myLot To Non-English Speaking?

January 31, 2010 4:45am CST
I Just Wanted To Ask All Of Reading This Discussion. What Do You Think About The Members Of myLot Which are Non-English Speaking? I Mean The Members Which First Language is Not English... My First Language is Not English Too, but i'm Trying To Discuss About Many Things Here... Few Days Ago, I Saw a Discussion where English Speaking Persons are Not Happy with Not Very Correct Comments on myLot, They Mean About non-english speaking... So, What do You Think About That? Its Great That People While Discuss Learning English? or myLot Don't Need That Kind of Members?

The Guidelines say that we should NOT "Post discussions, responses or comments criticizing members for bad/broken English or bad spelling. Everyone is welcome at myLot, we have users from all around the world and they are welcome regardless of their proficiency with the English Language." The discussion you saw was probably a violation of this and may well have been deleted. I think that it is, in some cases, acceptable to be critical in a constructive way because, especially as many are here to improve their English, that is one way in which one can learn. One needs to be careful about it, though. On a few occasions when I have corrected, in a spirit of helpfulness, what someone has written it has only served to embarrass and cause them to apologise. On the other hand, if someone asks for help with English, I am always happy to oblige!

I will try to remember, Vandana. Your English seems perfect here. My guess is that I shan't be very busy correcting you!

Ok owlwings, you asked for it. If you ever come across any of my posts, wherein I make some mistakes, please do not hesitate to correct me. I understand that there is every possibility of other mylotters pouncing on you for correcting me. Therefore, I suggest you give me corrected version in your response and highlight that bit so that I realize where I've gone wrong. :) Thanks for the offer.

Sometimes maybe i don't understand exactly about what discussion is, but the main what's wrote i understand and believe we all understand. So, mistakes we do almost all and i think its not the problem to chat(discuss) with others. I agree with you owlwings!

Hi, Intra. I am a non-English Speaking... I mean I am not a native english and I still earn this language . Probably I do mistakes and maybe some members hates this but I don't care... I am trying to do my best and to learn the language and after a year maybe, my English will be better than now... And...I have a question for you: Why you are always typing every word with big letters?

I Typing Every Word With Big Letters Because Its Seems Nicer For Me... More Beautiful... It Sounds Stupid, I Know... Why You Asking? Maybe Its Not Good?

I have wanted to ask that, too, Intra-trader, so I'm glad that KompitaPita has mentioned it. I would merely observe that hitting the Shift key so often must be tiring and slow you down somewhat. It does, also, make what you write rather harder to read for us poor, unaesthetic individuals!

Like owlwings said , it's harder for us to read your posts. It's maybe tiring for you, and it's tiring for us to read . It's just a friend-advice, I think it would me more easily for you to type without hitting the Shift Key for every word. But if you like to type in this way /with big letters/ then keep posting like that... it's your choice.

Well, I'm not a native English speaker and I'm using this website. I don't think that we're not needed here, as we can also bring our points of view and valuable information to this website. Not everyone is a good typer, or a person who can speak understandable English, but we're still all valuable.

My primary language is not English too. I did not saw the discussion you were saying. People are nit perfect, I myself screw up sometimes when submitting my discussion example typo graphical error, or wrong grammar. The main important thing is we understand each other and we learn fro each other.

Yes, You're Right! I Saw The Discuss Few Days Ago, When one Lady Wrote That She Tired From Many Comments with Not Correct Typing,Short or Not Interesting... So, I Thought That She Exactly Wrote About People Who Write in English With Mistakes and Can't Write So Confusing Texts Like English Speaking From Birth.

While it is stated in the posting guidelines members must know how to read and write English, it also states, that mylot welcomes people from all over the globe. For this reason members should not slam each other, or complain about those whose first language isn't English. If you see a discussion like that, slamming non-English speaking members, I'd report it. Its hurtful and wrong, and something personally I don't stand for.

I'm not a native English speaker but I've tried my best to speak it well. Maybe my English is not perfect but I don't think that will be a big problem to communication. Language is just a tool of communication for people ,some faults are allowed. We also often make mistakes in our native language, don't we? But I support the thought that use the language in the right way~ I'm keep on improving my English~

Well, I think this community need certain clear language. And because the major language in the world is English, so English language rationally applied. For non English speaker, we indeed have to learn. And discussion about mylot is one of medias to learn English. I heard that mylot has a rule that we have to post everything in English. I see this rule is for the sake of ours too. I myself am not an English speaker in my place. So I take this community as a learning media too.

Hi intra... Im a 1 of non-English speaking members too. Actually, i dont care have people comment on my english language. The main purpose i log in mylot is want to improve my english language.Even i using my broken english to share my thought or experiences as long as can let my audiences understand what i want to express. The pro and cons comments, i took as my catalyst for improving my english language. (=_+)

My native language is Bulgarian and it is very different from English, at the very least we use a different alphabet. However, I think that all non-english speaking members of mylot deserve to share heir opinion as they provide it with a good quality, I agree with some of the english natives that it is really annoying to see a massage full of mistakes and it is even worse if you can't understand what the author meant!

Mylot don't need members with poor english?? I believe that many of us mylotters are not speaking in English fluently. I'm not fluent in English yet Mylot still welcomes someone like us. like what owlwings said commenting on members poor english is against the rules. as long as we discuss something interesting in a nice manner its acceptable. Besides, commenting here polishes our English right... So just ignore those who comment on poor English. happy mylotting

What's great about mylot community is that we come from all corners of the world (oh my, the world is round) so it's really okay that we aren't that grammatically correct. As long as we're sharing our thoughts and others get the gist of it then it's okay. How would English speakers sound like if they try to use our native language to communicate with us, right? They'd probably sound weird and they'd make the same mistakes we are doing in using their language. I think we should have respect for other people's culture and be happy that we are finding ways to learn from each others experiences as we are expanding our horizons.
