I am working on an article right now about the most notorious serial killers, and I had to stop! I just got done reading about "The Monster of the Andes" and I could not believe what I was reading! I'm not going to go into his whole story--but he's what I couldn't believe...When he was captured he confessed to over 300 murders (mostly children) and said that if he were ever on the streets again he would kill more...and guess what! He was released after 20 years!!!! How can someone who killed 300 children, and was still a threat to more, NOT get the death sentence, let alone be released from prison??

That's absolutely disgusting that a confessed serial child molester and killer is set free after only 20 years. He should have been executed or at least imprisoned with no chance of parole. This happened in South America though so the way they do things down there isn't the same as here in the States. If it was here, he never would have seen the light of day again. It sounded like the country that had him in prison (Ecuador) was tired of having him and they just took him to the Columbian border and let him go just to rid themselves of him. It's hard to believe that any person or government could be that callous and irresponsible. There is no doubt that he went out and committed more rapes and murders of children, but I guess the Ecuadorans decided that as long as he was raping and killing in some other country, it was ok. Unbelievable...

This makes a lot more sense now that I read that this happened in Ecuador, however it is still wrong, and seems like these people don't have common sense or truly want to protect their people.

that's because when this guy did all of those killings is was back when life was not life. so they almost always let people out of prison after a while. don't be so surprised. this kind of thing happens more often then you would care to know. i have been studying and reading about serial killers for years and years. it's really sick and sad what these people do. and most of them are really smart people. what a waste of life.

This did not happen all that long ago, this happened in 1980. And murderers with smaller victim counts that lived years and years before him were executed. So it makes no sense that he would be released.

Hiii Lily... Sorry to reply this late... But were you reading about Pedro Lopez? I have read a similar article with the heading 'The monster of Andes'... Are you talking about the same? I have read the whole article and it seems that this guy had a troubled childhood, which made him a killer.. He became a psychotic since childhood itself... I am not defending him, of course... All I want to say is, parents should pay attention to how they bring up and treat their kids... Thanks!

Yes Lily, I agree with you. Troubled childhood can not be an excuse for taking so many lives of innocent kids... And at the same time, I feel that people should plan to have children when they're sure that they are ready to bring up the kids well, from every point of view... I have read about many more such psychotics and their wrong-doings... Will be posting about them soon... have fun!

Yes I believe he is one and the same. He did have a troubled childhood, I included that in the article I wrote. But I don't think that is any kind of excuse (I know you weren't defending him!). But, like you, I wish parents would treat children better.

Yeah, unfortunately there are too many unplanned pregnancies. But I wish more people who were not ready to be (don't want to be) parents would just give their children up for adoption, it may be better for most.

He should've been charged with bank robbery--then he'd be in for life, at least in the States anyway... dr...
