Can you eat alone in a restaurant?

Yes I can! :)
However I sometimes don't understand why some people can't eat alone in a restaurant. Do they fear that people might stare at their every bite? I don't know.
I don't find it awkward at all. But my friend confessed to me one time that she can't eat alone in a restaurant. What could probably be her reason?
^___^
Feel free to share your opinions/ comments. Thanks!

I definitely can. I can even stay at a restaurant for hours without ordering anything. Well, that is if it's not crowded and I'm really not taking valuable space.

I can eat in a restaurant by myself although I don't do it often. And most times if I do it's just at the mall where most people are eating by themselves. I can walk into a place by myself, like a lounge or a bar, and sit by myself also where I know lots of people can't and won't.
I don't find it awkward but some people do. Usually it is the shy ones or the ones with low self esteem that find it awkward. People aren't watching other people eat.

Yeah chrislotz, it's nothing wrong or abnormal to eat alone in a restaurant when we need food to fill our empty stomach as long as it's affordable to pay the bill. Food served in restaurant is more hygienic that that available at the street stalls though they are rather cheaper. If eating alone I prefer to eat in restaurant as the environment there is more comfortable and tranquil as well as the service is well

I used to be really shy and couldn't eat alone in a restaurant. I'm not shy anymore and can go to a restaurant by myself without giving it a second thought. I kind of enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with it.
I like to give myself a treat once in a while and when I do that, I treat myself to dinner and a movie and the peace and quiet of not having to deal with anyone else.
I guess it boils down to self confidence and not worrying about what everyone else thinks. I like me.

Hello! Actually eating in the restaurant is fun. Sometimes you meet people in different aspect, meet new friends sometimes. I'll eat in the restaurant during lunch time because i'll never bring any food from home, so i'll eat outside. One time my friend ask me if it's safe to eat in the restaurant. But for me i'll never mind it in the way that I'm already hungry. Just choose a clean restaurant and make sure that the spoon and pork that they are using is submerge in the hot water.

I can eat alone in a restaurant but I don't like the feeling of that.Sometimes I even don't want to eat alone in the school canteen. If I have to do it,I will eat quickly in a few minutes and leave immediately.I can't enjoy the food by myself may be just because I am afraid of loneliness.

Well maybe you are only afraid of loneliness. You can overcome it by having with you a magazine first until eventually you'll get used to eating alone in a restaurant. God bless and take care :D

Perhaps the reason that your friend can not eat alone in a restaurant because she feels too alone and in the open. Why not ask her why she can't eat alone in a restaurant? I can eat alone in a restaurant easily. I have no problem doing so. If I am alone in a restaurant to what a meal, I enjoy to have a good book with me or the local newspaper. I can not just sit there like a bump on a log, waiting for my meal to arrive. I enjoy reading while eating as then I eat much slower as well. Perhaps your friend should try again and take a good book or magazine with her. This makes eating alone in a restaurant so much more easier.

This is true, book or newspaper. Plus you will likely eat a lot slower in which case you may enjoy your meal a whole lot more too. I think your friend should try taking a book. Just for a test to see if it helps her feel more content and relaxed. Enjoy!

When I was in college there was a little cafe across the street. One of the few times that I sat alone a lady approached me with some sort of Bible thing and told me that I looked like I had the weight of the world on me. For awhile after that I didn't like to sit alone in public, but don't mind it so much now.

Well that could be one of the reasons why people prefer to eat in groups. I also don't like being approached by a stranger. Especially in restaurants.

I wouldn't be shy of eating alone in a restaurant but, probably wouldn't do it simply because for me the whole part of enjoyment of going to one is the atmosphere and sharing it with others!

I would be just like your friend and not eat alone in a restaurant. I just feel weird about it. I like to eat with at least one other person just for the company. I think eating alone is a very lonely thing to do. Its just not a fun thing to do to me.

I certainly can but I don't usually choose to. I used to all the time when I was on the road travelling a lot, but in that case, your options are you either eat alone or don't eat. When I'm not travelling though, I usually don't bother going to a restaurant alone. It's just much more enjoyable when you have a companion to eat with so I save my restaurant outings for when I have someone else to go with. When it's just me, I just eat at home most of the time.

sure I can, why not? if i am hungry.. I don't really care what people would think of me, beside im paying for my food not the people around me..he he
I used to eat alone when I was working in another country, we work night shift, and morning come I'd feel so hungry and its like Im craving for something, so I would invite my co-worker out to eat but they're all tired, so I have no choice but to go and eat all by myself.

yes, I am not. I'm a happy eater anyway, and I love to eat outside like restaurant and fast food. but I think I'll be a little frugal this time,so need to avoid the fast food. I have to save a little more to buy what I want, I really wanted to have a motorcycle of my own, and it will be useful because my son will be in nursery this coming june, so I need to send him school and fetch after his class.

I am very happy eating alone in a restaurant. I don't understand why some people are so against being alone in such a situation. I think it is because they are just not used to being alone in something that is considered to be a social situation. They are uncomfortable probably being alone in any social situation not just an eating one. I don't worry about people looking at me or talking about me and perhaps that is why it is easy for me to eat alone in a restaurant.

I am not sure, I haven't tried eating alone in a restaurant yet. Restaurants always have this 'expensive' connotation for me. I would only end up eating there if my family or perhaps friends are there to share the bill.
Perhaps I am just use to eating in fast food chains when I am alone and hungry. I might try eating alone in a restaurant just to see how different it is from a fast food chain, aside from the price of course (^_^")

I was single until 42 years of age. I often ate in restaurants by myself. I perfer a booth or a window seat so I don't look up and people think I'm staring at them. In the booth, I can think about things I plan on doing or even meditate. Window seat, I can watch traffic or what is going on outdoors. I'm married now and I still eat in a restaurant on my own sometimes. If my husband is busy or doesn't want to do out and I do.

I agree. I don't usually like eating around anybody unless they are a good friend or family member, it makes me uncomfortable. I guess I can understand that some people like to have someone to talk to while eating, I guess I'm not one of them. Great question! Have a nice day ^_^

Hiya cecillecarmela,
Eating in a Restaurant alone can be as fun as being with anyone else. I don´t fear anyone looking at me I would just be enjoying my meal which I would be savouring right to the last mouthful. I don´t often go to a Restaurant but when I do I make sure it´s worth it.
Perhaps your Friend feels self conscious about herself and cannot stand the thought that maybe People are watching her. Actually they would be so engrossed with their own Meal to looking at everyone else.

Hiya cecillecarmela,
The last line I wrote up there should have been they would be so busy with their own meal and enjoying they would not be looking at everyone else or bothered with what anyone else was doing. After all a couple when they go out to eat only pay attention to each other and no one else well usually I suppose there is the odd one out everywhere. Besides if you eat on your own you can choose what you want and not feel obliged to say yes to the other all the time. You can actually eat your own choice of meals whoopee just for a change.

Of course I can, my friend.:-| Because I go to a restaurant for appeasing my hunger, not for introducing myself. It's very ridiculous that a person cannot eat just because someone is staring at him/her. May be they are too sensitive to endure others' glance. But I have the power to ignore such staring. Whether I am eating in a restaurant or at home, it never bothers me. Have a nice day!
