feeling a bit silly but this parts of a song I knew once has been coming into my mind today, and of course I could have googled it,but wondered if anyone else was familiar with this? I think '
its really a pretty old song. I remember something about
And spread the welcome mat for you. I don't know where you came
from, because I don't know where you have been, but it really doesn't matter, pull up a chair and cut the chatter, and dig right in" So am I really going bananas or was this a real song a long time back? Any one remember this?

I think it is MUCH older than Sesame Street - just one that they used.

Hi Hatley. That is a VERY old song, and you remember more of the words than I would have done, but I remembered them all when you quoted them. I rather fancy remembering Doris Day singing them in an old movie. Sounds like her, doesn't it?
At least part of it must have stuck well, because so very many people use that first line "If I'd known you were coming, I'd have baked a cake" and "Spread the welcome mat for you". Good memories.

I don't think you have gone bananas. Because my mom sings that all the time! I don't know the words because she gets as far as If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a cake, and that's all she sings. It's nice to know she isn't nuts. Before her, I hadn't heard anyone else sing that.

hi AmbiePam good because this came to me of all places while I was on the throne and I am going why am I remembering this right now? Still dont know why it just popped into my head. I used to'have a photogenic mind and could envision words on paper when I took tests, so often got straight A's but when I went back to get my degree in my fifties, the ability wasjust barely there.but in my memory I seem to have these odd little things stored up.

If I Knew You Were Coming I'd've Baked A Cake by Eileen Barton, 1950s. Here's the lyrics Hatley....do you remember? I remember just some of it.
Knocking On Door
She speaks here:
Come in
Well, well, well, look who's here
I haven't seen you in many a year
Song starts:
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
baked a cake, baked a cake
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band
Grandest band in the land
Had you dropped me a letter, I'd a-hired a band
And spread the welcome mat for you
Oh, I don't know where you came from
'cause I don't know where you've been
But it really doesn't matter
Grab a chair and fill your platter
And dig, dig, dig right in
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Hired a band, goodness sake
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Music plays in middle:
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
baked a cake, baked a cake
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Had you dropped me a letter
I'd a-hired a band
Grandest band in the land
Had you dropped me a letter
I'd a-hired a band
Spread the welcome mat for you
Oh, I don't know where you came from
'Cause I don't know where you've been
But it really doesn't matter
Grab a chair and fill your platter
And dig, dig, dig right in
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Hired a band, goodness sake
If I knew you were comin' I'd've baked a cake
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Howd-ya do, howd-ya do, howd-ya do
Howd-ya do-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh...........the end, haha!

Hm, Hatley...this is one I do not know, but I like the sounds of it :))
I think most of us do special things when we know company is coming. If someone just drops in though...they're taking their chances lol.
Maybe I can find the song on YouTube.

hi peacefulwmn9 oh yes its sort of nice. I always did a bit of
that too when I had company coming. but yes when they pop in without warning thats another thing.oh lord that reminds me. one time my hubby came home at noon and was feeling amorous so we went into the bedroom, closed the door, and madeout when the door opened at the crucial time. there stood my shocked rather prudish mom, I dont really know who was the most embarrassed me or my poor mom.and my hubby I thought he was going to burst,he was laughing, mind you laughing. mymom went home in a huff and he was laughing.then I started to laugh too. oh so silly.long time ago now.

hi I dont think I have ever seen my wicked husband laugh so hard as that day when my mom was so shocked she went home, I think his laughing sort of teed her off but again if she had at least have knocked on the door it would have been better.

I think at one time or another, we've all been caught out like that, but yes, if it was mom, that could be embarrassing. But then, you were behind closed doors, and hey, mom had you, so she must get that these things go on lol.
Hugs,

Hi, Hatley, that first line entered into our collective language and people say it all the time. I have heard it sung a time or two. It is just a tiny bit before my time. I found a link that said it was sung by Georgia Gibbs in 1950. I found a link with the words and a video of a couple singing it. You are not crazy.http://www.rhapsody.com/sharon-lois-and-bram/elephant-party/if-i-knew-you-were-coming-idve-baked-a-cake/lyrics.html
Another song from that era that has been repopularized is the Banana Boat song. Who knows, this one may come back too.

Yes, it's a real song. I listen to the 1920's radio network, they have songs from 1900 through the 50's and they play this one every so often. It's a fun song! You really should give that channel a listen, they even have old radio plays on the weekends that I really enjoy.

oh yes when i was little my grandma used to sing this and others while she worked in the kitchen. She also used to sing one that went"I want a girl just like the girl that married dear old dad! She was a pearl and the only girl that daddy ever had." I been thinking about that one because me and son get along so well together, im hopeing he finds a gal a lot like me that'd be so cool. I can remember so many songs grandma sang. I miss her. what a lovely woman.

thats very sad, my first 3 children had my mom and my first hubby's mom but neither cared for grandkids it seemed. they were so mean to my kids. then my aunt came by and my kids loved her so much she loved kids and said they could call her granma. every kid should have at least one good grandma. sorry this happened to you.

No it definitely was a song - I remember singing it as a child. I don't remember the band bit though. I can remember 'If I knew you would coming I would bake a cake, bake a cake , bake a cake.If I knew you were coming I would bake a cake, How do you do? How do you do? How do you do?. I too sometimes recall snatches of songs from childhood that I heard on the radio. Something about seven lonely days making one lonely week! Then it went. Oh my darling I'm crying, boo hoo hoo hoo. This is the last time, I"ll cry for you. If you are bananas then so am I

hi cynthiann yes I had forgot the band part and when I heard the writer of the song singing it, I felt like she was hamming it up a bit, thats odd but I had remembered the song without the corny style this singer was singing it in. oh and old songs, I was singing parts of your cheating heart and one of the residents said I never heard of that, well guess he just was not into old western songs. lol lol lol.

Just because I am not familiar with the song that you are referring to doesn't mean that I think you are crazy. I can almost hear how the words that you are saying would sound in song and I think that it would be a delightful song. It kind of reminds me of the music that my American history teacher used to play for us when I was in college. Please let me know if you are able to actually find the song somewhere because I'd love to hear it.

Oh yeah, I know that song. It was sung by a lady named Eileen Barton, and popular in the 50s, I think. I remember hearing it on AM 740, a radio station here in Ontario Canada that specializes in music from the 1930s to the 1980s, mainly for the "over 50 crowd." LOL and would you believe i'm only 28? LOL I've always liked older music.

Hiya Hatley,
Giving that a bit of thought there is a song somewhere out there I think maybe two with those lines in. Or maybe different versions of the same thing. Don´t think you´re going bananas just the memory of it will probably evoke two different versions imagine me when I hear the same English Song in Spanish. Abba was translated into Spanish and they murdered their lovely Songs lol.

hi lovinangelsinstead 21 its odd that what is really lovely in one language just does not translate well in another so the song loses so much. I keep thinking that old silly song about bake a cake was actually written for some old movie but still havent found the clue.

i don't remember that song, but i often heard that line. For my part, I don't usually think what to offer to a visitor who just drop by, or unexpected, I offer what we have at the house.
So, I give importance to what he says. Make her/him comfortable and offer lunch, dinner and whatever snacks we had, depends on the time they arrive.
Usually they also don't expect special treatment as they are unexpected. They came for an important thing or idea or decision, so that's it. Communion is important.

hi ireneomiralles well I think the song was written to be used in some old movie but havent made the connection yet, I dont think its meant to have any revelance to our way of life now,as I know it was written in 1950. so I wouldnt worry about how you greet people who drop in, this was just a sort of fun discussion not meant to be taken too seriously.
