Are Classics Classics For a Reason

Lately I have been digging in to some classic literature. I have always loved them, but had kind of gotten into the habit of only reading what didn't challenge me, just for entertainment kind of stuff.
Here's what I'm rediscovering, many of these authors writing from a century ago or more are discussing todays issues in their work in much the same way that we discuss it now. For instance Walden by Thoreau is a scathing exposition of the greed and materialism of his day. Wow, if he thought things were crazy then, what would he say now? Anyway, what do you think? Are they classics because their wit and wisdom were timeless or just because English teachers enjoy torturing students?

Hello, markrmorris2. I think classics were made classics because those pieces were the first to have such high quality. Its artistry was set as a standard. So years after years in any literature class, teachers always use almost the same literary pieces as models of wisdom and writing styles.
