Hi pet lovers, I always want to travel with my dog. However, I have no idea what do I need if i take my dog with me to travel to other countries. Is there anyone had such kind of experience before? I don't want to put my dog in the cargo compartment, I rather buy an extra flight ticket and bring my dog with me in passenger cabin. Is that possible? Or is there any restrictions? Thanks!

agnesnlau,
Firstly, it would help if you can provide a little more information before people can advise and help you here.
1. For a start where are you from?
2. Where are you going to?
3. What is the breed and age of your dog?
4. Is your dog vaccinated?
5. Which airline are you planning to travel with?
6. What is the duration of your trip?
I hope you would not be uncomfortable sharing the above information to get your answer, otherwise you can always call your airline's reservations and your destination's animal quarantine and control or primary department.
Have a nice day.

agnesnlau,
First of all, you need to apply for an Import Permit for your pet to fly your pet dog to Hong Kong, even if it is for transit. For more details on application procedures as well as import requirements, please visit the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's website (below).
http://www.afcd.gov.hk/english/quarantine/qua_ie/qua_ie_ipab/qua_ie_ipab_idc/qua_ie_ipab_idc.html
Basically, you will need to print out the form (Form No. AF240) (PDF format) in the site, fill it up and post it. Facsimile copies of the form are also obtainable from the interactive telephone no. (852) 2708 8885.
Please enclose a self-addressed envelope together with the application (No stamp is required). The approved permit will not be dispatched by fax.
As an overseas applicant, you may nominate a person or agent in Hong Kong to apply for the permit or collect the permit on your behalf.
Processing time is 5 working days and the fee is HK$432. As an overseas applicant the fee should be paid by a bank draft in Hong Kong currency payable to "The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region". The bankdraft must be drawn upon a licenced bank in Hong Kong.
The permit is valid for 6 months and for one consignment only. Animals must be imported on or before the expiry date of the permit.
Note:
You need to make allowances for mailing time, and meet the health requirements such as vaccinations and/or blood tests.
Pets in Cabin
Cathay Pacific Airways & Singapore Airlines
As far as these 2 airlines are concerned, they do not allow pets in their cabins other than service dogs. Pets such as dogs, cats and birds will be crated and transported in the flight's cargo compartment.
United Airlines
United will allow your dog to travel with you in the cabin if it is small enough to fit and stay comfortably in a carrier under the seat in front of you. The carrier for your dog must be correct-sized, well-ventilated, leak-proof and conforms to the following specs:
Hard Case: 17x12x8 inches (43x30x20 cm)
Soft Sided: 17x10x10 inches (43x25x25 cm)
The fare for your dog should be U$200 excluding prevailing taxes and applicable charges. You can always check again upon making your flight reservations.
I do not know about you and whether you are able to do all the above tasks. However, all is not lost if your preferred airline does not accept your dog onboard or the application is too much of a hassle. You still can let your dog travel with you by engaging an International Pet Shipping Company in your area where they will literally take care of everything to let you have your pet in Hong Kong. The only issue will be not having your pet traveling together with you in the aircraft cabin. If you are interested, you may check out the link below for more information.

I hope that this will be of help and that the both of you will be able to travel together to Hongkong.
Take care.

I have two dogs and they are both miniature poodles. They are called Secret and Magic. I did some traveling in my home country with Secret. I took him on a train to the North East. I went on a ferry over to the Channel Islands and for that he went in a travel box on the car deck. I got pet passports but they have expired now. I am not able to take my dogs overseas because I now have a disabled son. Usually on planes dogs travel in a travel box. It is nicer to travel with a dog by train. I remember how challenging it was to get a pet passport for my dogs. They had to be micro chipped and then have rabies jabs. Next they waited 6 months before the blood test. It cost a lot of money. Good luck traveling with your dog.
