I don't know about you but the only way I can afford to buy many of the things I'd like to have or need is by lay-away. Christmas is a nightmare, I have 15 grandkids to buy for. I haven't bought gifts for our grown children for years, until I take care of their kids, I'm broke. My husband and I haven't exchanged gifts for 5 years. To make large purchases I have to depend on windfall money, which rarely happens, or I have to put aside a bill, which happens too frequently.
The best solution for me is lay-away. In the shopping district, in my area, there are only two stores that have lay-away. One store it too expensive and the other does not have everything I want or need. WalMart is one of the few stores that has everything. Except lay-away. I once asked a WalMart store manager why they got rid of lay-away - his answer, "How else can we encourage customers to get our credit card?" Why not indeed? WalMart orginally stated that the lay-away department was not profitable enough to keep, it was their reason to get rid of it. Sure, credit cards are more protitable, they get the interest and fees, we pay the interest and fees plus they make money because we shop there. I don't want or need a credit card, I want lay-away.
I suggest that we start a letter/email writing campaign to WalMart. Let them know that if WalMart wants our continued patronage, they reinstate lay-away.
What do you say, are you in? Will you help?
