Levels of risk from pickpockets or robbers may differ from place to place. The present risk of pickpockets and other criminal elements in our place has sadly risen from the past years. These happen when you are in crowded places, busy streets and now, even churches and malls. Do you have this similar situation where you are? How do you safeguard yourself from pickpockets/robbers? Do you have any personal precautionary measures to prevent these things to happen to you?

Well, it depends on where I am. There are certain places in our area that pick pockets are noted. In this situation, I always check from time to time my pocket. I also see and watch out who are those people near me and if they look suspicious.

Hi Jpso, That is true. In our place, there are areas which are known to be havens of pickpockets, robbers and other criminal elements. If situations bring us to these places, we should always be cautious of things and people around us. Or staying away from these places is safer. Thanks.

Hi Madteaparty, Was reviewing the discussions that I started and tempted to comment on the "funny" thing. It happened to me, too. We wrote at just about the same time and in exact words! Funny because we didn't have the opportunity to read each other's comments as action was simultaneous.

Best tip, do not carry large sums of cash. Only carry the credit/debit card you will be using that day. Separate you money. Don't have everything in your purse or one pocket. Keep a good grip on your purse at all times. If possible make sure money is in a zipped compartment. Never lay your purse down in public places. Be aware of your surroundings. Relax, think positive. Try to stay out of high crime areas.

Hi Teamrose, I agree with all that you are saying. Sometimes people fall prey to pickpockets or robbers because of their own doing. Some knowingly or unknowingly expose their purse or money in public. You should not lose grip of your purse all the time and not open it just anywhere. Refraining from havens of criminals is a lot safer than visiting these areas.

This is very common in our city. We have to be very careful while moving out in the crowded places. I take special care about my money. I have a hidden pocket in my shirt and pant where I keep my money when I am in a crowded place or in a public transport.

Hi Meapas, Pickpockets and robbers are very observant. They take notice where we place our money and they always have every technique to get it. It is best to counteract these robbers with our own ways of safeguarding ourselves. What you do is a very good idea. Pickpockets always happen in crowded places and in public transportations. We should be wary of our surroundings and people's movements around us all the time.

When I know that I am going to be somewhere that it is not possible to have my purse protected at all times, I don't carry it. I will have my ID and my debit card in my front pocket. Then, if I have any cash with me at all, I will carry that inside my bra. Yes, my bra because that is the one place that I know a pickpocket couldn't get into without me being aware of the situation. When I am getting ready to use some of the said money, I will go to the bathroom to get out what I am going to need.

Hi Dorannmwin, That is surely one wise idea. Putting money inside the bra would be the safest thing to do. I often saw this thing from my old folks. I used to go to the city with my grandmother in the past. I always noticed that upon paying for something, she took the purse from inside her chemise (undershirt). She had the purse pinned to her bra. But unlike you, she just didn't mind if people watched her as she got her purse from her bra. hahahaha

I always leave my stuff in my jacket pockets, which are either secured by zip or button. Luckily, most of my jackets have inner-pockets, so my most valuable things like wallet and iPod go in there and the jacket itself is zipped. I have yet to fall victim to pickpockets, and will continue to remain cautious so it stays that way
• Philippines

Hi MrKennedy, It is always better to have zippers on our jackets or pants. Pickpockets will have a hard time opening it and so does with jackets with buttons. But in our place, these pickpockets no longer need to unzip things. They just slash your bags or pockets using very sharp blades. The next time you notice, you disembark from the jeepney with holes in the bag or your pockets.

i only buy purses that have a long shoulder strap so i can wear my purse over my body (although i have heard of people cutting the straps!) you just have to be really watching and not let your guard down.
• Philippines
29 Jan 10
Hi Cher, Yes that is true. Robbers and pickpockets are updating their "skills" from time to time. With the long straps of your bag, you should always hold on the bag even if this is worn across your body. What I do if I carry shoulder bags is to hold on to my bag all the time and place it in front of me, never hanging it on my side.

I keep my billfold in a zippered compartment in my purse and the strap to my purse diagonally across my body. I never show large denomination bills or a large amount of bills. When going to my car, I have my keys in my hand before I leave the store.
• Philippines
28 Jan 10
Hi Bellis, Having keys readied does not waste time for us to look for them. Some incidents of robberies happen in car parks just as people are about to open their cars. Taking time to look into our bags for the keys allow these robbers to pull their acts. That is why some people here have remote control keys installed in their cars. I also notice some people having special zipped compartments in their belts for their bills. Thanks for sharing.

Since I am a guy, i don't take any handbag. I put my wallet in my front pocket, so I can see any naughty hand that want to pick something from me. Most of guys around me put their thing in back pocket, it's cool, but not save at all. When you are not really focused, it's hard to know that someone picking things from your back pocket. But it doesn't mean the pickpocket can't proceed to take something from your front pocket, may be there's some really expert ones able to do it. So, if I take large amount of money, I just make it thin and slip it in my shoes. Or at least separate them into let's say 4 parts and put in 4 pockets. Preventing from robbers is a bit harder than pickpockets, may be just avoid to go to quiet place, and some risky district. Good luck for mylotters and hope no one would experience such things.

Hi Survajar, You have a good way to safeguard yourself from pickpockets. I do that at times, too when I decide not to bring any handbag. I put my money separately in different pockets or in my shoes, so that in case I become victim (which I am not ever praying) of pickpockets, I still have money to bring me home. A lot of guys here carry handbags, backpacks, or shoulder bags with them.

i often meet this situation.especially in crowed place, the pickpockets often like to stay here and find what they want and take action.so i hate their behaviour.when i go shopping and go to crowed place,i often keep money and valuable thing well and prevent them stolen.at the same time i notice stranger around me and keep distance with them.

Hi Bingchen, Good idea there. It is always good to put money and valuables in a safe place. What I do when I go out, I do not put all my money in one place. I separate them in different pockets, purse or bag's pockets. That way, I still have some money in case I become victim to pickpockets. It is a good thing to stay away from persons you are suspicious of.

Just be yourself even if you bring sufficient amount of money on your bag. Pretend that its your normal or regular day walking alone anywhere so that pickpockets or robbers will have no idea that you are carrying much amount of money inside your bag. Always carry your bag infront of you and be extra careful everywhere you go.
• Philippines

Hi Hazeldesosa, That is a good idea. People should not, in any way, "show" that they have valuables with them while walking. Here, there are places which are known to be havens of pickpockets and robbers. Their attention is easily driven to people who "exhibit" (purposely or unknowingly), things which are the objects of the robbers' eye. These items are usually cellphones, purses, wallets, branded sunglasses, etc.

Well, depends on where I am. In my home country you're always at risk, as there are more pickpockets than normal cityzens. In the country where I live now is quite the opposite, but I got too used to be cautious all the time so I never lose sight of my purse, just in case.
• Philippines

Hi Madteaparty, Lol, I noticed that, too. You were starting with the same sentence in just a few minutes difference. We are getting used to where we live. And we surely know that these things are going on in the area. What you do is one good thing --- being cautious with our surroundings all the time when going out. We should observe people's movements and check if someone is following us or attempting to waylay us.

sometimes I would rather leave my fone at home if I know I would be in a crowded place.I make sure my money is placed on my front pocket. ^_^

Hi Bianca, Good idea. Sometimes cellphones endanger our lives. They attract pickpockets. If I should go to crowded places, what I do is to tuck my cellphone on my waist. It is too tight there that you will really notice if someone touches it. We should always be alert with what is going on in the surroundings.

Hi Rlcauilan, Good idea. It would be better to place them inside the FRONT pockets. If your jeans, pants or skirts are tight, you will easily notice if somebody's hands, and not yours (lol), are there. Some expert pickpockets still manage to pick from tight pockets. Being alert and careful are important.

Good question. I know quite a few people who have been pickpocketed, but I myself have never had the luxury (not) lol. I keep my wallet in my purse, and my purse tight against my shoulder. If I'm concerned about it I might hang on to it in my hand rather than leave it in my purse. So it kind of depends really. But again, it's usually pretty safe in my purse!

Hiya MMT, Most times I will take the least amount of money possible with me anywhere unless it´s really needed that time. My handbag I carry it with the front part facing me and always close to the left side of me too. Most times I don´t think about being robbed but more of losing something valuable so I usually don´t carry Documents with me unless they are really a must. Say today I need to take them with me because the Police could stop us and I need to have those Documents on hand so today it´s necessary. Did you go on your Holiday then I hope you enjoyed it and how did you get on with the heights thing? Great to see you MMT. Hugs. Sue.xxx

Hi moneymaking! we live in the same place and its been my habit already to keep my bag close to my body whenever i go out. I am always alert also in public utility vehicles. Holdups are common in cabs and buses even on jeepneys. I don't also wear jewelries because snatching happens in the streets anywhere in the city. I wish these elements will be gone someday.

It always helps to make sure you don't have a purse that can be easily grabbed. I have a simple one that in small and I just hold it by the handles. So someone would have to knock me to the ground first and rip it from my hands. I also don't keep a lot on me. A few bucks, my id, nothing really worth missing. Unless of course a robber would like pads and tampons, some pencils, and maybe some lip gloss or eye liner? If I really felt that afraid I would go out and buy pepper spray or something and keep it in my bra, or pocket, in case someone tried to rob me.

Hi Wickedlove, You have "installed" good security measures for yourself! Bigger bags really attract these robbers' attention most especially those shoulder and hand bags. And, in our place, these pickpockets have "metamorphosed" into experts and professionals in their own trade. A daughter's classmate cried because she lost a big amount of money and all important IDs inside her wallet when a seatmate succeeded in slashing her bag without the slightest hint while the robber undertook it. She noticed about it after she disembarked from the jeepney. When I was younger, we were often amused seeing old women taking money (wrapped in handkerchief) pinned from inside their undershirt. That precautionary measure practiced by the old women in the past is now worth taking into mind considering the present level of criminality here.
