First of all, you'll need discipline, motivation, and a healthy dose of optimism. Don't think of yourself as fat or lazy. Think of the whole thing as a challenge with better health, mobility and looks (the looks being just a bonus) as a prize. A healthy, positive attitude will do a lot in getting you started - and consistent.
If you're eating more than 2,000 calories a day, try cutting back by 500 calories daily. If that's too drastic then do it incrementally - 200 cals first, and so on until you are able to skim 500 cals off the top.
Stick to the healthy, filling meals - proteins make you feel full longer than carbs, but that doesn't mean you have to cut back on carbs altogether. Don't deprive yourself either as that will only make you binge eat - if you want a sweet or some chips then give it to yourself as a rewards, just a tiny piece mind you. Like a nice slice of chocolate cake (try to pick the not so fattening ones, if you can) after a week's hard work. But leave it just at that, don't make a habit of rewarding yourself with food as that won't be too good in the long run.
And of course exercise. You can start with 1.5 hours a week - that's 3 30-minute workouts weekly. Start with cardio - running, jogging, walking, swimming, cycling. As you can feel your body start to get stronger up the ante with 5 30-minute workouts per week, and incorporate some strength training (good ol' weights) every other day. It may be hard at the beginning, but I promise you'll feel stronger and better (and healthier) as your body adjusts.
Of course support from friends and family helps a lot too. They'll help you eat healthy and even be your exercise buddy to keep you motivated and on track.
It will take some time though before you can actually see results with this program - by the 3rd month you'll feel stronger and healthier, and by the 6th you'll have lost inches. But I lost a good 50 pounds this way and kept it off the past 5 years so yeah I can say I'm proof that this works. Just hard at the beginning coz you'll have to the some major overhaul to your lifestyle and attitude about food and exercise but you'll adjust eventually so it's part of everyday life. Just don't obsess about it too much - that's unhealthy too. Your body is just one aspect of yourself - and you're losing weight not to look like Angelina Jolie but so you'll feel healthier. Hope this helps and best of luck!

The only proven way to lose weight is consistency and determination.
Use exercise and healthy diet both to reach your goals. Your only sacrifice should be portions of junk food. Don't eliminate an entire food unless you feel it is a trigger that you just can't control.
Learn proper portion sizes and stick with them. Divide your plate into quarters and use 1/4 for protein, 1/4 for unrefined carbs, 1/2 for veggies.
Learn the difference between refined and unrefined carbohydrates. You don't want white sugar or white flour. The white carbs are the bad ones.
Exercise: do both cardio and strength training. Cardio will burn more calories quicker but strength training will burn more calories in the long term. Strength training is what boosts your metabolism. Do a lot of reading on proper exercise and nutrition to find what works for you.
Outside motivation: Join online forums of people doing the same thing as you. A good one I can suggest is sparkpeople.com . It's free and has people doing a variety of different things to lose weight. You can join my facebook group which is a group of moms who are working on being and staying fit. Most of us had started in order to lose weight.

The easiest, healthiest and most effortless way of effectively losing weight is clean eating. What's clean eating? It's eating whole foods that are good for your body instead of all the processed junk that's clogging our bodies, making us fat, lazy, and depressed. Also, what it doesn't mean is eating bland, cardboard-esque food. For more information, check "The Eat Clean Diet" by Tosca Reno and for some tasty recipes, try http://www.cleaneatingonline.com. Happy weight loss!
