Do I take it from you mention of "Dear John" that you are fan of Nicholas Sparks novels, if so you might be interested to know that "The Last Song" will hit the cinema before "Dear John".
Anyway in my experience it's always better to watch the movie first because usually in their adaptation to the big screen elements from the book are left out or changed. By watching it first you get an initial opinion which can usually be enhanced by reading the book after. When you read the book first usually the movie is a disappointment because of it being an unfaithful adaptation.

Read the book first. You may even decide you don't like the book and then not want to watch the movie. Not saying it'll happen, I haven't read Dear John either and I don't really plan to see the movie. But just because the book is better doesn't mean you won't enjoy the movie. Just keep your expectations realistic. It's not always going to look how you envisioned it and some things will probably be cut. Read the book first and get to know the story. Then see the movie.

its always better to read book first and then watch movie bcoz always in books its given in detail and by reading it first thing u come to know that u like the story or not and then u will just visualize the situation which put ur xcitement to a new level and even makes u eager to watch the movie. So according to me book is first
