How do you remember things?

Hello dear members, I've often seen people having trouble remembering stuffs like names, phone numbers etc. Students have problem remembering specific terms and numerical data. In day to day business we often have to remember lot more than that. Each of us have different methods to remember things. The technique we adapt sometimes seems a bit weird. We have secret strategies too. A very common way of remembering a name is to follow the sound and then relate it to some known things or to some feature the person has. There are different ways to remember numerals too. The most popular method is to find some equivalence with English letters and then make a sentence with it. These are the methods I personally adapt sometimes. What are the things you find it most difficult to remember? What techniques did you develop to remember those things?

Oh my God. That is a serious problem. You are in deep trouble when you don't remember your anniversary. It sounds like you are quite busy person. You have to focus on other things that you consider more important in your life. If in any way you can associate those numbers with names and face and whatever characteristics that signifies the particular person, you will find it easier to remember them. Suppose there is a phonetic use which may seem very queer and funny at first, but with deep consideration you will understand how effective it is. A seven matches another word, heaven, and the word heaven can be related to another word Christopher. Take care God bless you

Hello, When I first started learning english and that was a few years ago, I didn't know the meaning of words like "profile", "fragile", "ambivalence" etc. I've come a long way. As you are now a member of myLot, you will get lots of chances to improve your writing skills, vocabulary etc. Here you will learn from discussions, you will have conversations with other people and learn to deal with arguments, facts etc. This is the right place to exercise your writing skills and to demonstrate some positive opinion. I would like to say one thing, please don't give up. If you are serious about writing effective english you should start by building your vocabulary and reading lots of subject matters written in standard english. Take a look at this website www.wordhacker.com You may find some good literature for free over here www.gutenberg.org Thanks so much for the response Take care God bless you

Hello, What you are saying is definitely true. Actually when you are taking quick notes of something, you are recreating the original thing. This serves as a strong visual input to your mind. As the involvement with the matter is much more in taking notes, it becomes far more effective than just reading. Also if you review the visual map when you are relaxing or not doing anything important, that keeps the memory alive. Thanks so much for such an interesting comment God bless you

I usually don't try to remember anything that I'm not really interested in.. but its rather hard to do that while being a student. We got to remember so many things.. most of which we obviously aren't interested in or think that their basically useless. Anyway, I don't really have any method of remembering something. If I'm learning for a test or exam or anything like that I just keep learning until I remember all of it or at last most of it.. but remembering it for just this one single reason isn't enough to remember it forever.. Heck, I usually forget everything I learned for a test or exam withing days or even hours after I'm done with that subject.. simply because I don't feel the need that it will be useful later in my life. And if it ever will be really needed in my life than I will just look it up somewhere and learn it when I really need it instead of just learning it for the sake of passing a test or exam or anything like that.

Hello, Yes, interesting thing are easy to remember. Things get complicated when it comes to stuffs we don't like at all. The key to remember academic stuffs is to learn it beyond mastery. That means if you learn much beyond your syllabus, you will go beyond the limit of detest and will start to like it and may even get satisfaction out of it. Once you take this reading to the level of independent research, as if you are doing your PhD thesis, it gets deeply rooted inside your memory. Like, once you learn swimming, its hard to get drowned. Take care God bless you

Hi, As I've suggested to on of my friends earlier, when you make a note and read it, what you actually do is, you convert the data into an image. As images are comparatively easier, your data saved as an image file becomes a handy tool. We often hang the data in a form of table or map or diagrams on the wall so that we may take a look every now and then. This serves as a stimulus, a constant reminder of the details. Thanks for such a nice response God bless you

I usually remember things by events that happened at the moment I received a new information. For example, if I am reading a book and listening to music, I remember the data according to song I am currently listening, so it's easier to recall it later. I first recall the song and then try to resemble the things I've memorized during verses or chorus. That method seems to be really working for me.

Hi, Yes. This is all about setting up a relationship. I mean, the thing you want to remember should have strong logical or other kind of relationship with another thing which is quite familiar. Generally we don't forget the things we like most. So its quite natural that we will have much ease in remember anything related to them. By creating this tiny relations we create a huge cobweb like structure inside our mind. Thanks for such an interesting response. Take care

Hi, I believe, we remember only those things that we are very serious about. I mean to say of course you are serious about your contacts. But one can never forget the names of his son, daughter. He may even remember the name of the cousin of one of your neighbor even if you might not have seen her. Sometimes, we really need to forget a name. But it seems impossible even if we try real hard. This is because, when we are trying hard to forget it, what we are actually doing is that, we are reminding ourselves about the name again and again. Thanks for the response dear God bless you

there are incredible and amazing people who have sharp memory. i think it is a gift or talent, and at the same time, a skill which can be developed. for people like this, they do not need any method. however, as a mortal and ordinary person, i direly need a method to sharpen my memory. what i do is, like you said, to relate important things to known and popular things. for names, i repeat them and associate those with popular names and faces. i have difficulty with numbers, admittedly.

Hi, Dear friend, there is a fixed amount of IQ that a human being is gifted with at the time he is born. This level of IQ hardly grows or reduces. We just learn techniques to do things quickly and accurately. Different people will take different amount of time to do the same calculation depending upon their individual IQ and the technique he is applying. But when it comes to memory, it becomes quite unpredictable. Of course there is a fixed capacity. But no quotient can limit that. Here you can always push the limit. Thanks for such a sincere response God bless you

I will try to memory things for several times. It's very useful. Like memorizing English word, I will try to memory it again after forget it, and try the third times, and forth times if I can't remember it. And also I will try to use it as much as possible. It's hard to forget since it was related with other things. Happy everyday!

Hi, Yes a very strong relation with things that already exist in your memory helps remembering things. The normal process of remembering a particular thing happens like this, 1 We take our first input. After it the memory is being faded away slowly. Lets suppose it takes a very specific amount of time T1 to completely fade away. 2 We take our second attempt of remembering things. This is actually a revision phase. This time the memory is kept intact for T2 duration. Now T2T1, which means the memory is kept for a longer period of time. 3 You have to initiate the 3rd phase somewhere between your second revision and the time limit T2. Then it is remembered for another duration T3. Here T3T2. This means T3 is considerably much greater than other time slots namely,T1 and T2. One may repeat these phases as many times as one wishes. A little difficult material may take more than 3 phases. A strategic choice of your revision time and constant observation of the capacity and behavior of your mind is really necessary to make this method more effective. Thanks so much for the response Take care God bless you

I try to wrap it up into a story, and then tell the story. If you hear something in story form, you almost always remember it, nearly word for word, EVERY time. I appreciate you.

Hello, Yes, we all have trouble remembering text books, but we are on the contrary remember a story quite easily. So why not convert the text book into a story. I think, every one of us has at least for once in their life has adapted this method. When we try to remember a whole piece of useful information that have high coherence, we produce in our mind some kind of series of events, a linked list, where each element bears some reference to the element immediately followed by it. Thank you so much for this response Take care

Hello my friend. I have the most trouble with numbers, so I look at them, repeat them a number of times to myself, and try to associate them with something, such as a birthday or a number with special meaning. A trick I have for remembering names is to slowly go through the English alphabet in my head or even aloud. That often does the job :) Karen

Hi karen, I think there are couple of methods you can try out and then stick to whichever most suits you. One method is the visual map, where we don't actually relate or associate things. We just visualize the combination as an entire image, ignoring the fact that they have distinct number images in themselves. So here, we just have to remember a picture, the details of an image, nothing more than that. There is another method that is adapted by many people I know. Here we take each number seperately and then find some similar looking letter from English alphabet. For example, 3 looks similar to a B and you can consider 1 as either an L or an I. In this method you follow a certain table where you have fixed some values for numbers previously and then maintain it all along without changing it. Now that you have an equivalent letter for each of the number, you just make a sentence with them. You may also associate this sentence with the person whose phone number you are remembering, or just leave it as it is. It is easier to remember a sentence than to remember a series of numbers. Right? Take care God bless you

I remember things by First breathing deeply while closing my eyes.... I think of things related to that thing and try to make connections with them... IF it's not effective I usually ask people who are close me about that thing that I need to remember : D

Yes, I do agree with you on that. A comparatively relaxed atmosphere boosts the capacity of your memory and it is very easy to make those association when you are in a very peaceful surroundings. This process of association is little bit difficult, though you have to go through it only for once. The more strongly connected and coherent your data are, the longer you will remember it. Thanks for the response Take care God bless you

Remembering things is a challenge for me and I keep trying ways to remember people, phone no and many things as and when they come across. I try to relate things with practical events, find out some pattern which may not be very common for all and may be specific to the person or the thing we want to remember. When I hear a melody voice on the call and do not have any idea who is on the other side of the call - I try to find out the pattern of talking, I will keep talking to him and at the same time keep guessing if there is something from this chat which I knew or can relate. Practice practically will work to remember things, think about it :)

Hello, yes I completely agree with you. Practice do help to improve your memory power. There is no definite limit specified for the capacity of human memory. Some methods are just more effective than some others. With whatever method suits you the most, you can increase your memory power tenfold with it. Thanks so much for the response Take care

When I was still studying, there were so many ways that I did to memorize terms. I use my classmates to remember something. In my mind I assign them some terms in my mind without them knowing. It was helpful for me because when I look at them, I remember the principles I was able to answer. I didnt have so much trouble memorizing numbers. It was easy for me to memorize numbers compared to terms.

Hello, Our mind remembers thing according to relationships of things. I mean, how a thing we want to remember will be remembered is entirely dependent on how we are relating this thing with items already in our memory. Sometimes they actually have very well defined relationships, sometimes we make our own relations in order to remember those things. It is nice to hear that you don't have any trouble remembering numbers. That means you've adapted a very effective mechanism and your brain has also been used to it. Thanks for the response God bless you
