Religion ... fruits or nuts?

I recall many years ago, there was a priest who visited the school where I attended. He spoke about many different things, but religion was the main topic. He said something that has stuck with me to this day: "God wants spiritual fruits and not religious nuts". What a statement to make ... so insightful. What do you think?
