Is this really today’s big news

January 30, 2010 1:54pm CST
So I wake up today to learn the England football captain John Terry has had an extra marital affair with the ex-partner of another footballer he once played with in the same team. All of this leading for calls for him to be dropped as England Captain or even dropped from the squad for the world cup. Now I am not here to judge whether John Terry should be dropped or not but rather the fact that is this really the biggest news of the day with newspapers covering the story not just on their front page but also having several other pages covering it as well. Plus the news on TV featuring it as prominent news ahead of many other items. Have we become such a celebrity obsessed world that more important news such as the economy, Tony Blair being questioned, under trained doctors being allowed to practice and the devastation in Haiti gets demoted to minor stories in favour of this look at a footballers infidelities?

I know what you mean. Besides John Terry being a T*sser (and I've always thought so) the fact that he is "news" makes me sad and angry at the same time. You are right, with everything else going on both here and abroad it's pathetic that he's getting air time at all. At least Wayne Bridge has asked for his privacy to be respected as he has a son, otherwise this could turn into an even bigger circus than it is already. There are always "journalists" who will do anything to disrupt England's preparations for the World Cup. No doubt there will be more "revelations" nearer the time.

Sadly this John Terry story will continue to rumble on till probably after the World Cup when if England lose the finger will be pointed back to this episode for destroying the team. But it really is stupid why the newspapers deem it to be worthy of so mnay columns and no doubt will plough new depths to make it last longer that it needs to.

To be honest, this is one of the reasons why I don't buy a newspaper anymore. If I do want to read the news then I go on the BBC website or Sky News...and even the latter winds me up to the extent that I can't stand it and boycott it for a few days lol.

I know EXACTLY what you are saying as it's the same situation over here in Italy. This week Obama made his speech and instead of that being important, the news was the kiss he gave a certain blonde journalist pppfffffttttttt! I often wonder what we are coming to. The media is ruining everything, Negativity wins over the positives and bad guys are role models all thanks to them. All so wrong! When they are covering those stories, what are they distracting us from?

Why doesn't that surprise me in the slightest that Obama kissing in a journalist is seen by editors as a more noteworthy news item than what he actually had to say. The thing is I don't remember it always being like this, yes there were a couple of papers in the UK which were notorious from celeb gossip, but the rest of them covered the news, or at least the important stuff. Now it seems the opposite where there are now only a couple of papers which report the news and ignore this sort of cheap pointless journalism.

I think we HAVE become celebrity obsessed. Instead of things that could actually have an effect on our lives, such as politics or the environment, people's affairs/marriages/pregnancies are now the big news. Possibly because they're more interesting and more scandalous.

I believe it is because most of the time what the media portrays is not what the people need but what the people like or want to be shown on t.v. or the so- called human interest. I have a background in Mass Communication since I took up Journalism in Collegeon and this has been a long time debate among media people- on what should be aired on the prime time slot. This has something to do as well with what the producers want to air on t.v. If I will be paying for commercials for my product I would like it to be aired on a show that will be viewed by a lot of audience. We have to admit that lot of people enjoy watching sensational and controvesial news rather that something that has to do with our economy, business, etc. The ideal role of mass media is to educate the viewers but what happening is that it is the viewers who are dictating what should be shown on t.v. News about a certain politician's affair with his secretary for example would catch more attention rather than news about the country or world's economic status. The type of t.v. programs and news featured on t.v. will speak for itself on what catches the human interest and gets more attention.
