How would you feel about a 10% donation after making over $500,000 each year?

A friend of mine brought up a good discussion. She stated that she kind of feels as though people who make over a certain amount of money each year should be required to donate 10% to a humanitarian cause. Example causes would be feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, etc. Now, the amount would be substantially high. We're talking at least $500,000 and only if they've been making that much at least 3-5 years.
Do you think that would be a fair thing to do? I feel as though it could benefit everyone in whole because there would be less poverty conditions and we'd be helping one another. I feel that no one really NEEDS that kind of income each year, so why not donate a small portion to those who do? A $500,000 salary would only be a $50,000 cut which would seem so minimal to those making that much money. And of course, the amount of years in that specific position means a lot as well because just because someone made that much one year, doesn't mean they will the next. Anyone is dispensable and can get fired or whatnot at any time.
It's an interesting topic to discuss. What are your thoughts?

I totally agree with you on the face that the people earning this don't really need all of that cash, and they should donate some to special causes, I know that I most certainly would. However I don't think that it is fair to incur the donation by force, it would just become another tax, we all hate taxes right!
But yeah, the people who make this amount and donate nothing are just pure greedy and selfish.

I kind of feel it would be okay to do so. I mean maybe they could still get a tax break of some sort. But like then it wouldn't exactly be fair because those who make less than that wouldn't have to donate. I dont know, I just wish there was more we could do in whole to help others in poverty

Hi Dee. I actually know a religion which asks their followers to donate 10% of all their income to their church. It doesn't matter how big or how small they earn, they still have to donate 10%. Although a cut of all these donations goes to the expenses running their church, a portion does go to humanitarian cause.
The funny thing is, I heard that when their followers do not donate the correct amount, they get called up in church, in front of all the other followers.

Sounds like some of the Catholic churches I know around here. I don't know what they use the money for, though, so I don't judge. Maybe they should cut back some of our income taxes and use a portion of it for humanitarian causes. I personally wouldn't mind the taxes as much if it were that way. Maybe even just 2% but that can go a long way when the whole US is taking the cut.

No, I don't believe it's right to require anyone to donate any amount of money to any cause. That's entitlement thinking. The IRS takes it's share when we pay income tax, if we own property we pay property tax, we pay for the tags on our vehicles and to have a driver's license. There is already too much taken from us. Anyone who earns a living, no matter how small or large their income, has the right to decide for themselves what to do with their money. They earned it...so no, it's not fair to expect the rich to do something simply because they're rich.

Part of what you earn is taken in taxes. But many rich people donate not because they are so gennerous but because if the donate a certain amunt the "earn" less and fall into another category as taxes go. And people get easily acostumed to luxuries. Everyone of us.

If you are making that much in year, 10% is a piece of cake. With that money in a right foundation can go a long way in helping our less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world. Remember:

Can't really lie though its so difficult but charity calls and sometimes before we could give to charity we have to re budget one's expenses for that month, its really a swell task and huge donation....

deemazing thats a great idea and it would have to be enforced as those who do make that much or a lot more do not necessarily feel any sorrow for the homeless or anything like that. So this would indeed feed people and put people to work, and in houses again. I am all for it.Time someone thought about the homeless and jobles and did something about it too. good discussion there.
