Need assistance in buying a new car?

Hi guys, I have 6 months before I do a road test to get my license and I need a car to practice before then. Of course it would be a used car so I need some advice on what to look out so I know that the car is a good one. Would not like a situation where I drive off and it would stop me on the way. What make of cars are good, durable and easy to sell of in future? Expecting honest responses thanx
