How many times do you try to set up new account before you give up? I was about to set up an account on one of very popular sites. I have no idea about user name not already taken.

They usually give you a list that you can use other than the one you wanted

Oh my! I hate when this happens. Luckily on GPT sites and the like I generally don't have any issues because not too many people are members or you can usually just use your email to sign up, which is of course unique to you. But when making free e-mails or joining a site that's super popular..Well, it's definitely hard! I sometimes will just add some random numbers at the end or use some of their suggestions. It takes too long to think up a good, one-of-a-kind screen name.

I gave up after 11th attempt, including same user name I use on many sites, my mother, my father and the rest of my family names. The problem is that I try to have user name easy to remember and same password in case I will not save it...

I sometimes run into that problem. I usually am able to get the user name that I want, although I have a couple of backup names in mind if, for some reason, the name I want is taken.

Maybe you could use an abbreviated phrase as a user name. One of my cats is named Captain Morgan, so for example I could shorten the phrase "my cat Captain Morgan" to "mycacamo".

You can get through it at the second shot itself if you add some numericals to your username. Try it the next time you want to register somewhere. Also you can just have some meaningless alphabets put together. This also works. Good Luck!

My husband and I have been very lucky with our user names. We are pretty consistent with the same user name, and if it's taken for some bizarre reason, we can put a 1 or something behind it, and usually get the one that we want. If all else fails, we can put our birth year behind it, or something.

Oh yeh, what a pain in the neck that is. I remember when I first started to sell on Ebay years ago, every one of the names I had picked was already taken. I must have tried at least 15-20 times. I ended up doing what they said to do on Ebay. First pick your favorite color, red for me. Then pick your favorite pet, kitty for me. Then pick your favorite animal, I picked hawk. So my name on Ebay for years now has been redkittyhawk, haha! But that's ok, no one else has it, lol!

Yes, this has happened to me quite a bit. I will just change it to another user name instead. I always seem to create unique user names for many different accounts. No problem. I do wonder how can someone else think of that same user name as I did. I was thinking that I was the only person that knew of this name..

I always get the "username taken" issue whenever I want to set up another gmail account. What annoys me is with that system it always comes back with suggestions which don't fit in with what I wanted, usually with random numbers next to them. I wonder how sometimes a very unique username to me can already be taken and wonder if the systems just don't want you to have your first choice, lol. I usually keep plugging away till I manage to get something as close to what I wanted as possible.

I only have two nicks that I usually use with 2 or 3 variations for each. If I can't register any of them I just register with some random nick that comes to my mind at that moment. At last if the site isn't that important to me. If it is than I simply try to come up with a good nick. Even if its rather hard to find one that hasn't been already takes unless you go for those crazy ones like XxXTakashyXxX$123124 and so on.. :)

I have had that problem too. I hate it when I choose one and it is already taken. I like to use the same one most of the time and it makes it hard when it is taken by someone else. Take care.

don't you think that some people may copy your user name, because they have hard time creating their own?

I try about 5 times before officially giving up. :D, I mean I'm not that patient nor do I have the time to waste to sit there thinking of user names. I just shrug it off and try to find a different website with the same things, or think of one really quick and explain to people who ask why it's so wierd. Saves time and you get a user name.

Well, I've only been here and yuwie, and I've kept the same name. I landed on myLot quite by accident when searching for information, and because I wanted to reply to the discussion which turned up as a result of the search, I had to join. I had no time to think about a username (didn't even realise there was such a thing) and I have been thankful ever since that the one I chose was not available. It made me think a little more deeply and I settled on cloudwatcher, which I have used ever since.

It happened to me many times when I refuse to add numbers behind my proposed username. But I found a trick that is to add a few numbers behind the username and I am able to sign in easily. I don't understand why alphabets alone is very disappointing and it will come back to tell us to choose a new username.

sound easy, but how will I remember my user name after few months if I am not active on the site? I can make name plus number and it shows that is already taken. I didn't see many people with my user name, shocking someone took my favorite...

Hello Pola, When it comes to my user-name, i strongly believe no one is stupid enough to duplicate my name since they knew it's school related name. but when it comes to my first name then there was a time when i experienced that so i tend to change it make it look similar but not the same, and i hate it when some one already took my fav. username

It used to happen a lot to me and I generally used to end up with a weird username that I won't like or I won't remember. Now I am with one user nsme that I do not find it anywhere and get it on first attempt. Now thats the user name I use every where for new registrations. I suggest that you also come with one such unique user name and avoid frustration.

It has happened a couple of times. A bit jarring but nothing too much to worry about. I just add some numbers at the end of my name. Many times, a random combination. I mean, the chances that anyone has picked the same name and the random number combination, well its kind of low, I believe.
