It’s a good idea to have an idea of the calories that most food items have. If it is a packed thing then the label is sure to have the calories that the substance has.

Losing weight is a personal decision. Therefore you need a personalized plan tailored to your needs and goals. Whichever way you may want to lose weight, it all goes down to same basic principle: in order to lose weight, you need to spend more calories than you consume. It depends upon you if you wanna go on a diet, or exercise. You can do both though, and it can be highly effective. Just remember to take it easy and start with simple exercises gradually increasing its intensity. The same goes for diet, don't starve yourself.
There's a program in the internet about carb rotation diets. The principle behind it is really interesting. I still haven't tried it though.

My husband and I have decided to go low carb and see how that goes. We are both trying to lose a significant amount of weight. So I have purged the house of white carbs and will be buying more whole grain and stuff. . So we are both working out on that. Since I have not been active, I am taking baby steps like splitting 20 minutes in 10 minute increments. So like I will do 10 in the morning and then 10 at night. When I get used to that, then I will increase the resistance on my bike and split it into 15 increments.
I am using a website called Sparkrecipes that have healthy recipes and been using that for ideas for meals. Also I got a recumbent bike and my husband has a home gym. You can also use Sparkpeople which is its sister site and it has ideas on losing weight.
