We all know that everything is expensive if you are living in a city.I am not sure how much money you have to spend for a day for all your basic need. There was an interesting program showing that a man try to survive with only $10 in his pocket for one day.He spends $1.7O for his bus fare to go to work from his own home in the morning. He then spend another $2.00 for a sandwich and $1.00 for a bottle of water during his lunch time.By the time,he has to get off from work,he then spend $4.50 in Macdonald for his hamburger set dinner.Since he only have $0.70 leave,he can only buy a pack of chocolate and walk home .By the end of the day,he really made it with only $10 a day.But people will ask that what he will eat the next day.Because he can't keep on eating sandwich and Macdonald for the rest of his life.On the other hand ,neither can he keep walking home after work.Especially during the winter when snow falls,it is going to be difficult. If you were him,do you think you can survive with only $10 a day? How would you use this $10 then?Share with us.

Hey!I am from India and $10 per day is a handsome amount for a middle class family like mine. With that I can not only meet my needs but also all of my family members.Even,I can save some for the next day,if I plan correctly. It is all our locality that fixes the amount we have to spend a day for a living.

In case it wasn't clear, that is $7.50 an hour. The MHR varies from state to state and only applies above a certain age and is applicable to most (but not all) jobs.

Well, my friend. If I were him, I could have saved much. You wonder, how! At first I would have made up my mind that I'll be on fasting for the day. And as a Muslim it's not so hard for me to fast all day long. We the Muslims can work during the month of Ramadan while fasting. Now, in this situation I won't have to spend any money for eating or drinking anything from dawn till dusk. I think you've got my idea very clearly. Now you can calculate how much money I'll be able to save then. Do I have to worry for the next day?

Hey friend! You asked me if I were in his place, what I would have done. I talked about my decision. If I go fasting, then I'll have to spend only for traveling. The rest will be saved and during the fast-breaking time I don't have to eat more. During the month of fasting I don't eat much more and I can survive with little food. Who can and who can't, that's not my headache. I'm born in poor family and grown up in an environment of scarcity. I've grown up with the habit of saving money. That's why I can save money with spending with much caution. Perhaps you've been grown up with much wealth. That's why you only think of big spending. Come to our poor country and feel the harsh realities of life. Please don't take it otherwise.

If you are talking about fasting, nobody has to use any money anyway. And I know that during the month you have just mentioned, they don't eat during the daytime ,but when the night came, they will eat much more. That would cost more money than usual.I don't think fasting is a proper response to my topic, because if everyone is saying things like :I don't go out ,and not taking any transportation ,or fasting for the day; then they don't need to use any money at all.But in realily ,life isn't like that at all.At least it is not the major practise of many cities around the world.

I've had it worse, I've had 10 bucks for a couple of weeks. That's not the idel situation. However, 1.50 would get me a bus pass for a full 24 hours so transportation wouldn't be an issue. But, food might be a bit of a bigger problem. I would have to buy foods that I could cary around, because I've got to eat several times a day. that 10 bucks wouldn't streach very far if I had to be out and about. With the economy the way it is, I'm almost glad I don't have to go out everyday.

Wow,you are so amazing and how can you do that?Living with $10 for so many weeks?I don't think you can do that in my city since my city is one of the most expensive on living according to world statistic.Butone think for sure it will save you lots of money if you never go out.But Unless,we ae living in a prison, otherwise, you have to go out to do our job.We need money for food and we nned money for transportationa nd emergency support as well. That's why I think living with only ten dollars is not recommend at all unless you really have no choice. But so far I do feel happy with all the 75 responding people for just one topic as well.In thinking of your responds will surely encouage me to post more topic since this topic attracts 75 people to responds ,wom...I feel happy with that.

I think you can handle it quite well if you can only spend $10 per day.I think pack lunch will surely save money but I hope that everyone can have enough for the day to survive.$10 is just not enough for many people except for those countries $10usd is already a lot of money. For $300 a month would be a very difficult budget for many people, except you will always stay home and never go out.But if so,people will just like living in a prison because you are faorced to stay in one place jsut because of money.

Many years ago (actually, 1957) there was a very popular book published called "Europe on $5 a day". It was updated many times and became $10 a day, then $25, then $50 ... these days $500 a day might easily be considered a 'budget' holiday!
Of course one's day-to-day existence is (or should be) considerably cheaper than holidays but I still doubt that many people in the West could live with any degree of comfort on $10 a day. Survival, however, is different. Survival only involves the basics of food, water and shelter - things that are sadly lacking at the moment in Haiti.
It is possible to find free shelter of a kind in most cities, though I have never tried it and certainly wouldn't recommend it. We have to assume that your man in the example has a home (with water supply, heating, lighting and cooking facilities) that he is paying for (or that is paid for somehow, at any rate) and that the $10 is what he has left over for subsistence.
In the UK, $10 is equivalent (at the current exchange rates) to a little more than £6. If I only had that to live on each day, I think that I could survive quite well (provided that I were prepared to give up my habits of smoking and drinking). I would buy food and cook at home rather than spend an exorbitant amount on a Macdonald's - if I did decide to eat out, there are much cheaper and better alternatives: for example, I could buy a meat-filled pie and a pre-packed bag of salad or some fruit for less than half the price; I could buy a loaf of bread (which would last me three days) for £1 or less; cheese and/or meat are the most expensive items but I could allow perhaps £1 a day for these. As for transport, that would depend very much on where I lived and where I worked. Provided that I had no more than about two miles to travel, walking would not be a big hardhip and cycling would be a better option (or do I have to include the cost of a bicycle and its maintenance in my daily budget?). Our bus fares are quite expensive - it would cost £11 a week to buy a ticket to ride freely anywhere in the city I live in - but I have a free bus pass, so it costs me nothing, provided I travel after 9:30am.
I think that it is possible, provided that shelter, heating and lighting are already paid for, to live on an average of £6 ($10) a day in this country!

For $10 a day I really think that I would be able to survive. There are a lot of ways to save money that the man in the experiment that you've referred to did not do. One thing that you can do to save money is to prepare your own food and pack your lunch. It is far cheaper to do that than to buy McDonalds and anything that is convenience. To drink tap water saves you a lot of money as well. I also wouldn't buy the chocolate either, I think there are a lot of more important things that you can do with your money than to have treats for yourself.

Doran, looks like that you don't have to use any money at all.I guess not.You siad you would pack your lunch but you still need to buy the food to prepare your lunch before hand.It cost more than $10 in a day when you first bought it.Tap water?maybe save in your city but not everywhere in this world. In some place ,water pollution are very serious. You can't drink any pure water from your tap in country like this.I am sure you can still live with $10 ,if you just walk to work(only when your work place is close by) and fasting for the day(no food) and carry a large bottle of water with you to work.I don't think you have to use any money at all.But life like that can happen one day or two for city people but not everyday. In fact,it is a hard day for anyone to live like that.Well, thank you for your repsonds and have a good day.

In the Philippines, $10 is equal to Php460. I would spend about Php10 for coffee in the morning, Php21 to go to work, Php100 for lunch (full meal), Php50 for snacks in the afternoon, Php100 for dinner, and another Php21 to go home.
That leaves me about Php100 for the day. This amount could represent my savings for the day. In all the other days that will come, I'd have Php3000 savings for the month.
Not bad really but constraining...

Hey,it is not bad for your city if only $10 usd can be a great day for you.I wish we can do that in my city too.But unfortunately,in my city,$10usd is nothing for people to survive in one day.The inflation is high and everything gets very expensive.I know what you mean because I have been to your country before for travel. For sure ,you can buy lots of things with only $10.Well,every country is different and it is good to have you respond to my topic. At least it give me more knowledge to get to know other country and more comment to earn another $10 from mylot^_^ Have a good day.

I have to ask, what's the country of this man you're talking about? I think it depends on the country. I visited your profile and found out you're from hong kong and hong kong dollars is of less value that US dollars so I assume this man is from hong kong. Am I right? But since you're asking this to all of us members of mylot I should give you an answer. My answer is yes. I can survive a day with 10 dollars on my pocket. And know what? It's already a lot for me. All I need is 3 US dollars a day. I'll spent 1 dollars for my food, 1 dollar for fare, 1 dollar for snack and some extra drinks. :D

Well, thank you for visiting my profile.I think $10 is nothing in my city but in other countries,it will be a lot different. If you can survive with only 3 dollars a day,I think ten dollars will be surely a good amount of money for you to spend in a day.You only have to use $1 for fares, what a good rate for transportation and I hope that we will have things like that happen in our city all over again.Actually it did happen many years ago,but for sure ,not anymore.Since enerything is getting so expensive in our city, with $1,you can't even buy newspaper. The cheapest transportation we have is called tram, and it will take $2.2 for one way travel.Well, everyhere is different and it is good to share all this information in mylot and the world smaller thorugh our communication.Have a good day and enjoy your $3^_^ today.

oh, yeah got that right. ten dollars is just good for buying snacks and never for a monthly budget. but in the third world country, it's already a big deal since you can buy a lot from ten dollars once it's been converted.
even to those who are earning more than five hundred dollars, it's still not enough because they get to pay a lot of bills and other terrible expenses.

It is going to be hard to live with only $10 per day.Inflation is going up everyday and everything gets more expensive than ever.Even a loaf of bread will coat over ten dollars in my city and it is almost impossible to live in this place with only 10 dollars per day.I think even we need at least sixty dollars to survive in this city everyday including transportation to work and lunch as well.In this city , we can always see that the rich became richer and the poor became poorer, so it is just two extreme always going on in this society and perhaps it is always true to the other countries as well.I hope all this things can be changed in the future but I know that it is not easy at all.If the rich people can spend less and willing to care more about the poor in the city , things will be totally different . We all want to see a harmonize city but without job and money , more people will get involve in criminal act to get money illegally .It is a sad picture for a society but it does exists. I hope the world can be a better place for us to live and we need to do more about it for our next generation.Happy mylot.

I think i could live off $10 a day. I would have to bicycle to work. Maybe on badweather days I could ask coworkers for a ride. If not just tough it out. If there's already food at house I would just pack my food and bring my water jug. No need to spend money if I do that. If not I've heard of people eating out of dumpster. I mean not yucky food but some places throw away packaged food that is still good. I would try to find those places and eat like that. I might spend like $1 on a coke. Gotta have my caffiene. I would probably skip lunch because I'm not a big lunch eater anyways. If I had a friend and a Chinese eating place nearby we could both throw about $2 -2.50 each and get a $5 dinner plate. Chinese restaurants always pile one serving so big and the rice is so plentiful you could share it with someone and still have leftovers for the next day. I would save whatever I had left that day in an emergency fund. Then next day I would start over.

For someone like me living here in manila, philippines, i should say ,yes. that is equivalent to 460 pesos per day ($1 = Php 46). Well, i gues it depends on the cot of living of a certain area. but if i would be living in your side of town, i do not think I can. Just sharing.

I myself can survive on $10 a day. On a average day I'd probably spend the most on electricity and making meals for my family. During the school year I do very little driving other than for me to go to work and I only work 2mi from home. I think it depends where you live and the type of lifestyle you can afford. My hubby would not be able to survive as he averaged $20 a day just for food then add cigs, and gas to get to work,.. yeah he's expensive but he's working on it.

Hi. wildlittlefan. I think that I could for just one day that is. And, it could only be used just for me and me alone. I would not be able to share it with anyone. I would have to save as much as I could. Everything that I buy will have to be only one dollar or less. This is the only way that I can make this ten dollars stretch.

I live in Italy...it's impossible to live with 8€ (= 10$) a day. I could live everyday life, but how can I have the money to pay the home rental or the bills?
I could save 2€ if I go to school or work by foot and I come back home to cook some pasta to eat. I think the minimum that I can spend is 5€ daily (= 6,3$).
