PJs on - off to the stores

A major UK supermarket has got fed up with customers going shopping in their nightwear and slippers and has banned them from its stores until they are "properly" attired in day clothes. I am on the supermarket's side on this. As a society we in the west seems to have let go of so many standards. Slopping about the house in night wear is one thing - but taking it outside seems as if we no longer care. If we don't care about ourselves how can we care about anything else. I'm old fashioned I expect. When I was young I used to get dressed up to go shopping! When was the last time that we did that I wonder?

I have some lounge sets that i wear in the day time at home. I do not sleep in them so to me they are day clothes. If someone comes over and wants to go somewhere i wear them outside too. To me they ae now sleepwear. The PJ's and nitegowns i would never wear outside anywhere. So according to the UK store would my lounge sets be considered sleepwear???

I've looked up lounge set now. Men certainly don't wear that kind of thing here routinely and definitely not outside the confines of their own homes. We do wear pyjamas though - well some do. Men here do wear some awful things though. Vests and shorts with shaved heads, earrings and lots of bling (gold chains etc). To answer your original question, yes I think that your lounge sets would generally be regarded as sleep wear or house wear.

I don't think so. But then again I don't really know what a lounge set is. If it is terry towelling and lurid then it ought to be regarded as bad taste if worn outside! LOL.

Wearing them around the house is o.k. but I am like you wearing them out to stores, I do not like to do. I see some people doing this here in the USA. I'm like you I guess they have just let there selves go. Happy posting.

That's kind of my view too. I think that if we don't set ourselves some decent standards then we can't expect society more widely to have any either.

"No shirt, no shoes, no service" is a common sign in some establishments. Will there now be one that says "No nightclothes"? When we were young, we used to get dressed up for a lot of things that we don't now. Now, some of us don't even dress up for special occasions like weddings or Christmas parties.

Dressed up to go to the store? Never. I suspect you were a wee bit more formal over there than we ever were. But pajamas? Nope, can't see myself doing that. Or a bathing suit either...

Whatever next? That's what comes to my mind. I did once take the bin out at dawn still in my dressing gown. But I was rather wary of doing that and certainly wouldn't go any further. I'm amazed that anyone goes shopping like that. Those who shop at night ought to be just grateful that the store is open for their convenience. We always used to have to shop in daylight hours.

I think that taking the bin out is different. Wandering about shopping in nightwear strikes me as slovenly. I can remember when the shops didn't open on sundays either!

I have never gone to the store in my nightdress, but there have been a few occassions where I tromped around my own property in them, but only breifly. But it was an emergency twice and a wonderful surprize the last time. The last time was when the colt was born.

Is this a new thing in the UK then Pikey? I must say I never ran across people shopping in their nightware. How bizarre. Even if we are absolutely dashing in the mornings and I need to drop my son at school, without needing to get out of the car, I throw jeans and a top on. If I drove down in PJ's guaranteed it would be the day the car broke down enroute. I remember doing a discussion months ago about objecting to people shopping in our local supermarket in their bikinis and swimming trunks, no one wants to mingle with all that sweaty overweight flesh over the vegetables.

I don't really think that it is a new thing and in truth I don't think that I have ever seen anyone doing it where I shop. But many people have little sense of decorum these days.

I've got a split opinion on this one as I personally wouldn't go shopping in my pyjama's, but it wouldn't offend me to see someone else doing it. Maybe it would bother me if they were wearing particularly revealing nightwear, but someone in pyjama's and a dressing gown would make me laugh. I suppose it does seem lazy though and it must be happening a lot if the store has seen fit to ban it so maybe something does need to be done.

I used to live close to a mental hospital and we often saw the patients wandering around the village in their nightwear. But they were unwell - I think that we ought to maintain a modicum of time and place that's all.

I have an idea! Instead of making a rule to stop people from wearing their PJ's to the store, embarrass them out of doing it. If someone spots someone in the store wearing their robe or PJ's, announce on the loudspeaker that someone must have wandered off from the Mental Institution and that the men in white coats will be called to escort them back to where they belong. Wouldn't that be funny? I think if they actually were 'handled' by the men in white coats not believing anything they said, and putting them in a straight jacket once, in the padded wagon, they may think twice before being so slovenly again. And word would spread, too.

I could never either, but I asked my daughter once (21 yrs old), why she was wearing her PJ bottoms out, and she said that they were not PJ's. They are just the new style. I thought they looked like PJ's, but what do I know about what the kids are wearing these days.

To me grocery shopping is a chore I don't care for, you take them off the shelves put in cart, take out of cart put on counter, take off counter and put back in cart, take out of cart, put in auto, take out of auto and take in house, then you are expected to put them away and cook them. All in the same day. So if I could do this in clothes that was comfortable, it would at least make it a bit nicer to do. Yes I see some in the grocery store with their pj's on, seems that night clothes have become so colorful, that they are excepted to go out in now. I have run to the store in my pj's a couple times, but not often, I don't know if I consider it as not caring any more about myself or just wanting to be comfortable. I see nothing wrong with it as long as they are presentable. I used to get dressed up to do anything, but at the age of 62 don't care anymore, don't know them people out there and could care less if they don't like what I look like, I am presentable, just not dressed to the max with all my make up on now. I guess it is just how each one feels about this.

Well maybe I worded that wrong, when I go out I do not care if you like what I have on or not, I do not know you and I am out buying groceries ,if you look down on the way I am dressed, usually jeans and a sweatshirt then that would be your problem, I don't stand in stores and look at what others are wearing, never did bother me and not going to start now with worrying about it. I have a lot of running to do on the first of the month as my husband and I are both on disability and I go dressed to where I am comfortable. Fashion has never been a big deal with me, dressing up to make an impression on someone, same as high priced clothes, i wear niceclothes, I shop Macys, Dillards, Kohl's but I guess it came from years of working at the factory and wearing jeans and boots and we are not going out to formal places people. As to what someone else wears to the store, is to me their business and if a store decides that they are too good for some of the customers then I guess those customers, (or at least I would) consider shopping else where. I think too many people into too many people's business now a days. I'm going into your store to spend my money and it is good any where so if my dress was not what you thought it should be as long as my arsss wasn't sticking out then it your loss of my money, but I be dang if anyone is going to tell me what I can wear when I go out to pay bills or buy groceries as I see it as none of your business, you should be happy to just have my business. If not there are plenty more that will take it no matter how I am dress. I am sorry to sound so harsh but getting real tired of people that seem to think their way is best and try to push it off on me. If they want to go to the store in their pj's let them, if you want to go dressed like you going to the ball then do it. Why can't people let others alone and mind their own business, gets me to thinking maybe the pj's covered up the arsss and that is what they mad about nothing to see anymore.

I don't think that my way is best for you. As you say, we don't know each other. If we did you'd know that I live and let live. However, you dress how you want and what has your being on benefits got to do with it? You seem mighty defensive. If we don't care for ourselves then is it any wonder that we live in the societies that we do? That's the point I'm trying to make. It isn't my intention to upset you, sorry if I did.

I get dressed up to go shopping but have seen a lot of pj's and big fuzzy slippers lately. I guess people are trying to let the rest of us know that they are either lazy or don't really care of what everyone else thinks of them. I don't really care what people think so much. I don't like people knowing that I have tweety bird footsie pj's....and it's kind of hard for me to get the footsie part in my slippers or shoes!

I tried to respond to this 6x at around 11:30am my time, and the first time it sent me to the mylot home page, twice it said 'cannot post content, please use standard letters and numbers and punctuation' or some such thing, in red at the top of the page. The other 4x, it just kept returning to the posting box, empty, without posting my comment. I thought maybe it had posted several times, checked the discussion by opening another browser window and still nothing, so I went off and did some more work outside. I am back now, and now that I read Hatley's comment, maybe I can post my original comment now. I copied and pasted it into Notepad, as I usually do, just in case. I wonder if GoAskAlice ( www.mylot.com/GoAskAlice ) would be interested in knowing about this, as she said that she wanted to know when it was happening to attempt to figure out what causes it. Anyway, here is my original comment on the subject: I don't really see the problem. The are clothed, so now the stores think they can institute a 'dress code' to be allowed to shop in their stores? WTH? I know there have been instances where I have asked my daughter why she was wearing her PJ bottoms as pants and she said that was a new style. I think this is just a precursor to more control over us. Standards and fashion has changed. We must change with the times. I say as long as they are wearing clothing of some kind and it is not filthy, disease ridden or urine soaked, they should gain admittance to any store. It is illegal to refuse to serve someone without a valid reason. And the 'type' of clothing they desire to wear, is their choice and only reflects on them.

Yeah, so I don't see the difference if sometimes we think people are wearing PJ bottoms when they are not. Who cares what they wear, so long as they are clothed and relatively clean. I know I am not aware of all of the strange styles that some people find fascinating. And I don't want to judge either, just because someone wants or needs to be comfortable.

Yeah, I don't see the problem, either. I mean, most pajamas cover a lot more than some people wear that are "dressed up", and I can't see the stores banning short skirts or low cut shirts not to mention shorts, tank tops, spaghetti straps, and the list goes on and on. I can understand them saying "no shirt, no shoes - no service", but to dictate the kinds of clothing that people can wear is pushing it a little too far, in my opinion.

I think that I know the kind of pants you are talking about, and both my daughter and I have them. I call them my "lounging pants", but they really are not pajama bottoms. They are extremely comfortable, though, and I have been known to wear them to the store, especially after my C-section when I could only wear loose fitting clothes that did not have restricting fabric (like jeans) or a tight waistband (like sweatpants). My daughter also wears them out to the store. I have never seen anybody look at either of us funny when we were wearing them, but I have also seen other people wearing the same style pants, so they probably realize that they are not pajama pants.

I've NEVER gone to the store in my night clothes, I've only seen a FEW that I wondered what they were wearing. I'd think that with the world's economy, the store would take the money as it comes in. I've never really thought of this one way or the other, but I'm a live & let live type person. It will be interesting to see what happens with their new rule!!!

I too am on the side of the supermarket....I dont tend to think of myself "old" our "out of date" or even "old fashioned"...as I am a 38 yr old female with 2 kids and a busy schedule and yet I have never left the house in my fleece pjs to run to the store...I have been in sweats before but even that is a rare occasion to leave the house in those...I think it is more of a self pride in how you present yourself in public. I went to a supermarket here, and was wearing a skirt, sandals and a cute little top that matched my outfit and I was actually complimented by a lady that was slightly older than me as her comment was "it was nice to see a young lady dressed properly to be out in a store as you dont see that much anymore." This wasnt last summer but the summer before that I had her compliment me and I still remember it to this day and try to make sure I am presented properly in a store when I go out. Its sad to think of what this generation of lack of self respect, self pride and just lack of respect as a society will lead to in the future...which makes my job so much harder as a mom to make sure that my children will be raised with morals and respect and distinction between right and wrong. Wow, I really didnt mean to get so in depth with my response however it must have struck a nerve!! anyway...have a great day and Happy Mylotting!!

I remember a long, long time ago going out at night in our pj's....but we had a dressing gowns and slippers on and we stayed in the car. My girls probably never shopped in their pj's as the shops were not open at night. When I worked as a checkout operator I was surprised to see adults in pj's and slippers shopping at around 9pm closing...buying sweets and chips too...and I've even seen a woman in a nightie and open robe buying her kid lunch in the morning before school...lunch was chips and soft drink and sweet biscuits. There is a young woman living here in the village who never gets dressed in Winter. She wears her snuggly warm pj's all day, even if she has to go somewhere. Mind you, when the pyjamas are new, this IS dressed up for her. I always dress up to go shopping

I this thing working again yet?! I remember when it was a scandal to go out in public without dressing properly. My, what old fogies we are!! I'm with the supermarket on this, people should take some pride in their appearance. I always put on earrings when I leave the house and make sure that I'm wearing presentable clothing, not my old grubbies. It's a point of pride and not letting myself slip into "trailer trash" mode! I remember when we would whisper and laugh about women that wore curlers in public. That was before electric curlers and curling irons and the only way they could look beautiful for their husbands when they came home.

Where will the supermarkets draw the line between nightwear and daywear I wonder? My house is so cold in winter that I wear exactly the same in bed as out of it. And what if PJs suddenly become a fashion statement? Will they ban all the fashionable young things wanting to do their weekly shop in the latest high fashion togs? Joking apart, I agree with you. I´ve never seen someone in the supermarket in their PJs but there´s always someone somewhere with no shame! I don´t dress up exactly to go to the shops, but I do make sure I´m clean and presentable and change out of my work clothes.

Wow, don't think I've ever seen anyone go to the supermarket in their nightwear. Maybe it happens more late at night in the shops that are open 24/7? I think it would make me fee a bit uncomfortable to see that, and I'm normally quite a liberal person! Not sure exactly why it would make me uncomfortable, perhaps because it might make me wonder whether or not they realised that they were in their pyjamas. Had they perhaps just forgotten to get dressed?? I think I'd feel a bit embarrassed for them! So yes, I think I agree with the supermarket as well. I'm a slopping around the house person, but I don't think I could bring myself to go to Sainsbury's in my pyjamas, lol!
