Well I did....at an apartment complex I use to live at. One day when I was at home and later on towards the evening, I heard the smoke detector go off in the next apartment to me. The man who lived there was named Gus, a very big guy and super nice, and I just thought he burnt something in the oven, so no biggie. Then after a while, it stopped, so I didn't think too much of it. If anyone here has a smoke alarm close to the kitchen, you probably know how easily they are set off if you burn something in the over or on top of the stove. Sure enough, about 15-20 minutes later, it goes off for a minute, then stops again. I went out in the hall but didn't smell a thing but thought, hmmmmmm, now that's kind of strange. I go back to watching tv and everything is quiet for about a 1/2 hour, and then it starts and doesn't shut up. Now I'm for sure thinking this isn't right, so I go and knock on his door but still don't smell anything like smoke. Nothing. I start thinking to myself about how I haven't seen him in 2-3 days, but sometimes he would visit his sister. I thought maybe his smoke detector needed a new battery (even though the complex just changed them a couple months prior), or it was defective or breaking. I call maintenance emergency and explain what was happening. I use to work there so I knew everyone, and the assistant manager (Bill) happened to be on duty so he came over. We knocked pretty hard a couple of times, calling Gus's name, and no one answered. Finally, Bill took his master key and opened up the door. There was poor Gus, sitting straight up in a chair in the dining room with just his shorts on. I won't even describe to you what he looked like as it was pretty gross. As soon as we opened up the door, the smell hit us. Mind you, it was 90 degree's over the last few days, and his windows were closed but the air conditioning was on, so the smell didn't seep out until we opened the door. It was horrible. The police came and sealed off the place (to make sure he wasn't murdered), and they had to wear masks through the whole investigation until the coroner came. I lived on the bottom floor so I had a patio door along with my entrance door, and ended up calling my daughter at work, telling her what happened, and NOT to come in through the back door, but come in through the patio door. I had already put towels on the floor by my entrance door to stop the odor from coming in from the hallway and certainly didn't want to open it back up. It was a sad affair and I felt really bad for him, said my goodby's and wished him well. And funny enough, I even told him I was so sorry I saw him in his underwear and apologized. I found out later that he had been dead for at least 2-3 days. The complex had special people come to clean up the smell, and after a day or two, you never new this happened. The apartment was cleaned out (I'm assuming his sister came) and it was completely re-done and cleaned out. No one knew why the smoke detector was going off as it was not defective and the battery was fine....they couldn't figure it out. I had the feeling Gus was trying to tell me to find him, and I did. Don't believe that? Well, after a couple months went by guess what, that same smoke detector went off one day for a few seconds (no one was home), and then it stopped. I said "Hi Gus, how are you doing and did you come back to visit?"..............it never went off again and I lived there for 2 more years. Did you ever find a dead body? Tell us your story if you have one. Did you know the person or not?
