Despite its importance in business, Chinese is a language of a large population anyway. 1/6 people in the world speak certain type of Chinese. I do think learning some Chinese is good for non-Chinese speaking people. If you have something related to China you'd better start to learn the language right away. Or you can plan to have your children to take some course during 3-7 yrs old, thats the best age for language learning.

Some university in Malaysia make Mandarin compulsory for all majors, but in my university, we have options and you're free to choose from few languages. I took Mandarin and learn in for one semester and I found it amazing because now I get to understand what people around me are saying although I'm not a good speaker of the language. At the moment, I'm trying to learn chinese strokes too~

The best way to learn chinese language for me is in grade school. Why? because when you reach highschool it only needs furnishing. If you know the basics then you wouldn't have a hard time learning it til you are in college. By the way I didn't know there was a course offering for foreign language in College. If so it must be expensive because there are 5 types of chinese languages and each takes time to master. ^^
