silly question of a newbie: Do you have to rate everyone who responded?

There really aren't any 'rules' or regulations in regard to rating people or 'choosing a best response'. Its based solely on a matter of opinion.
Personally, I rate people positively when I feel that they have really added something to the conversation. Since you can't really determine(near as I can tell) who's rated you and for what reasons, it would be safe to assume that submitting a positive or negative rating is merely a matter of personal preference.

Thanks. What a relief I thought I was a bit rude with my discussions for not rating anyone.

Absolutely, and rating someone only takes a split second. Why wouldn't you rate people? Knowing that it is, in some form, helping that person. I tend to submit positive ratings when merely just reading through a thread, even if I have no ambition to actually contribute to the posting.

..hi.. welcome to the mylot family.. You need not to always rate or choose best response to your discussions.. it is your own choice and decision.. If you think the response was good enough, then you may choose the best response or if you think the comment was good and it deserves a positive rating, then do it.. What i do for me is, if the response was worth it, I choose it as the best response.. It is just like giving and receiving here.. you share and you are rated and you do it to others also.. Although it is not mandatory as I've mentioned.. It is always your own choice.. but it would be nice to give due credit to answers whom you think is worthy.. happy mylotting..

Hi Curious
One doesn't have to rate, but I do, since it helps people get higher numbers on those little stars you see. I always rate positive, and if someone has said something vaguely ugly, I just don't rate them at all. Only twice, for horrid things, have I rated a response to a discussion of mine negative.

Hi! Welcome to Mylot. I think it's up to you whether you want to rate who responded to your discussions. It's always our preferences if we would like to choose best response and rate the people. However these ratings will affect the people involved because it can either increase/decrease their reputation, depending on what you've rated. Enjoy mylotting :)
