First of all, I absolutely LOVE the dogs that people call "pit bulls". The term "pit bull" isn't actually a breed. American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bull Dogs, Bull Terriers, Cane Corsos, Presa Canerios are just some of the breeds that fall into the "pit bull" category because they all look very similar. Most of these dogs were originally bred for dog fighting, but also bred to be the most human friendly breeds there are. If they are bred properly (which most are not now) & raised properly, these are the most loving dogs you can own.

Yes, unfortunately pretty much every breed that has a blocky head, short hair & a deep, broad chest is put into the "pit bull" category. It's a shame because that includes a LOT of awesome dogs. Your dog sounds really sweet. :)

I do know a lot of places won't rent to you if you have an American Bulldog. She is a great dog. She is part of the family.

I didn't know that people put American Bulldogs in the pitbull category. I have a beautiful American Bulldog. She is so good with my 11 month old Grand Daughter. She is protective of her. She even plays with her. My grand daughter is starting to learn to walk and everytime she stands our bulldog is right there. She wants the baby to hold on to her if she starts to fall.

Certain dogs are more prone to being violent but it is also the way they are brought up. Just like each human is an individual, different from each other. Some people may bring up a child to be one way and they could be completely different in a good or bad way. Same with any creature. But I believe that German Shephards are number 1 for dog bites.

I think small dogs actually bite more. They just don't cause as much harm or deaths. If an animal or child is raised right there would be less of these things happening. Maybe people who want to own certain breeds should be required to go to classes on training the dog.

That would be a good way of preventing unwanted or mistreated dogs. They should do this with people having children as well

If only people had to go to classes to have a child. Maybe we wouldn't have as many abused and neglected kids.

Dogs no matter what breed are like kids. If you dont teach them from the start they are going to be very difecult to handle. I dont have a dog right now, we just adopted 2 kittens, but I have had dogs before and we tought them to love and respect people of all ages, colors and sizes.

You are so right. You have to teach them. You also have to teach your kids.

Yes how they are raised has a big part ot do with their behaviour. I do not agree with training them to be mean.

i agree to a point. most of the time it is the owners but i have heard of people that have trained their dogs and loved them...just given them the best life and in turn those dogs behaved. but for some reason one day the dog decides to attack. i think they should find out if the dog was abused or not before they blame the owner. i mean dogs will do what they want...its like when a human kills someone...do they lock up the parents??

I have heard of things like that also. I have wondered if maybe the animal had a medical problem and was in pain. They might not have known about since they can't talk and tell you something is wrong. Maybe they ought to do autopsy in these type cases and see if it was something like that.

Pitbulls are the friendliest and most loyal dog. You have to raise them right. There are more dog bites from chiuwuawuas. You just don't hear about them as much. Small dogs are the worst at biting kids and they have to get stitches.

sorry- as for who should be held responsible- I absolutely think the owner should be responsible. Though I guess there could be cases where it was beyond even the owners control. But if any negative thing happened because of negligence or intent then they should be punished.

I agree. I think they need to start making the owners responsible. Instead they are just banning breeds! That is wrong. I can see requiring a special permit for owners of some breeds.

I think it starts with the breeding first. If the dog's line is back to back breeding with parents and siblings and no new blood there will be some problems. Then, it goes to the owner. So many people want this big bad dog image and that is the first thing that they say - My dog is so tough or mean. Why would anyone want to say that? It's because they are stupid owners. We do know quite a few pit bulls that are absolutely wonderful and loving. Their owners take great pride in training and care.
