I'll never forget when my grand daughter learned about the dictionary in kindergarten/first grade. She was amazed! I was teaching her about how to use it and she couldn't quite get it, then I put it on her level and told her to look up Granddaughter" (at that time she had an imaginary friend called "grand daughter". I had told her she was my grand daughter and she insisted she wasn't she was Kelly and then made grand daughter her little friend) BUt she was amazed to see "granddaughter"s name in the dictionary!! I went on to find Mommy, Daddy, Grandma and other words that she knew... she ran for the highlighter and started marking them out so she could always find them. Then I used that to back track to teach her how the dictionary works. She sat for many days "reading" the dictionary... then when she'd put it down....I found myself picking it up and skimming the pages for new or forgotten words! Lot of fun in a dictionary!

That's a great teaching strategy coffebreak! :) When teaching kids a teacher should provide ways to make it easier for them. I love this response and it's good to know that you're actually transforming a seemingly boring thing to do into an interesting one. :) I hope you become an effective teacher someday :) Take care and God bless!

Well, I am the best teacher there is... a mother and grandmother!! But I learned with my kids, if you make the "assignment" relate to what they know or like, they will learn alot faster and easier. I mean, my GD zipped through the dictionary looking for things she knew about or related to her, learned how to use a dictionary and had a blast doing it. But homework from school just lists misc words for them to look up to teach them how to use a dictionary... where's the fun in that!

In my case, I would have fun with an Encyclopedia. Yeah, some dictionaries would provide pictures of the words that they define but, an Encyclopedia is better with that. Its thicker and I could spend a good amount of time with it, compared to a dictionary. I mostly use a dictionary for reference when I don't know what a particular word means (^_^")

Hi cecil!
I think it is good to read one word everyday from dictionary, however, if you try to
use the word, you learn, then you could remember the same. I always keep looking
new words in dictionary, when I do not know the meaning of any particular
word and also encourage others to use dictionaries. Reading encyclopedia is another
kind of fun and we may not be aware about many things/topics, which are available
in Encyclopedia.

i guess you're right its kind of boring to read any one of those things.but if i would choose which one i like reading,i would choose the encyclopedia because reading it is just like if your on the internet and every topic you look there you will find it.unlike dictionary where you cant even amuse of yourself by looking on to pictures because in dictionary you cant find not a single picture to feast your eyes on.

I second this. Add the fact that you can actually know the history of the word other than it's meaning in the encyclopedia

For me it is encyclopedia, because it has pictures, it states history there. Like the word biology, it will say study of living things, but in encyclopedia, it will explain everything about biology, its branches, the scopes of learning. Some pictures also are there, compare to dictionary, specifically the meaning is only there. What I love in encyclopedia, it is a concise meaning of a certain noun. It tells everything about that word or noun. While dictionary like thesaurus, tells the meaning of words only.

I think i will go for encyclopedia, if i have really no choice.. lol =D as i'm a not a fan of reading, both of them are equally 'hateful' to me.. lol =D
But the reason i choose encyclopedia over dictionary is that, it has got pictures in it, and it's got a much clearer explaination to things which i find interesting.. lol =D

I love reading Encyclopedias, because it explain things that you never knew about, and it's just fun to read.. I remember when I was young, and internet was not really a big thing then, I would love assignment that would need some research, cause I like opening our encyclopedia and looking for that certain thing or event and just reading about it...

Though the encyclopedia is much more interesting to read, I rarely open them anymore. They are just hiding in my parents bookshelves right now and merely just a collection books. Though dictionary only contains words after words, I still used them until now. I do have a pocket sized dictionary at work and a bigger one in our house.

Yah. Carrying a pocket-sized dictionary makes you powerful in terms of vocabulary :) My former professor requires us to bring one with us and it really helped us in studying. Thanks and God bless. X

In my native tongue I prefer to read the encyclopedia. I like gathering knowledge about all different types of things. The articles in encyclopedias are just the right length to gain some knowledge without getting bored about a subject. At the same time I do like to read dictionaries in other languages. I like learning words in other languages and try to look up words so that I can put sentences together and understand a simple conversation.

I would prefer encyclopedia. Dictionary is just my reference to find some difficult words. I will find the definitions, and other forms of a word in it. So, i seldom use it.
While encyclopedia is the source of information. I can learn a lot of things from it and it's fun.

Since I'm a science geek, I'd have to go with the encyclopedia. In fact when I was 10 years old, I did read one of the volumes from my encyclopedia set. That was several years ago of course, now I wouldn't have the time to read such a big book, even in a year! Too many kids, too much housework to do, too much writing to do for work...

Well the encyclopedia is more fun to read but more of a hassle because when I get into one I want to get into all. Whereas a dictionary may be easier and more relaxing. I enjoy to read both actually. I love the dictionary too. Perhaps a bit bulkier if you have a good one but all the same, you can stay put for a longer period of time, relaxing and reading while learning new things with a dictionary vs an encyclopedia. I love encyclopedias too though. Both are awesome reads.

For me it is the dictionary as I love to try and learn new words to try to use when writing reviews. Although likewise I tend to forget them because I end up not using them often enough to become part of my vocabulary.
I find reading encyclopedia's boring and tend to only refer to them when try to discover an answer to a crossword clue, lol.

I like reading both Dictionary and Encyclopedia. But I prefer encyclopedia the most. Because from dictionary, I will learn new words but I cant keep them in mind. I will get bored in few minutes. On the other hand encyclopedia, it will be more interesting.

I find it the Encyclopedia is more entertaining to read. Lots of stuufs to learn. I used to sit hours scanning the pages of those colorful set of Encyclopedia and there was also a medical encyclopedia. The dictionary i have used during those times when we played scrabble. Was also very helpful to enrich your vocabulary.
