Last month, we have a quiz in our communications theory and my instructor ask about the advantage of AM over FM and FM over AM. I did not write anything about this question because we did not discuss yet. Can you give me the answer because the book that I am reading is hard to understand or not in detail.

As some other post said FM means frequency modulated and AM is amplitude modulated. In general the frequency modulated signals have better quality than one with amplitude modulated, but on the other hand the AM signal can reach a higher area than an FM signal. So in the everyday life, if an station wants to transmit a signal for a very density populated area, that at the same time is not very big in extension, it would transmit a FM signal because they are reaching big quantities of people in an small area, so for that you want a high quality signals, now on the other hand if you want to transmit in a rural area, which are generally not as density populated as big cities but they are more scattered (which means a big area), then the signal that is typically transmitted is AM.

Thanks for your respond, this will me a lot in my study. How does the population density of a certain area affect the signal.

AM over FM:
Easy circuits for the Modulation and Demodulation process.
Once upon a time the AM transmitter was cheaper to make than the FM
Longer Range. Esp. The short wave that travels by ionospheric propagation can travel all over the world with a Transmitter of sufficient Power Output.
FM over AM:
Less affected by white noise as white noise "rides" as amplitude so "corrupts the signal, whereas the signal alters the carrier frequency so noise cannot enter the modulated signal.
A smaller Power amplifier for the range of FM is not much, to be precise is by LOS propagation at the carrier frequencies.
Due to finite range the same carrier frequency could be allotted to other stations beyond the range. But with the coming of satellites to over come distance restrictions, this has changed.
Due to availability of bandwidth stereo transmission of audio is possible.
High Fidelity of Reception.

Thanks for your response sir. How about the PM compare to FM, What are the advantages of these two modulation compare to each other.

Frequency modulation and Amplitude modulation are different. It is generally known that Frequency Modulation produces better sound than the Amplitude Modulation (if I'm not mistaken).
Generally, they both have some uses AM are generally used to broadcast News as well as the FM to broadcast or air Entertaining Music.
