I just read a discussion to say that China banned the movie Avatar. Now I have to post a new discussion because this is not true. This movie has been crazy popular in China, especially the 3D version. Although the tickets are very expensive, but many people still go to the cinema to enjoy it. The tickets are sold out in a very short time. I watched this movie on Jan.11th and this movie is still available now and today it is Jan 26. If I can buy the tickets successfully for my colleagues this weekend, then they will watch it on Saturday. I am just worried whether I can buy it since this movie is so popular. If you heard that China banned the movie Avatar, then I can tell you that this is a rumor.

So I was right in the post when I say that maybe government is not sponsoring the movie but it is not banned.
I am glad that I was right.

polachicago,
It is a known fact that mega character like James Cameron does not lack sponsors and honestly does not need China to sponsor him or his works as proven in his films like Terminator, Titanic and the current Avatar.
But, he will need China's SUPPORT in allowing his films to make it to the silver screen, period! In all honesty, I felt that there's just some impropriety on the recent article and not forgetting some opportunist trying to create a mountain from a molehill.
It is just sad to see how some personal agenda can blind people including the ones at the editing table, when they can confuse a relatively simple word. If it is really banned then I wonder why it is still being screened till the end of January for the 2D version whilst the 3D Imax will remain screening till the end of March, 2010.
I can imagine James Cameron laughing himself stupid to the bank with the premium loyalties on the 3D Imax screening. Is there any issue if you are in Cameron's shoes?
I just don't think so.
Right?

Well, apparently the 2D version has been pulled off the screens in some places from Jan 20th. The thing about China is that it is so big that it could be banned in some places and not others since it's hard to enforce a nationwide ban.
Apparently this has been reported by Hong Kong's Apple Daily as well.
Perhaps this movie is not banned in the cities where less people have been affected but govt eviction and stuff like that? Guess there's no smoke without fire...

This article is from Israeli newspaper. Should we trust Israeli to know better about China than people from China? I trust Youless, because she is from China.
When I was in Europe last fall, some people start telling me stories about USA, in fact the stories failed far away from reality...(gossip has bigger power than the true)

China is a big country, there may not be cinemas in some places. And therefore you can't count on Avatar will be shown in these places because the copyrights is expensive and therefore the tickets are expensive. But it doesn't mean that this movie is banned. Ban is unsuitable word in this issue.

So actually the people from Zhang Jia Jie are very glad because it makes their place much more famous.

Hi Youless,
What a coincident! I was on my way to a factory with my boss this afternoon, and i asked has he seen the movie AVATAR, he said he has not. I told him that Avatar is a great movie and he should see it. He then mentioned that he heard that China is banned this movie for some political reason, i can't believe it! Coz i never heard such news in the area around. Especailly in my city, we have the biggest IMAX 3D in China!
I'm glad to see this!

vivianchen,
Well, here is another example of how their own would kick their successful countryman in the butt and how China is supporting her foreign counterparts.
Frankly, I wonder if the reporter understands the word "BAN" or not in the first place and what does it mean to revolt in the first place. Is he trying to discourage people from watching the show when the show is about racial discrimination and encouraging revolt?
As oppose to China, making a commercial decision to screen the show in 3D IMAX which is a premium price and rightful justice for such a great film. As posted by Youless, the OP here, the price for IMAX is a premium compared to 2D version's screening. I just do not think there is anything against the film or James Cameron when it is being commercially motivated. As the great enterprising US counterparts use to say: "It's all about business."
I am sure you will agree with me that James Cameron is laughing himself stupid to the bank with this decision. Although, I do not know what your boss will think about the premium price he has to pay now to watch this show.

Avatar is one great movie and i also thought that this movie was banned from China. One of my officemate who had gone to China told us that this movie was banned but she doesn't know why. I also think why does a movie will get banned, maybe it has a deepest reason on it. But i am glad that It wasn't true because the movie really have a lessons to learn and a must to see by everybody.

junmae,
I think there's been a lot of hype recently that the movie Avatar being banned in China and that the reason for doing that is for the protection of China sponsored productions, which at the end of the day is nothing but misreported crap.
I feel that the word "Ban" had been used incorrectly by the original post and especially when the movie is still hitting the screens of China in 3D IMAX version. The 2D version has stopped screening because of commercial reasons, one of which is to make room for other movies to be screened. But, some reports are just twisting the facts about it being political and that it is done in favor of the much talked about Chinese movie "Confucius". I mean would you believe it that it is being done for one or two Chinese produced movies? What about Hollywood's other productions like the Book of Eli or Extraordinary Measures and etc.?
This episode has just reinforced more ideas against irresponsible freedom of speech, where it just riles up the readers and place innocent parties on the platter.

It is very nice for you to say so The one who posted the Avatar was banned in China gave me several links about this news. But as you know, I am living here and I also sent him a cinema (nearby my home) link so that he can see the movie schedule. Obviously Avatar is still available. Actually I have to help my colleagues to buy Avatar tickets in this weekend because I live nearby this cinema. I hope I can buy these tickets successfully because it's really so popular and will be sold out in a short time. They all depend on me, what a pressure

Hi Youless,
I did see that discussion also. I thought that it was horrible if they were exercising that much control in your country that you were not allowed to watch certain movies. I did not see it in the news. I'm glad that it was just a rumor and hopefully you will get to see it this weekend! Have a great day!

Didn't hear that one. I guess that's a good way to generate buzz about the movie and want people to see it even more. It could be marketing but I don't think that China would ban something that the western world likes because we trade so much between those contries. I still haven't seen it but I plan to, banned or not.

Wow...I'm glad that Avatar is not really banned in China. I just posted a comments to a discussions saying tat China government banned this film in their cinema. No country should banned this film...it's too magnificent to keep people from seeing it. The whole world should see it because it is a milestone in movie making. The best movie ever.

yes this movie has become extremely popular i heard in just a few more days maybe even now it will have surpassed titanic as the highest grossing film of all time it is amazing how popular this movie has become in such a short amount of time. Now I have yet to see this and I'm debating whether or not i will but it wouldn't surprise me if china did in fact try to ban the movie i mean so many countries already have restrictions on the internet so a move to ban viewing of a movie is certainly not beyond their reach.

Actually the subjects about Avatar is very popular here. You can easily find information about it here. Some people even try to have such a makeup after watching this movie. And this movie is still available and popular in the cinema. Obviously this is not called "ban".

I think it is just a propaganda to make this movie more popular to make people excited and want to see whats in this movie that has created the spread of this rumor that it is banned in China. Good that you clear the air and people will not listen too much on rumors. They are nothing but only bull..sh$t.What a laugh!

youless,
I think there is a little misunderstanding about the Chinese's decision on this movie's screening in Mainland China.
Basically, the movie Avatar has 2 versions namely 2D and 3D Imax, due to the limited resources required for the screening, the authorities felt that it would be better for this movie to be screened in 3D Imax whilst they take away the 2D screening.
It is just a fair, practical and economic decision, as it will just be hogging of resources to show this movie in both versions. There is nothing political or protectionism about the call here as portrayed by some media.
As quoted by UME International Cineplex assistant manager Liu Hui where he said in a statement, "In UME, the 3D and Imax version make up 90 per cent of our box-office income, so it won't affect the majority of viewers."
So, the 3D and Imax versions will continue into February, but on Saturday, 2D screenings will come to an end to gear up for the Chinese New Year, in which many of their own country’s films will come out in theaters, including a biopic of Confucius, starring Chow Yun-Fat.
On the hindsight, I just can't wait for the debut of the show Confucius as I have been hearing a lot of rave reviews on the Chinese internet.

You are right. Actually the ticket price for 2D and 3D version of Avatar is about RMB30. So more people are willing to spend more to enjoy the best result. Unfortunately this kind of acting was regarded as banning. This is a big rumor.

Youless,
Perhaps your country should have second thoughts about having these foreigners in your country to teach the English language when they do not even know how to use a simple word like "BAN"!
Jokes aside, I think the report has some hidden implications and agenda. I think it only goes to show how irresponsibility can rile up unnecessary emotions and further misunderstanding. It is like our Chinese saying: "Adding fuel to a lighted fire!"
I felt that the original author is really a disillusioned individual and has really played up some sentiments of certain quarters. Frankly, there were also another review of the film being racial and I just do not have the other side making some big issue out of it.
In the words of your previous President, Jiang Zemin: “We must concentrate our energy on handling our own affairs well, ... We must ceaselessly boost our economic strength, the prowess of our defense [forces], and the people's cohesiveness.”
Have a nice day.
