To me the purpose of religion is to elevate us to new levels of consciousness about ourselves and the world around us. As I look back at all the so called prophets of old, those who are most noted didn't come from within any order but they came from outside of established methods of religions and tried to reform them to a more spiritual purpose. I recently heard a guy talking about how every now and than there are people who are born that remind the world that there is more than the material things that are around us and that we need to break free of being so caught up in the material, he also pointed out that those are the same people we usually kill while the demons run a muck destroying our world. While I agree that religion has been used as a tool time and again there has been those who have risen up for reform to try and change the world and liberate us. I honestly don't see science as ever being our great deliverer and setting us free. In fact it seems the more technology we have the less freedom we have. Look at current world affairs, 30-40 years ago public protest was a very common thing today we all sit behind a computer protesting and nothing gets changed. For those of you who think I am wrong what are the most popular shows on TV is it science and history shows or reality TV? What are your thoughts?

I used to think Science and Religion should compliment each other, wouldn't it be Great if there were no confrontations between the two. If God endorsed Science and Science proved the existence of God. But such is not the case. The Bible has been updated at least 270 times by Men, and its time now for God to update science. But alas men have been digging for centuries trying to prove the life of Jesus in the Holy Land. Thousands of sites have been painfully excavated, but to no avail. Not a single broken pot-shard has been unearthed to depict the life of Jesus in Palestine.

Thank you for your reply. With both religion and science each has been interpreted by man. There are plenty of theories in today's science that have no factual backing or that contradicts the very evidence of facts but still the theories are not updated and are being taught.
As far as evidence, why is it that people have such a hard time swallowing 30-200 years in writing time line but easy swallow anything written today that's contrary to mainstream Christianity?
Lets say we even take something outside of mainstream religion like the writings of Nag Hummadi. While most would label these text as gnostic I don't have a problem seeing that they compliment each other. It could be because I don't believe that God and Jesus were one person but that Jesus was a person.
Why would there be shards of pots depicting Jesus? By that time things were mostly scribed, we aren't talking about someone of wealth or royalty. What of the dig site at Megiddo?
As far as God see "Michio Kaku on God", For both definitions of God he inadvertently or directly used scriptures. I see God as the God of Spinoza and the personal God of men. God is described as the infinite order and of nature in scriptures and a person God or "thought and extension" if you will. Ok I am rambling on I will cut it off here.

Archeologists have found evidence of cities previously thought to have only existed in the Bible.. also names of kings quoted in the bible, inscribed on walls and such, previously thought no to have existed.. The life of Jesus is very well documented. Few folks argue that he never existed, but argue that they don't believe he healed folks and rose from the grave as written in the said to be witness accounts of the new testament gospels..

Well, first, very interesting your discussion, I enjoyed reading the different comments. And second this what I think:
In my opinion, any religion could be defined as the useless, most of the time, effort of human beings to reach God, isn't it true? People who believe in religion think that they are reaching God by only attending to the church and to the different celebrations each religion has; However, most of the time, that is a useless effort since they are not really experience God's love in their lives nor practicing what they preach.
Science, in the other hand, does not have any spiritual purpose; it's only purpose is to prove ourselves as beings capable of learning and understanding new things. It's a way to satisfied our curiosity about things we do not know, and a mean to find solutions to the problems or necessities we have.

I kinda like the prophets of old who came in out from the wilderness and said hey 'fools' if you don't get a bit wiser and straighten up.. well you're headed for calamity, so wise up.. and yes, we tend to think those guys are crazy! Imagine if we had one today? You can write or produce the worst slasher films and be deemed sane in today's world, but try to tell people the world's going the wrong way?

Thanks for the reply. Yes its funny how people can make demented films and we praise them but someone tries to make the world a better place and he is ridiculed for it.
