How much is an average price to pay for a cemetery headstone?

I've never done this before. When setting aside money for a funeral and everything, what percentage of the money should be used for a headstone? Are they typically expensive? I guess a better question would be to ask how much should one expect to pay for a decent headstone? I found a local place ( http://www.portraitmemorials.com/ ), but honestly I don't know anything about this stuff. Is there a difference between different materials? Anything to avoid? Anything you would definitely recommend? Anything else I should know? Thanks!

you can usually get a small ground laid square for $500 or so,with a $255 stone base fee. but before you pick anything-if you've decided on a cemetary,i would ask them first what they allow before pricing at all.some cemetaries have strict rules about what can and cannot be placed on a grave.
