Football Rituals

I just watched my football team lose by 3 points last night. Of course, it was a rotten thing to see. If you are a football fan then you know how bad it is to see your team get so close and then lose. I will admit that it has made me feel awful and has ruined the rest of the day for me each time. I know that it may be weird to be like that, but it happens. The game of football really sucks a fan in and can even make you do weird or unusual things that are not the norm, such as sitting a certain way, or wearing certain clothes while watching a game in the hopes that it will bring your team victory. Once, I sat in the bathroom during most of the game because my team started winning when I took a bathroom break. What are some unusual things you have done during watching football that may have seemed weird, but were important for you at the time because you thought it would help your team win? Has watching your team lose ever ruined your day, or week, or even year? I am looking forward to reading your comments.

I appreciate your honesty. I am so glad I am not the only one who does these things.

Who picks heads on the coin flip!?!?!?!?!? Tails never fails buddy. Tails never fails.
To the question though, I don't have a ritual for any sport but my buddy has one for basketball. Everytime the Raps look down and out he puts on this shaggy looking jersey he got for $16 of a player who no longer plays on the team. The team goes on an incredible run, and they wind up winning the game. It has never failed us yet. Even worked the other night against the Lakers, now THAT is a powerful jersey.
As far as football goes though, no rituals that I'm aware of.

Hello. I was thinking the same thing. Who does pick heads?? That is a powerful jersey. Rituals and weird things that people do to help their favorite team win are funny and word all at the same time. I find that I do things like that even though I am aware that they may seem weird at the time. I don't care if it is weird when they work. I will probaly always do those kinds of things. It is so interesting to hear about what others do.

I come from a multi-generational family of game day superstitions so, yes, I have been known to do odd things in order to bend the universe to my team's will. If I do anything during a game that changes how my team is doing...whether good or bad...I can't help myself, I have to either stop doing it or keep doing it. One time I held my dog hostage on my lap for 3 quarters because they scored a touchdown the minute she jumped up there. Other times I've watched from the doorway to the kitchen...or didn't look when my team had the ball because they messed up if I was looking. Losing is a big letdown but I've never let it ruin the rest of my day or evening.

Thanks for sharing with me. I can relate to some of the things you do. I really like how you descibed your actions as "bending the universe to your teams will", what a great way to describe it. I thought this discussion would be fun because I knew there were others like me who do these kinds of things thinking they will somehow sway the outcome. Of course, it is important not to let a big loss ruin your day as you pretty much said. I know for some they do let it ruin their day. I am glad you commented because your answers were real, relatable and funny all at the same time.

Yes it has! I am a green Bay Packer fan. They have ruined alot of days! Mostly when they sucked and that was in the 1970's and 1980's! So I had a ton of bad days in nthe past! I was really upset when we lost to Tampa Bay this season! We let a rookie QB making his first start ever look like a seson QB! We played awful but it did turn us around for the rest of the season! I was bummed out when we lost ot the Cardinals in the playoffs in OT! The referees should of seen the face mask hold on Rodgers and the game should of not ened then! My biggest upsetting moment was 3 season's ago in the NFC championship game when the Packers lost in OT to the Giants! If Brett Favre didn't throw that OT interception we ould of probaly gone to the Super Bowl that year! Now Minnasota knows how that feels! Anyway a bad game makes for a bad day!

yes, as an arizona cardinals fan when the team was making their superbowl run last year- I started wearing a cardinals windbreaker/ sweater that my brother got me last christmas. it worked. but, purplerain don't feel bad; at least the vikings didn't lose the superbowl in the last minute of the game like my cards did last year. that lost still angers me no to no end!.

I am sorry that your team lost. I know it could be worse as you said, but it is just so weird how emotional a loss can make a person. I really appreciate that you shared your thoughts with me. I think the worst is when you can't find anything to do to help them. I know that you win some and lose some, but the loss is always aweful.
