No Shampoo

How many of you have heard of or tried the No 'Poo or no shampoo method of hair care? Many store brands of shampoo contain ingredients that are bad for your hair, your health, or the environment, so for various reasons many people do not use shampoo on their hair. I have to admit those things concern me, but not enough to go completely without shampoo! When I try to go without it my hair gets disgustingly greasy in a few days. I'm currently trying to use shampoo bars as they don't have the harsh ingredients that most commercial shampoos do. Unfortunately I'm not having good results as it's not rinsing completely out of my hair even though I rinse with apple cider vinegar as recommended. Would anyone here consider going without shampoo? If you have, how long were you able to go before you had to use it? Is there anyone who does not use it at all?

I have a kinky curly hair, and I have heard from tv talk shows that if you have this type of hair, you have to use conditioner rather than shampoo so that your hair will not become dry. So as a result, it has already been 6 years that stopped using shampoo and just have conditioner every time I take a bath.

I have heard of doing that, too, but my hair tends to get oily so that has kept me from trying it. It must be working well for you if you have been doing that for 6 years.

I'm sure there are some people who go without shampoo to save money but I think most of them do it because they feel it is healthier. It is hard to go without it, though, if you are used to your hair feeling and smelling a certain way.

I can't possibly go without shampooing my hair for too long, cause it's past shoulder length and gets a grimy greasy build up quickly. My daughter, on the other hand, can't ever shampoo her hair without getting tangles. She still shampoos her hair but not often. Mostly just washes under water. She has extremely dry hair that mats and tangles and snarls with any regular shampoo. Her hair is curly and I still haven't found the right kind of curl shampoo that will keep it from matting or tangling after a shower. I have tried some conditioners, but most don't work as they should. I will just have to buy something much more expensive designed for damaged hair, which is sort of what she has, very dry and brittle and easily breaks/frizzes.

Some people say that shampoos really contain a lot of harmful ingredients, but I still can't go without it. I have long, wavy hair and if I don't use shampoo, I will end up having frizzy and tangled crown. Besides, I'm often exposed to sun and dirt so I really have to wash my hair thoroughly to avoid that nasty, itchy feeling. Then a friend of mine suggested using organic products instead. She has psoriasis - a skin disorder- so she's very careful with what products she'll use, even the food that she'll eat. She was also introduced to the locally=made products like shampoo, conditioner, hair mask, facial wash, body wash, moisturizer, lotion and even lip balm which consist of organic ingredients. I'm currently using mango butter and lemongrass shampoo and conditioner and I don't worry about harmful chemicals which can harm my hair, health and the environment.

Thank you for responding. I would love to go the no shampoo route but I think you would have to use something in your hair in order to get it clean. I have started changing over to natural products but so far I haven't had very good results. I hope it's just a case of my hair needing to adjust to the difference in products and that it starts responding better, soon!
