, one of the vocalist in my Song Zuying, I only get to know her due to Olympic 2008 and I think she is as good as my favourite female vocalist Sarah Brightman who I personally think has a better vocal than Celine Dion. Here is another story. A few months ago, while I was on my way to visit a friend of mine in Nottingham, I passby this market in the city centre of Nottingham. Over there, there is a man I assume to be a Mayan performing a Mayan traditional music using a flute. The music is so nice that I tempted to buy a concert recording which he is a member of the background musicial in that concert, but due to time concern and I don't have much cash with me at that time, I leave with empty hand.

Actually I like different type of music, except maybe heavy metal and hard rock. And the lists is not complete. These are just the most notable one and I like quite a number of their song/music/lyric. There are some other song/music by other people that I like as well. Like I said in the post below, I give credit to the composer and lyricist for producing a good song. A singer will be nothing if the music or the lyric is bad, unless you are a very good vocalist that can sing without accompaniment and words, ie choir, a cappella, opera etc. but definitely not pop, rock or r&b.

Awesome! A nice variety of countries for your favourite music I can see. It looks like England is where the most of your favourite bands come from. And United States closely behind. Also, I always thought Ricky Martin was from Spain, atleast Im pretty sure that he was born in Spain though anyways.

Ah, yes I found out that Ricky Martin is in fact from Puerto Rico. Sorry about that, I must be thinking of some other latin guy that is from Spain haha. And its always good to like a lot of different types of music and people from different places! :)

I think Ricky Martin born in Puerto Rico as well, if not Central America, definitely not from Europe. I live in England, so obviously most of my favourite band will be British. Since my first language is English, I listen to American song as well, or should I listen to Russian/Arabic/Finnish/African song because I can't understand a single word? Granted I did took Chinese as my second language back in my GCE and took private class for Japanese when I am still in the school and I like Japanese anime, but I am not familiar with Japanese and Chinese bands, so there are few in my list as I do not know who sang those songs that I like. And I like Latin song because they have the joyful, festive and passionate mood which other pop culture lack of, but again I don't know any band's name, because they will not appear in our daily local news, do they?

I like all of those bands you mentioned, and find it interesting how your music tastes vary for English bands and bands in general. I especially like Sublime from your list, great stuff! :D
