No offence to anyone who works in a bank ,I know you actually do some work .Its just that I was just in a bank and everyone seemed to be walking around ,
non chalant and doing nothing (at least as far as I could see) while the lines were long and nothing seemed to be moving.
I dont know and if I am correct me but I get the impression that people who work in a bank are totally oblivious to the fact that many times you are trying to get some work done during your lunch time and get back to work .However at the pace they work ,you are likely to get fired
Anyone else has had that experience of trying to get in and out of the bank in the least possible time and end up spending far longer than you bargained for ? Or is this a problem with our local banks ?

You just have to notice things. For instance, they might be counting out the receipts for the day, checking the cash drawers to see if there is enough, doing something for the boss, etc. Also it depends on how many cages are supposed to be open. If the bank says that between 10 and 12, four cages have to be open and only four tellers allowed to work, then even if there are eight cages open, that means those four are on reserve and usually for the busy time of the day.
Also some of those employees are not tellers or tellers in training and some do other things for the bank.
But as for some of the cages being empty, it is the same with stores that have long line ups and only four cashier spots open. Maybe the less spots open, the more the banks save.

I often think that they could at least open all the teller cages, but I guess they do not. I have been in a hurry behind someone who has the whole company payroll and that is why I use an atm. What is also worse is when there are only two or three cages open on Old Age pension day, and many of the pensioners do not trust the atm, and there are also many who want face to face contact and they spend a good half an hour talking to the teller.
By the way, they had a discussion on our radio about lollygagging.

Thanks for the best response. I have observed what happens in a bank as I am often in that long line up behind those lollygaggers who just chat. That is another discussion, if anyone wants to start one.

Hi ronnyb,
I know exactly what you mean, it is the same over here in the banks. I am sure the bank staff are busy and are doing some work but why every time I go to my bank am I standing sometimes up to 45 minutes in line
It is for this reason I try to most of my banking online or use ATM machines and only visit my bank only when absolutely necessary. Maybe if any of our fellow mylotters are bank workers they can shed some light on the situation

I've worked in a bank and for one, I know what you mean. They don't move fast for anybody. Heck, you could draw interest just waiting for the next teller!

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji,
Well, I have never experienced such things as I never go to do all this work as this is responsibility of my hubby. But I wish to narrate an incidence, when after colecting Token from the bank, and waiting for scedule time alloted for taht job, my hubby turned back to his classes (he was taecher), went to bank, after he completed all jobs, it was in the evening after banking hrs were closed, so when he wanted to present is token, bank was shouting,he told tehm in very clear terms taht he had no time to wait, else he would come next day, taht was a lesson to banks and he became friendly. It is customer should withdraw all amount in masses to taech a lesson to Banks. Banks enjoy at customer cost.
May God bless You and have a great time.

It has been my experience that bank personnel seem to take a long time to do their jobs. I don't see them walking around a lot, but there doesn't seem to be enough workers for the amount of people that are there during the peak hours - like our lunch times. I grew up in a banking family. My dad retired after 30 years of working in a bank. He was an officer and not a teller. I know he worked hard at his job. Maybe working with money makes people be extra careful thus slower at their jobs. I just now count on the extra time that I will have to be at a bank when it is necessary that I have to go there.

I work for a banking service which is all done online. We work very hard. Now the physical branches(which my company doesn't have) I have seen some slackers that just don't bother getting things done.

I don`t know about your country ron, but it is the case in my country too. Ever since banks were nationalised in our country and taken over by the government i have found that bank staff have become more rude and uncooperative with the customers. They come late ,spend half an hour gossipping having tea and then finally start their work un mindful of the customers who are made to wait. When banks were private the staff was always courteous and ready to help. Nowadays except for a few good workers the majority just come to waste time. Then again they go on illegal strike and that too during the end of the week or just when the week is about to begin demanding higher wages and allowances. As it is they are well paid and with extremely good perks yet their greed is inexcusable.I think this happens in every country where banks are under the government.

I've never noticed the people in the bank not working. The problem I see is the deposit for businesses. How often have I had to wait for a business deposit to finish? There is one bank, I know of, that has a special lane for them. It works out nicely for those of us in a hurry.

I have worked in banks in Australia for many years and I don’t know about your banks where you live but I did not get a chance to do nothing very often at all, in fact I found bank work to be high pressured and stressful. I hated working in a bank and to this day I am not a fan of financial institutions and their lack of staff, service and high fees and interest rates! It has been many years since I was employed by a bank and I suspect one of the grievances that customers have is lack of personnel which results in poor customer service!

I've never had an experience similar to what you are referring to, but that is because I don't typically go to the bank. I try to use the ATM for everything that I possibly can. That said, my sister-in-law works at the bank and everytime that I am over there it seems like she is doing nothing at all. She is always walking around the store (she works at a bank that is inside a Wal-Mart store) or she is sitting on her tail in the bank branch doing nothing. She even says that it is the easiest job that she has ever had.

Everybody seems has problem with a bank. In my place, some people even already scared with bank fraud. Anyway, I sometimes encountered with fairly equal problem. This is simply because we want everything perfect in bank where we save our money. Unluckily, almost all of bank officer is in high tense until night, especially the back officer ones. So maybe they feel stressed even more just to see something's strange going on. I know that they should fix the problem. But, many bank officers are pushed hard enough at work.

Hi ronnyb,
I really don't know. My daughter works in a bank and I know that she works really hard. The bank that I go to sometimes seems to move slow and especially at lunch time on Thurs. and Fri. and also Sat. mornings. Those seem to be their busiest times. I always seem to get behind someone with a zillion transactions. One of the few perks of working every single weekend is that I have my days off during the week. I find if I go on a Monday or Tuesday morning that I have no problem at all in getting in and out of there. I Know that it seems like they are moving slow but they have to be meticulous and can't rush through any transaction. They have to be 100% accurate in all that they do. If the people in your bank are slower than in most banks then you might want to consider changing banks.

Hi, ronnyb. In the banks in my city where I live at, I don't see this kind of behavior going on. The people in the banks act very professional and precise. They are steadily working to serve their customers. They don't play around or walk around like they have nothing special to do that day. If workers at the bank act like this, then they need to be monitored by their boss/supervisor. And if they don't do their job then they should be fired. I have seen this type of behavior at the DSS office, and at an Head Start school. This should not be tolerated on an job at all. You have customers that do watch employees you know. And I am one of these people. If I was a worker anywhere, I will be careful how I handle myself, especially when I am in public around customers.

Anyone working w/the public has a hard job. Everyone should have to that once in their life. It doesn't look like hard work but there is probably more to it than we see. The only thing that aggravates me at my bank is when i have to wait on another bank employee to get done whatever they are doing. I think the customer's should come first.

I have an aunt and a cousin who works in banks. And they do work, by entertaining their customers. They may be sitting i front of the customers but it's really difficult for them too, especially if the customer has a lot of complaints. And they are still working during lunch time. The service in their banks still continues.
