Because his hair breaks the scissors and his nails destroy the nailcutters.
I mean, have you given it a thought? If he is Superman, then nothing about him is destructible unless around a Kryptonite, right? His hair doesn't get singed when he is in the middle of a raging fire, so how can a pair of scissors cut his hair, or how can nailcutters cut his nails?
I'm sure I'm not the only who's had to ponder on this.
So how come Clark Kent doesn't have hair that touches the ground, or nails that grew so long it coiled? Or is it just part of his being Superhuman that makes his hair and nails stop growing at a certain length?
It is fiction but sure does challenge the logical mind.
Superman is a mystery! But I certainly love his bangs.

I don't care where they say he lives, Superman resides in Hollywood, where anything and everything is possible!
That's my standard response whenever anyone says, "Hey! That's can't be done!" when referring to something from a movie. Yep, anything can be done in Hollywood. I think we should all move there. Then, if we don't want to age, we don't have to. If we want to leap tall buildings at a single bound, we can.
I've often wondered where he goes when he has to use the bathroom. Can you imagine Superman sitting on a comode?

Hahaha that's so funny there. i never saw him pee as well, except when eating hamburger / hotdogs when reeve was the cast. wow maybe i could make that movie too. only if i still have my game.

HOLLYWOOD is the ultimate explanation! everything can be explained by Hollywood.
Now I hope Clark Kent levitates on top of the commode when he poos otherwise he'd break practically all toilet bowls he comes across.
I wonder what happens to his bathroom if he gets constipated.

I did see this one episode of superman (or was it a movie? I cant remember) where superman cut his hair on his face and head with his laser vision (since it comes from him it's logical that he can hurt or cut himself, including hair and nails), presumably he can also cut his nails with it if this is true as well.

Perhaps his body parts have different levels of getting hurt by his own powers. Inferior portions include hair, nails, and probably teeth!
I don't know what happens though if he punches his own abdomen. Would he hurt his tummy? or would he break his fist?

Lol, I don't know why he would punch himself, but yea I think he can hurt himself.
There is one episode of Lois and Clark where Clark shaves using his laser vision (that's where I got it from), this was taken from the comic I believe, so it is probably correct as it is how the original writers wanted it.

I don't know. Perhaps a meteor rock that would cause him to self-inflict pain?
I adored Lois and Clark when I was younger too. The one which starred Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, right? I've always been a Superman fan.

I don't know how, until he was able to control these things, they didn't break things, sometimes they even showed things like that in the comics - tho I don't know why they'd break the scissors, since the human hand doesn't have to strength to do it, they should just stop the scissors - but now - he just uses his heat vision to cut them... I'm sure he could make a super mirror to do his hair

Oh, well, I don't watch Smallville - in the comic the very idea that Lana would be a witch would be ridiculous - but they would sometimes address it in the comics where someone would take a scissor to Sup's (Clark generally) hair and the scissors would be seen breaking, just snapping off mid-blade - stupid.
When he was a baby, they'd show Ma Kent getting baby Clark to use his heat vision to "cut" the thread on the blanket - but I don't see how the baby could have that much control - oh well, logic plays very little part in these things ya know.

Yes and anything can happen in a TV series!
I know it's stupid to take fiction too seriously. But I must admit it's fun trying to explain some unexplainable things.

Hi elic...
I don't know what's wrong with me, but it's been a rough day, my eyes are tired, and my stomach is growling. Maybe that's why I didn't quite get what you mean. It's probably me.
Anyway, I saw season 4 episode 8 of Smallville (it's a TV series showing Superman as a teenager). Lana Lang, who was possessed by a 1600 spirit of a witch, came to Clark Kent's house to cut some strands of hair for her potion which needed a hair of a virgin.
But when she got the chance to, her scissors broke apart. She made up some alibis why she needed the hair so Clark voluntarily plucked one strand himself.
I saw it after I did this discussion so finally I realized that they did put this matter into consideration. It's just that, still it doesn't explain how Clark Kent gets his regular haircut.

The one that always drove me crazy was The Incredible Hulk. He was a skinny, short man until he went into a rage & then he exploded into The Hulk. The buttons popped off his shirt, his pants slid up his legs & tore just a little & his belt & shoes still fit. As much as he expanded, why wasn't he naked at the end???

Now I can read minds! How cool is that?
Look at it the bright side. You definitely wouldn't wanna see what's underneath the overstretched boxers!

Have you ever seen the old black & white superman shows? I've always sondered why he ducked for a bullet..maybe he just didn't want his hair messed up, eh?
For haircuts and trimming nails, I guess they'd have to use kryptonite tools. That's the only thing he can't stand up against.

Hi there!
Black and white superman shows? Awww....I probably was still a fetus that time. Too bad I missed all the fun, huh?
Ducking was probably his only means of exercising his hips so he grabs every opportunity to duck and yep maybe he didn't wanna mess up his hair especially that he couldn't get a regular haircut that often.
Producers should read this discussion so the next time they'd make a Superman movie or show, they;d feature kryptonite-based scissors, nailcutters, manicure sets, even dental floss!

Yes, fair enough. Besides, we do not really know how things work for Kryptonians right?
Have a great day!

Hello there theresa,
Long time no chat. there was this Episode in the Justice League where he was accidentally send to the future and the SUN wasn't around in the Solar System. he had no powers and start growing hair and beared and fight off the wolves.
but you're right, this is just fiction. even in the batman beyond series he still exist in the future. well, that's why fiction is so cool

The beauty of fiction is that no amount of explanation can ever justify the unexplainable. In fact there's no need to explain anything. Whoever attempts to only ends up getting confused himself.
But since some movies put more realism into the character of Superman, I guess they should put these two simple factors in mind, don't you think? :D
