Hey writers! I'm revising the first chapter of my novel and I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions for how to start with a bang. What kind of first paragraphs really pull you in when you're reading a novel? What kind do you like to write, and do you think your technique is effective?

Starting with a big bang or with a paragraph that immediately grips your readers' attention is one huge problem that most writers have to deal with Otherwise, if you start flat, the prospective reader will just junk your novel. I usually open the first page of the book I am going to buy and decide whether to make a purchase or not on the basis of how the writer uses language and starts the story. If I don't like the first page, I'm not buying.

That's quite true.. I read the first few lines of a book before buying or borrowing them from the library.

First of all, I'd like to say congratulations for this novel of yours that you have ready. I think as a reader, I'm drawn to dialog type of first paragraph. Something gripping, in the middle of a scene and something which makes me crave and want to read more just to find out what it's all about. If I dare to say, something like a punchline. If an author can grip readers using a punchline, the readers will be hooked. At least for the first chapter, as you have mentioned. Good luck with that, I'm sure you can do it and have done it already.

Well, what many have learned over the years as I have read and heard from experienced authors, is that your first paragraph sometimes can make or break the amount you can earn from that Book for sure. Personally maybe your Best best would be to have someone you know and Trust read it over, and offer you some tips and at the same time think back to some of your favorite authors and what has kept you from wanting to continue to read their books each time as well. Wishing you the Best.

there's an old saying:a good beginning is half done. how to set a gripping first paragraph is every writer's dream. i don't know what kind of novel you write,so i don't know what to advise you. but i think you can find some popular novels and see how the writers beging their stories. i think it could be a way that can work it out.
