What Would Your Ideal Job Be? Are You Doing It Now?

I once thought that working in an office would be "it" for me. Typing away all day amongst other like-minded people. I have done that for as long as I can remember..and in different places. Now that I am unemployed though, I do not feel as confident doing that kind of work anymore because of 1. The competition and 2. The way technology is moving my skills may not be enough.
So it got me thinking (as I do). If I had the choice (and money to do it) what would I do? Well, me and hubby once visited an animal sanctuary in Scotland. In this sanctuary were - mostly, farm animals that had been abandoned, mistreated or the farmer was selling up and wanted his animals to have a better life. It is dependant on public donations to keep going.
I like the idea of looking after animals. It would be marvellous to be able to treat, say, a horse that had been starved virtually to death, feed it and see it blossom as the days went by. In the sanctuary in Scotland they even have a model village housing lots of rabbits, so each house has its own rabbit living in it. Very cute! How I would love the money to be able to start my very own Animal Sanctuary here in Cumbria. Obviously, I'd employ lots of staff who know what they are doing and a kindly vet...but the best part would be to check the animals each day and TALK to them without being ridiculed lol.

Wow, I almost feel the same as you do.
I thought once that my ideal job would be a job where I do what I loved doing, which is writing. I had one such job for more than a year and I was the happiest there - I get to write stories for books, or quizzes, or online test items, and so on. I get to stay up late doing it (because our work hours start in the afternoon all the way until midnight), though on the downside, I developed insomnia because of it.
But I didn't get to have the credit for all those writings that I did, and sometimes I get so tired of writing on the same topic or repurposing a story. The reward of a job well done outweighs everything, of course, but I realized that I don't want to write for a living after all. I realized that, in writing, I want to please myself first and foremost because I will always be its first reader and because I don't want to be dictated by those who will read it. I want to write for the sake of writing. I want to write because I want to, not because I have to earn something.
And I realized that what I really want to do is teach. Teach English, specifically. I'm trying to work on it now but I need to get some credits for it first. ^_^
I like your ideal job. I hope you get to do it someday soon, if not for your sake, but for all those animals that would get to feel your love.^^

Thank you very much.
... And your reasons for blogging are just so precious. It reminds me of why I decided to blog in the first place. Perhaps I'd go back to it. ^_^
More power to us!

Thank you so much for your lovely response. I can tell you write very well (not that I'm an expert) and it's the same with me, really. I have a blog showing what I wrote in my diaries years ago and there's only me that's going to appreciate it. I have this fear of losing them all which is why I am blogging them...at my own pace you understand lol.

Hi Janey...what a nice thing you would be doing ... to work with animals.
For me, I think my most ideal job was being a mom...and I still have that, just in a different way now that my children are grown.
I've done office work, owned my own small desktop publishing company, and now, I write, both creatively and informationally, and I love it. Always have loved writing. Along with that, I sketch and paint. At this time, I do feel these are my ideal jobs :)

Hi Karen!I can tell by the way you write that you are very good at it. You can express yourself without rambling on like I do lol.Now that I'm in my 40s it is hard to decide what I want to do. It's not like me to be so indecisive. I'm not convinced that slotting back into the office life is for me as I am so used to being on my own (not that I mind as I've always been independent) and it's nice when John comes home at tea-time. My brain is forever coming up with strange schemes that I know will never happen. Like the Animal Sanctuary is a dream, I know that but I thought of another one today; starting up a shop selling ONLY organic products to bake cakes with..along with all utensils, mixers, bowls (probably even an oven) in there as well. I mean, where's that hairbrained scheme come from? I don't even bake that much anymore! Perhaps I would be an alternative venue for people that are sick of going to the big supermarkets and finding nothing to bake with...hmmm, interesting lol.

I used to think that my ideal job was working in a ski resort. This was a great job when I did it when I was younger and I would love to do it again, but it was not very practical for me to do in Australia when I researched into it. After I had started a family I looked into doing it again but it would have been hard with young kids. Most ski resorts here are a bit of a distance from decent sized towns with schools etc.
If I were to think of a perfect job that I could do here, it would be working in the nearby National Parks so that I could be outside in amongst some amazing scenery.
But now that I think of it, running my own business from home is pretty much the perfect job. I can take time off when I want, do not have to travel in traffic to get to work each day and I get to spend more time with my children than I ever did before while working a job. The best part is that I am actually living this lifestyle now! !

I can tell from all your posts, not just from this one, that you are one happy man! I am so pleased you are doing something you like, from home, so that you can spend time with your family as well. Great job!

Janey, I pray you get some money so you can take care of those animals. They'd be so lucky to have you.
As for me, I used to think that finding a millionaire and marry him would be a great job but Ive changed my mind LOL. If I were to win gazillions, Id buy me a huge hotel. Id love to run a hotel, to call it my own, to walk through the big, plush lobby and know that its all MINE!! Id live there on the top floor and Id have a chef to cook for me and Id have maids doing my cleaning.......and Id sit in my big office and enjoy it. But that might change next week.
Right now Im working from home and really happy to do so. I have my dog by my side and in a few months, I'll have hubby at home also. I cant think of anything else thats missing.

Well my ideal job is being a film reviewer which is very much what I am doing now or at least trying to do. It came about because of medical issues I am unable to work full time and instead of mourning, so to speak, not being able to work full time, I've used the time to start pursuing my ideal job, what I've always had a secret desire to do. Whilst I don't make a living from it, I do hope that one day I will be at that point where it does become a living and work towards that every single day.
The thing is that when you do something which you really want to do it never feels like work, even though you still have to treat it as such. It certainly helps to make a difference to your general attitude to the day and although it is sometimes a risk to go after your ideal job, well you never get anywhere without taking a few risks do you.

That's very true my friend. I'm so glad you are doing something you really like, it makes such a difference doesn't it? I'm at a crossroads, I suppose you would call it. It's been so long since I've worked in an office that I'm not sure if I can do that kind of work anymore, surrounded by baying women gossiping about other people instead of doing some work lol. There are some wonderful people on this site (including yourself) who I find inspiring if I'm being honest. The thing is though, if I wanted a change in direction it generally means forking out cash to do it i.e. courses...and I haven't got any. Years ago I was able to go on an NVQ2 in Admin as I had been unemployed for 6 months. I was on JSA and I also got a £10 Training Allowance on top of that each week I was on the course. There's nothing like that now...certainly no free courses for me. I'm the forgotten generation although it's bad enough for my nephew and he's 20. Life sucks!!

I'm a writer. I've always wanted to become a writer. I hope I get to publish an actual novel someday (and win awards for it, lol), but I haven't even begun writing it. The task is so daunting and demanding that I'm cowed. It's such a big commitment and if things go wrong, I'll be so crushed. No other way but to forge ahead though. One of these days, I'll sit down and get to it. In the meantime, I write articles and short stories...

when i was young, i want to be a teacher but in truth i have no thought about this. my family usually encourage me to become a scientist. when i grow up, i began to consider my life, i found that the ideal job for me is a kind about science or tecnology, rather than the kind about communication. at present, although i have a job about the wapnet, i hold my dream and study somethings about accountant and hope one day i can get the work about accountant.

Hi janey! My ideal job would either be working in an office or working at home doing online jobs. I would love to work in a home-based setting and where i get to be the boss, no pressures and no hassles. I am already a nurse but i have realized that I really can't imagine myself again having duties in the hospital.

Nursing can be so demanding, I should imagine. However, you are obviously very happy working at home and I wish you all the luck in the world, my friend.
