How many Public Holidays does your country have?

Australia has ten public holidays. Each state can have additional public holidays, and my state, south Australia, has three more. So I get 13 public holidays each year. Very often our public holidays are a friday or monday, so as to get a long weekend. Many of our public holidays are the usual ones, Christmas, Easter, The Queens Birthday, etc. My state in addition has a public holiday for Labour Day, Proclammation Day and get this, Melbourne Cup Day. The latter is a horse race. So how many public holidays does your country have? What are some of them celebrated for?

In the US we have 11 holidays. The states don't usually have their own. At least I don't think so. We celebrate Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving (when the pilgrams settled here), Memorial Day (to honor the vets), Labor Day, 4th of July (when the Declaration of Independence was signed), Veterans Day, Presidents Day (some of their birthdays, they used to be seperate, but now they are all celebrated at one time), Martin Luther King day (his birthday, he was a civil rights leader that was killed) and Columbus Day (he discovered North America). I might have left one out but I don't think so. Is Astrailia still under British Rule? Is it their Queen that you celebrate?

You have provided the best description of your public holidays, which is great. Thanks. Australia is not exactly under British rule. We have our own government, and Britian has no influence on our laws. But we are still part of the Commonwealth, which means the Queen is our Leader. A lot of Aussies do not want this anymore, and want to become a Republic.

I read some of the other responses and I forgot more than New Years. I also forgot Mothers Day, Fathers Day, Grandparents Day, Boss Day, Sweethearts Day,(I think a few of these are just so they can sell more greeting cards), Valentines Day, April Fools Day (that is the day to play tricks on others) Groundhog Day (if the groundhog sees his shadow, you get 6 more weeks of winter), St. Patricks Day (an Irish-American Holiday)and Halloween(children dress in costumes and go door to door to get candy). The banks and post offices don't close for all of these but for most they do.

I lost track of the total days of public holidays in my country but probably my country has the most public holidays in the world. Besides only having 5 working days in a week the calendar has more red markings than white which indicates there are more rest days than working days. We have christmas, Easter, King's Birthday, our State Head of State birthday, Deepavali, chinese new year, Harvest festival, and a long lists of muslim festivals etc..Too many public holidays is not good for the growth of economy of the country but since it has been gazetted it is irrevocable.

I kind of laughed.. no offence. But people in Australia often complain about all our public holidays, as businesses loose trade. I guess it would be hard to change the legislation in your country to reduce public holidays, as too many religions would be offended.

Really?Long rest days than working days.People who live there have much opportunity to do what they want. But i am curious that why it would affect the business on holidays? In some areas, people would like to go travel, shopping or do something else, it could help to stimulus the economy. Anyway, live happily & work happily!

Usually when there are public holidays especially when they coincide with weekends people will take mini vacation in the neighboring countries. Some shops close during public holidays or open half day. Most factories cease operation on public holidays as staff working on public holidays are entitle to double pay.

social activity picks up again quickly, as families and friends gather to ask forgiveness from one another, and to perform certain religious rituals together. Is not required to do because only the Hindu religion. Indonesia consists of various tribes, cultures and religions, so it made holidays in calendar.

All are celebrated but the only ones that I guess would be considered NOT public holidays in the way as nothing closes would be Valentines Day, Groundhog Day(Schools closes but not banks/post offices), April Fools Day, Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Halloween but all of the other holidays are celebrated publicly with closings.

I don't remember Halloween being part of our public holiday nor the 3 kings since technically the church calendar always make "it" on a Sunday.

Here in the UK, we have tons of different Public Holidays for a variety of different reasons. I cannot be bothered to list them all, but the most prominent are Christmas, New Year's, Easter, Bank Holiday, St. Patrick's day (celebrated in Ireland).

HI! Well, I haven't count them till now, but I will check them soon. Now I will tell only about these one that I still have in my mind- the first is January 1st, I think it is a public holiday in many countries. Then it comes March 3th- then is our national holiday and we celebrate our freedom from the 500 year turkish yoke. Then comes May 6th- it is the day of the military, September 22th- the joint of the country, November 1st- day of the leaders of the Bulgarian National. these are the public holidays in my country and maybe there are 1-2 more, which i can't remember now

god..as many as they can get away with. i've actually spaced most of them. most of the holidays in america have lost their point anyway, because if it's not a commercialism excess,it's an excuse to drink.which is totally disrespectful on memorial day.

India being a multicultural land the list of public holidays is quite a long one so as to keep religious and social harmony among the various groups..Each 28 states or 7 territories can have their different state holidays whereas there are only three national holidays on Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Republic day...There are so many holidays that some public bodies have requested to remove few religious holidays where one or the other religion will have a problem so that's obviously not a solution! You can have the list of Public Holidays in India form this link: http://www.indianpublicholidays.com/
