What's in Your Attic?

I am installing new insulation in my attic and was working away there today when I came across an old newspaper. The house was constructed in March 1933 and the newspaper dates from November of the same year. It is very dry and brittle and I haven't dared open it yet in case it falls apart. But I am quite excited to find it and read the news from seventy seven years ago. Have you ever found anything old in your house?

Only Mr Croc. Our house was converted from maisonettes about 1980ish so if we found anything it wouldn't be very interesting. There is lots of stuff in the attic though, mostly books I didn't want enough to read but couldn't bear to take to a charity shop and lots of ornaments that I have to keep moving because Mr Croc keeps buying them.

Please don't get him stuffed. I don't think any of use would like that.

Me and my husband are going to remodel are attic as soon as we can. But our home was built in 1909. It is a very big home with 5 bedrooms. we have a old fashioned phone booth in our house which I think it pretty neat. we have the old fashioned windows and some glass door nobs. So far we haven't found anything in our home like you did that was very old. But you still never no what could be found in an old home.

I bet that somewhere there will be something memorable. Often when you take off wallpaper you can find things written by the original decorators. Good luck.

we did find some very old wall paper with roses on it. We still have a lot of remodeling to do. But I am sure there is lots of stuff to find that will be very different. I like old and antique things. Thank you for posting about your place. Have a great day.

The paper is in such poor condition that I don't think that what is left of it is worth anything Gabs. A pristine copy would be worth about £40 apparently. It is still a nice find though. XXXX

I have not had a discovery like yours but one of the construction workers painted his initials in the attic. I forget what they are but the date is 1923! If I ever finish the attic, which I'd like to do but probably can never afford, I'll leave those initials and frame them like a picture. I would like to know what is in your newspaper. Look up newspaper restoration or find an antiques dealer and find out how to safely read it then let us know!

That's worth preserving. The paper isn't complete but I am going to see what I can salvage. At the moment it's folded, but the headline is about the rise of Nazism in Germany. That was the year that Hitler came to power.

Nothing!!! I have never been up in my attic, not even poked my head in to have a nosy. The spiders and creepy crawlies can stay up there. It must be interesting to find a newspaper dated 1933. You will have to let us know what the news was back then. Be careful though as the newspaper could be worth a fortune lol. I havent found anything old in my house.

I don't think that it's worth much Cinders. It's bone dry and very brittle. The news so far is that I can read the adverts easily and there's something about agriculture. Someone's bumped someone else off too!

Just my Dad the first time he came here. He was sitting quietly in the lounge room the whole time. Earlier, he had been getting lost in the hallway and entrance...

my house was built in the late 1970's, the first owner I think bought it as a rental property - anyway, there were renters in it when I moved in. the attic is barely more than a crawl space, and even less since we added on in 1999 (not up, out back.) The kitchen was already a lofted type ceiling and we had the addon off the kitchen do it as well - and put windows in the lofted end called "eyebrow windows" for the cats - even an extra wide sill - tho Oliver fell off it recently http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/2195209.aspx

Hi p1key, When I wasliving in London with my mum, hubby and I decided to move to a flat just at the top of my mum's road, well one day hubby went up into the attic to put something up there, he found an old war British soldier's helmet and a sword, I still got the sword but the helmet has gone because my sister wanted it to make a hanging basket for her plants. I was so angry as hubby just gived it to her. It would be interesting what news it has on that paper. Hugs. Tamara xxxxx

A sword is fabulous! I wonder if it belonged to a previous owner of the flat or was a "souvenir" of war.
3 Feb 10
Hi p1key, The previous tenant was a young lady, but if you are around next time you can pop in and have a look, see what you think. Hugs. Tamara xxxx

has anybody answered 'a portrait of myself' yet? anyway there is an attic, sort of in this flat (storage space above the hallway) but i have no idea what is in it as i don't have a pair of step ladders to go looking. i would imagine not much, but now i am curious and next time maintenance comes round i might borrow their ladders and go looking.

Rat catchers are not that popular here so if you want to get rid of the rats you have to trap them yourself

What inside in my attic is full of junk and really old newspapers from the past. hehe and baby toys when I was still in my diapers. I'm having problems with my attic because its full of dust and dirt and I had a hard time cleaning it. Someday if I'm able to land a job I would renovate my attic and create a new hangout with my friends and family to enjoy with. hehe
@p1kef1sh (45681)

Well I hope that you get that job and carry out your renovation.

You mean besides Mr.Panda?;) (Ok he's not old really, just older than me) Well, my HOUSE is quite old, it's about 107 years old. I don't know what the oldest 'thing' in my house is though. I have a panda teddy bear that my Auntie bought me BEFORE I was born, he's just over 35 years old. Maybe he's the oldest thing in my house.

I have a teddy like that too. But he's gone to America with P1kelet for his hols.

Since I live in a manufactured home I don't have an attic, but my old house I used to live in, my brother still lives there, there is tons of my old toys and bikes. I need to go there one day and see what kind of treasures I have up there!

It does sound interesting to have a paper that old in your attic but the question comes to my mind-when was the attic last cleared out?! If you can get it open it would be interesting to let us all know what happened that year. As for my attic, there is hardly anything in there, most of it went to the skip and the rest to the charity shop! hugs LoLo
@p1kef1sh (45681)

The newspaper was buried under 70 years of insulation LoLo. I moved it to put in the new stuff. I am going to try to put what I can of it together but it is bone dry and just disintegrates when I touch it. XXXX

What we found in our new attic was a cardboard portfolio of pictures with for Jo written on the outside. Don't think it was terribly old though as the pics are all in colour.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
3 Feb 10
I wonder who Jo is/was? They don't sound too old, but then again I heard someone say that the 70s were a long time ago and they feel like yesterday to me!

Wow, it must be so cool to find something that is over 76 years old. I would be interested in reading all the cool news articles inside of the newspaper. But then again it would probably break if I tried to turn the pages. I don't have anything in my attic. Happy Reading.
@p1kef1sh (45681)

The paper is very brittle and it does break up. But I can read the text still.

Hi p1kef1sh, I think the newspaper should have the history value, you could send it to the museum or library for preserving. I did not find any old stuff in my house, but mom has ever preserved the coins one hundred years ago, but the value is too high. I guess it will more valuable for hundreds of years and our grandson, grandson may benefits from that we still keep the coins.
@p1kef1sh (45681)
3 Feb 10
Oh yes. Keep the coins. They will increase in value.
