Hi, next month my boyfriend and I are taking a trip to Australia. We're just going for fun, but we're trying to find out if there's anything special we need to know about renting a car while we're there. I know how to rent a car in America... I've done it before. Is it the same in Australia? Do the companies operate the same? I've found a site where I can compare them ( http://www.comparecarrentals.com.au/ ) but I'd like to hear from someone who has actually been there.
Speaking of being there, has anyone been there before on vacation? How did they treat you as Americans? Did they like your accent?
I've wanted to go to Australia ever since I saw the Jackie Chan movie Mr. Nice Guy years ago. It takes place there.
Anything special I should see? We're flying into Melbourne.
Thanks!

One thing to remember is that you will be driving on the other side of the road and that the driver will be on the other side of the car! I am from Australia, but I have never rented a car as I don't drive. I have also never rented a car in the USA so I can't really compare them. You will need to show them your licence and usually a credit card too. You will need to pay for petrol when you are returning the car.
As far as the other part of your question, most people in Australia are quite friendly, and if you need help, you should be ok just going up to someone on the street to ask.
