Had I completed my engineering graduation to work in a call center?

Hi friends. I believe sure its a familier topic to you all. I'm an engineering graduate. I got placed in a reputed company. But cause of the recession, I had to wait for my job indefinitely. In this mean time, many of my friends joined into call centers and BPOs. I just couldn't accept this my friends. Had we studied engineering to become a telephone operator or a sales person? Then what is the meaning of the engineering degree my friend? I believe I didn't hurt anyone's feelings my friends. But I just wish, you could comment on this my friends.

At least 50% people in USA are doing different job than qualifications they have. They have kids to feed and bills to pay, life is about making choices, sometimes the choices are not what we want to do, but forced by life to do...

i can relate very much to what you're saying. but i guess some people are ACTUALLY happy with the job. if that's the case, then there's not much to be regretful about. if it's not, then i guess it's understandable that it's only wise to be practical and realistic these days. but that doesn't mean you can't go for the dream job you want. maybe at the right time, when the right opportunity comes. and chances are, it will. just don't stop trying.

My friend, sure I would get my dream job. Some may've their dream jobs in this field too. I'm fine with it. But I'm just worried that, why to waste all their knowledge in this field.

Well my friend, you are the only one who is struggling. I have two engineering graduates, both have finished bio technology, who are working as Medical Representatives under me. In fact I did not want to take them, because I felt that they are over qualified for the job. But both of them, wanted this job, so that they may get some experience. So think of your present job as an experience. The bad time will not go on continuously, the good times have to come. Life is a cycle, you are having some bad time now, that is why you are working in a BPO, the good times are not far, and you will get a job to your liking.

I understand your anguish, but just think, some thing is better than nothing. At least you have got a job, and you might get some salary through which you can run your life, without bothering your parents. If there is no job, you may have to depend on your parents even for small things.

No , you people don't understand actually, BPO doesn't give any experience to Engineering sector, and BPO doesn't require a degree... Engineering heat has nothing to do with BPO and its night shift jobs(U.S. Process for indians)... Studying terms for 4 years and working in a BPO??

If only you have a choice but now that it is hard to find job I think you need to be practical. Accept any jobs that come to you and it also an experience for you. Don't be disappointed who knows you can use your course in the future.

hi rock__me__ in yes if you want to eat that is, I know what you mean , you want to work in the profession you trained for, but if its like it is here in the Us in Ca. my son is going to have to bite the bullet and take what he can get while waiting for a job as computer programmer. He doesnt want to do this either, but he is going to run out of money before long and must take a lesser job to eat. This economy here in the US is awful, its specially bad in Ca and the cost of living here is out of sight.cannot win. I would really in all conscience take a lesser job rather than go hungry. Your degree will still stand you in good stead, you have the learning tucked up inside your brains.

I hear you. I have a degree in education. The year I graduated there were no jobs and I worked in a factory then ran a bakery/deli. I finally got a teaching job in another state, but now I am staying with my injured son and I think I just got a job at a nursing home in housekeeping. Seems like a waste, but if we are diligent it will all pay off in the end. We have to do the best we can to make it.

My brother finished with his master's degree in engineering in 2007 and he is not working in his field at this time. In fact, he has not been able to find a career in engineering since he graduated. For a time he worked in a company doing scanning work and when he was laid off from that he took some time off and is now working for a local company on an assembly line. He didn't spend all of that money for college to work in the field that he is in right now, but with the economy, it is nearly impossible to find a career in the field that he studied. So, you are definitely not alone.

Well, you are not alone. Many people are working on call center with different degrees. The thing is we have so many graduates and professionals but there is less work available for such specific field or profession. Working in a call center is indeed a good option for earnings considering that if you have the skill, it does not matter what profession you have or course you have taken.

Sucks man. I have also completed my engg very recently, but since I have other plans, I decided to work till those plans gave shape to my future. Now being an active person, I couldn't even imagine sitting at home. So I started working. The profession I chose is not for a fresher. It requires a lot of experience. My friends asked me if I was joining a call center cos it pays quick bucks without any problem. But instead, I chose to join the same college from where graduated as an assistant to a professor. I'm teaching the very same subjects that I had studied when I was a student and I think it's very good cos I can stay in touch with my subject and at the same time I enjoy being in the college and still feel like a student. It's awesome. I know of people who do an engg or study one course of field only to go on and work in some other field. The experience is not bad, but such people are surely the ones who do not have serious goals in their lives. All they want is a job which will feed them and their family. bourne

sometimes we need to be practical, because its difficult to look to a job. I am also an engineering graduate but all my past work had not been related to my course. you will learn to appreciate your job in time, or you can work while looking for yopur dream job, so that you will not waste time.

Working in a call center / BPO is not that bad my friend. I'm a licensed interior designer and I previously worked for a call center. I must say that I didn't regret working in a BPO company because of the following: 1. The experience is all worth it. I had my share of experience in dealing with different types of customers over the phone(which made prepared since I'm currently dealing with different types clients who will scrutinize my designs). 2. If you work in a call center, you're not just an operator / salesman...you're an agent ready to assit the other person in the other end of the line who is in need. It's not a joke being an agent since there are series of trainings you have to go through before you get a certification. These trainings in fact are sometimes even consdered information overload and will somehow help you in the future. If you have a background in engineering for example, they usually place you in a certain account that would need someone with engineering background. 3. Aside from the fact that pay is really good compared to a licensed professional, there are INCENTIVEs..and I mean, monetary incentives such as commisions, gadget awards which you don't get in a non BPO company. 4. Professional growth is fast and you get promoted within six months depending on your work performance. 5. It will also teach you to speak confidently in english :) You don't have to stay working in a BPO industry forever. It's really up to you if you want to pursue your profession. You can opt to work in a call center industry for the meantime because of the recession then look for something that will suit your profession later on.

Now, that is a very sad situation. I really hope that they will move their a£££££s, to get you going in your engineering job. But in the meantime, keep this call centre job, it is better than nothing. I wish you good luck and just be patient, your time will come. TATA.

you can choose whatever job you want as long as you have no responsibilities. but mind you rock_me_in, after graduation and you have exerted all your effort looking for your dream job and nothing else happens, you'll start to consider other offers. especially when your running out of money for a long period of time. more so if you already have a family. you cant let your kids starve because you haven't found your dream job yet. not unless you are an extraordinary person. good post rock_me_in!

Working in a call center is better than no job at all. Of course you can always give up the job once your chance to find another engineering related job comes. I've known many people of different courses doing call center jobs and they seem to be getting more than employment in their actual line of job. I know a communication arts graduate who offered only PHP12,000 to work in a media outfit. But he did not accept but rather accepted the offer of Call Center for PHP18,000.

I too am studying engineering now and I think its a waste to study 4 years of Engineering and work in some BPOs .I think you need to look upon some Govt.jobs .Nowadays there are a lot of govt. jobs examinations taking place. If your qualified enough you can get the job. All the best for your future.

recession is hitting hard one almost everyone except the lucky few! i've even completed engg. in aircraft maintenance but here i am learning to play the guitar on my own! yeah grab any opportunity not to waste time and jump back to what you want when there's an opening. or sit back at home and do something you like or creative(like i'm learning to play the guitar) and wait for for the next opening in your line of study!
