have High School sports passed their prime?

remember the days when your local high school was competing in a sports event and the entire town would nearly shut down and attend the game? when you could show up at a game and count on seeing everyone you knew? it seems like that has changed over the years, even with football, a majority of the student body attends but some students would rather do something else. same with other residents of the city, nobody goes to watch a game for the sole sake of seeing some good, spirited competition. theres just not as much school pride in todays students as there used to be an example: recently a new high school opened up close to where i live, combining some students from the city i am from and the neighboring city. the first football game was against the original school in my city, which was expected to be a powerhouse this year, while our team struggled to fill its roster, it was a good game through the first half but the new school seemed to lose steam and got scored on a few times, after that, half of the students left, while the old schools students continued to cheer from the full visitors bleachers. this just shows that school spirit is almost a thing of the past. what are your thoughts?

I'm glad I don't live where that is the case. Our stands and gyms are always packed no matter what season we are in. The people in town know who all our kids are and call them by name..recently our boys made the playoffs and every small town on their way to their field had signs up congratulating them. I have hosted 9 team dinners throughout this year and am scheduled for 2 more. Our local newspapers do a great job of covering the teams in our district and the football game or basketball game of the previous night is still the biggest discussions in the morning at the coffee shops. Maybe in other places that is true but here school spirit is about all we have left and it is what is helping to keep some of these little towns going.

thats just how it used to be back then. and now that you bring up the newspaper, the local newspapers in town here still have writers that are partial to one school, and it seems like they try to embarass the new school with their articles, i remember the articles back when i lived in a small town, the local sports writer lived down the road and he always had a positive note in there about everyone

Our local paper is great about making sure all our little local schools make the sports pages.

I don't attend school sports. Football is boring and I only go to a game if there is going to be a bonfire or it is a powder puff game. (This is when the girls play and the football players dress like cheerleaders) Our school has a lot of school pride, I guess. I see lots of people attending after school activities and games. For me, it is just a bore though, with the exception of the above. It is going, but it is not at the same time. There are those that still attend and there are those that don't. In the old days there was less to do, less money, and so on. So going to a game was the only thing TO do. Now there is plenty more activities offered to those school aged children so they decide to attend those things.

that is true, back then the towns were smaller and everyone knew each other, i guess i could see where going to games today wouldnt be as fun if you didnt know a majority of the players personally

i think the only time we really had any one watch our sports was when the aussie rules u15 team won the state sheild for the 3 rd time in a row. they've won it a few times since then in the the last 10 yrs. but we never had anyone come and watch us playing sport, i played soccer and my mum would come along with us but that was it. it was a good thing once, we played soft ball away from home and had a male teacher with us. there were a few other parents but they weren't bothered about anything. a friend got stung by a bee in her mouth and mum stayed at the hospital untill she could go home along with the teacher.

The internet my friend. People are more interested in their online lives. Many families have 2 working parents. Just providing for the family these days takes a lot of time and money with less emphasis on community. It is a shame, but a sign of the times.

I do believe that High School sports have run their course. The last one I went to was a football match my brother was competing in. There were about four or five other people in the crowd, giving bored expressions and not even bothering to cheer their kids on. It was very sad indeed

Not in my school its a compulsory. So if you don't attend you be sorry..lols. Our P.E. grade depends on it. If we attend the more chance to have high grade. If you don't attend then theirs a lot of make-up to do just to increase your grade into passing.
