I draw the line here...

So I have this thing in my foot, plantar faschitis (no, it's not related to fascism). And the nice doctor lady gave me exercises to do for it. Then the nice naturopathic doctor told me that I should go get fitted for special shoes with the proper arch support. First thing that popped into my head, "granny shoes"...
I got home and told R about this and he said, "granny shoes, no..." Then he thought about it and said, "OK but I draw the line at granny underwear!"

I have had that difficulty in the past. I went to a "Good Feet" store and bought orthotics that I can move from shoe to shoe. Paid $250. My foot doctor that I just started seeing says they are a good idea, but he could have gotten me the same ones for about $20. That might be an option instead of granny shoes. I have a friend that has plantar fascitus flare up from time to time, and even some of the over the counter orthotics are good. You will find the shoes or the inserts either one to be very helpful. I cannot wear mine right now with the surgical shoe, but will resume soon. I can really tell that they help my feet, knees, and back as well. Good Luck. I cannot think of any good use for granny panties, personally.

Pay attention to all the advice, this condition can really ruin your life, the pain can get so bad. The person I know who has it gets to wear some pretty fancy tenis shoes and even her good shoes aren't bad. No heels though. And you can skip the underwear, it won't hurt or help your feet. Enjoy

How do you know the underwear won't hurt or help her feet. It might.

Nice one Dawn!I had it some years ago and boy was it painful. Took a course of anti inflammatory tablets and wore a support in one shoe for about a month. A Dr. Scholls thing and it really helped. Didn't need it after a month or so and it has never returned. Don't go to any expense with support shoes at this point. Not necessary as it may just go away like mine did. I hope that it heals soon.

I've had it many times, and as cynthiann says, it goes away on its own. It's just an inflamation of the plantar faschia.

Granny shoes could just be the newest fashion trend, especially if you wear them with an attitude like they are the latest, hottest style straight off the Paris runways (or whatever runway is the current fashion trend). Granny panties, on the other hand, are never fashionable, even for actual Grannies.

No, it's just inserts. Granny shoes is just what popped into my head!

Hahaha. That is too funny.
Don't despair, dawnald, there might be hope. Look into Dansko shoes, they have some really cute styles. Higher priced though they may be, I swear they are worth every penny!

Ohhhhh. Yeah, sounding a bit like granny shoes there, dawn. I guess you could look into having all the hems of your pants let out and cover those babies up.

Hi dawnald. My husband and I have this too and it's no fun at all. Very painful indeed! I told my doctor about my mornings when I first wake up, it's like ow! ow! gotta pee! gotta pee! ow! ow! and he liked to laugh his butt off at me! lol He gave me celebrex which helped a great deal however, my husband had the exercises to do from his doctor when he was in the military and I did them and it helped a huge deal!! Much better than celebrex ever could! The one that hurt the most but also helped the most was the golf ball. Rolling the golf ball under the arch on the floor for a few minutes worked wonders for me. It hurts like hell but it did the most help. Here's wishing you the best of luck in managing it!

I have also heard of freezing a water bottle and rolling it under the arch.

Soup can? That's a new one. Not sure how good it works but hey, if you're seeing some improvement then by all means, continue! lol But I do know the golf ball works. I'm guessing the more painful the treatment is, the more it works. Now why is that?

Hey dawn~ I think that was a great line from R! Is that like
Planter Warts? I thought they just dig them out and thats it!
And I don't know what they mean about "special shoes" but I do
know that I wore "special shoes" when I was a kid and I still
ended up with one friggen flat foot so all that suffering and
ugly shoes were for nothing! So if I were you I would check
into this very carefully!lol And as for the granny panties,
forget it! They really are so unappealing aren't they!

This is an inflammation in my heel, nothing to do with a wart.

My good friend, who is a General Practitioner, recommended I sleep with a splint. He says the pain in the early part of the day is due to the foot curling up in sleep, then beginning to heal. When we put weight on it in the morning, we reinjure the same spot. He said a splint that holds the foot in its normal waking position will help tremendously and may even heal the problem over time. You only wear it when you sleep. He also recommended good shoes. Don't know your style but Doc Martin's were originally orthopedic shoes and are considered fashionable in some circles, good luck!

A splint, hm? How about sleeping in your shoes?

He mentioned that he generally suggests that to avoid the cost of the splint to most of his patients, but that didn't seem very "medical". He says it works just as well, if your spouse can stand it. Mine is only in one foot, so propping it up with a shoe on is no biggie, but I don't sleep well that way.

Dawn, are they necessarily granny shoes? Many support shoes are fashionable and most good shoes will hold orthotics. Orthotics can be moved between shoes, so only one orthotic (or a pair if necessary) is needed. Have you tried Homy Ped shoes? They have a built-in arch support and are very comfortable - and fashionable!

Oh I know they're not necessarily granny shoes, that's just the first thing that popped into my silly head. I really like the idea of inserts rather than an entire pair of shoes. No, I haven't heard of Homy Ped shoes. Don't know if they're available here or not.

Hurts like heck doesn't it? I have it too.....make sure to wear very comfortable cushioned shoes all the time....no more bare feet! Everytime I get a new pair of shoes though it's better....I don't wear orthotics yet! Nor do I wear granny underwear...keep your fingers crossed.

It's better with shoes. But I don't know if my regular shoes will be good enough ultimately.

Hi dawnald,
My hubby was told the same but they told him that he cam buy this special arch thing to fit in his shoes, so he got one, it works wonders for him, "granny underwear"] trust him to say that.

It's an insole, but I was told I should get one that I actually had fitted to my feet.

Been there. But... the condition is definitely curable, unfortunately it will take time.
My foot doctor supplied me with 2 sets of orthodics; one for my high healed shoes, and for the running shoes.
I'm from Montreal, Quebec and no self-respecting Montrealer would be caught in daylight with Granny shoes - even at 90. The inserts solved the fashion problem beautifully. They are expensive at about $300 for each set, so ideally see if you can get them covered under your medical plan.
It took about a year for the pain to completely stop. But today, 10 years later I'm running, hiking, skiing and skating with no issues.

I actually don't even wear heels any more except for special occasions, back problems. But the inserts really do sound like the way to go.

I think someone already mentioned it, but you can get some type of supportive insoles that are removeable (you stick them in your shoes) so you don't have to get granny shoes! Many skaters I know have "stuff" in their skates to help their arches and no one even knows it!
Granny underwear - ha! I'd rather wear grannies than those G strings - or wait - does that G stand for granny too? Hee hee.
