One of the supermarkets here is locally owned. I went there to purchase a few items for supper and they had the radio on, and it was coming through the loud speaker or speaker units. On the program these two guys was talking about a party-line, which is a telephone line that is shared by one or more customers (home).
I was thinking about the time we had a party-line, and another shopper had a smile on her face and I knew she was reminiscing to, when she reached me she said " I remember when we had a party-line", I replied I do too. When we were children we would eaves drop on the other person (customer's) conversation. She replied, and the grown up would eaves drop on our conversations and then tell our parents what we were talking about.
I remember that our ring would be two short rings, and the other person's (home) ring would be 2 long rings. As children we didn't care what ring it was we would pick it up anyway.
Have you ever had a party-line?
Do you even remember when there was party-lines?

I remember them very well. as a teenager growing up in the 80s that was the big thing to do. Now a days I do beleive the chat rooms all online have taken that over.
It was fun while it lasted.

i do,but that wasn't the only option when i was very small.people could either choose party line (cheaper) or pay for private line.they were phasing out party lines on the island at the time and i didn't know too many that still had it.

I do remember. It seemed every time you were on the phone, someone else needed it. I do vaguely remember people listening to others conversations.

Yes, I remember when we had a party line.
We would listen to the other party's calls.
We would pick up to when the phone rang,
whether it was our ring or not. That was
a while ago. Did you think then that you
would be carrying a cell phone, or that
you would have your own personal line?
Have a good day.

Hi Cheeve,
I do remember theose party lines and also the telephone used to be those old black heavy phone, when my friend comes round to stay for the weekend, we would have a field day listening in to other people's conversations, till my mother clip us round the earhole and told us not to be naughty, hmmm, wonder if my mother then listened in? she never told she did, lol.

I lived on a farm in Missouri in the late 70's/early 80's. We had a party line. It was shared with 3 other farm families in the area. I don't remember there being different rings when calls came in. I most remember picking up the phone to make a call and there'd be somebody on the line. lol. I never eavesdropped because that would just have been rude but I remember getting pretty doggone frustrated when I needed to make a call and one of our neighbors was on the line with one of her relatives gossiping about another of their relatives! lol. There was just no way to let them know, other than butting into their conversation, that I really needed to use the phone. It was agony deciding just how long to wait before I could pick up the phone to see if the line was free. Too often and I was rude, not often enough they didn't get the "hint" that somebody else was waiting! lol. I graduated from high school in 1982 and we still had the party line then. I moved away after graduation so don't really know when the system changed. This topic brought a smile to my face too....

Yes I remember the party lines on the phones. I am 56 and as a child I could remember not being able to use the phone due to others using, it was funny, cause you could actually here the other parties conversation. To be able to use the phone we had to constantly pick up and hang up the phone to get them off, that was probably rude, but that's how we use to do it. We never had different rings to know who the phone was for though. My mom worked and we weren't allowed to use the phone incase she had to contact one of us and when the other party was on the line we use to get blamed for being on the phone and it wasn't us. Those day's are sure gone now
