Blind people --- why do we see them wearing dark glasses most of the time?

I am visually impaired (not blind, but have vision issues), and I don't wear dark glasses. I wear prescription glasses that change from light to dark depending on how much sunlight there is (Transitions). My eyes have a hard time focussing on any one thing for any length of time due to a problem with my eyes, and so they keep going all over the place. Fully-sighted people sometimes tell me that I roll my eyes a lot and that they are all over the place. Wearing dark glasses might hide that, but I like my Transitions lenses. So, some blind and visually-impaired people wear dark glasses because their eye problems might be a bit distracting to some fully-sighted folks.

Hi Nonew3,
Thanks for sharing. After a long while, this is the first response that I have commented to. I agree that that might be one of the reasons why other visually-impaired people like to wear dark glasses. It is worth noting that consideration to others also come into play. More than that, one should be more concerned of the health benefits he gets by using it. Have a good day!

Never having been blind and never having really known a blind person I can only afford to hazard a few guesses. My first thought is that they wear the glasses to protect their eyes from environmental hazards that they are unable to see. The next thought is that they may be able to sense light and dark and the changes between light and dark could bother them to a certain extent because it is such a drastic change at times.

Hi Dorannmwin,
I believe a blind person wears dark glasses because his eyes are sensitive to light, too. I am sure, they also want to protect their eyes from any outside elements. Unlike us people who can see, we can always avoid those about to come in contact with our eyes because we see them. It must be one of the reasons then.
Others may have different reasons according to the kind of defect they have. Others may do it for cosmetic purposes. Still I heard that others do it to "fake being blind" as they go around begging.

To a person who has lost most of their sight through macular degeneration, bright light is usually painful. There may also be other eye diseases for which this is true, also. Another thought: Some people can be totally blind, but their eyes look normal. Passersby would not consider giving alms to a person whose eyes appeared normal. Case in point, my son is blind in one eye and has been since birth. He can only see light and dark out of that eye. However, it appears to be normal. I'm sure this must be true of other people.

Hi Bellis,
Yes, other blind people's eyes may look normal. My friend's daughter has been born blind and except for a frequent batting of the eyelashes, eyes appear normal. But she needs to wear dark glasses for protection. Other blind people are sensitive to light.
Because of hard times, there are fake beggars who wear dark glasses in order to pass as blind. I personally know of one of these cases in the past.

Hi Bingchen,
Yes, they are entitled to what what they want to do. And as you said, wearing dark glasses is just one of them.
They might see it fit to wear dark glasses for valid reasons, too. They might be doing it for protection from the light as some of them can sense light. Their eyes may be very sensitive to their eyes. Still others may opt to wear them for cosmetic purposes.

Some blind people can sense light, and the shades may help them from seeing that.
Also, a lot will do it out of consideration because some people find blind eyes kind of freaky if they are clouded over, or the way they seem to stare at people when they are actually seeing nothing.

Hi Nonersays,
You are right. There are blind people who see light and still others are too sensitive of the light. So they maybe wearing dark glasses because of the light. But I still see most of them wearing those glasses at night time. So, they may have other reasons then. They maybe hiding their damaged eyes in consideration to other people because some blind people's eyes are not good to look at.

I'm also as puzzled as you - blind people wearing dark sunglasses. Rarely have I seen some without those.
I assume they are using this to hide their eyes from everybody. So as to avoid being pitied.
Have a good day.

Hi Joseline,
Yes, there are still others who don't wear dark glasses, but only very few. Maybe they also do it for cosmetic purposes. Some blind people may do it to protect their eyes from glare. Others are sensitive to light. Because most of the other blind people wear dark glasses, I think it has become a "fad" for them? Whatever --- lol.

I suppose it all depends on the severity of the blindness,
I guess people wear dark glasses because they prob have dis-figured eyes, and some may not even have the eyes in the form that we are used too.
So I guess its for the consideration of us able sighted people.
Also some people may have extra sensitive eyes, I am able sighted and when the sun is out in the summer or even in winter I have to wear sun glasses as my eyes as really sensitive to light and the sun.
So I guess theres a number of reasons.

Hi Benny,
Yes, that's true. There are different reasons why the blind people wear dark glasses. They may have very sensitive eyes because of their ailment and they need to use dark glasses to shield their eyes from light. Others may be doing it for cosmetic purposes. Others may have done it in consideration of other people who can see their different-looking eyes.
Do you know that some "enterprising" and lazy ones wear dark glasses and become fake beggars? There are even others who pretend to be lame and sickly in order to ask money from others.

Sometimes, they wear them out of consideration for other people because their eyes are cloudy looking due to their blindness and they feel that people will stare. Others are sensitive to the sunlight because their lids do not close properly and their eyes dry out or can get burned. Some wear them to distract from the fact that they are blind so people will treat them more normally.

I think these are really very valid observations. The reasons for wearing dark glasses may vary from person to person. For the blind, maybe they need it more to protect their eyes from the glaring light of the sun.
In very few cases (as in the movies), some people wear sunglasses to pretend they are blind and then ask money from passers by.

Hi Codeofuniverse,
Yes, maybe to "suggest" that they are blind, or maybe just to satisfy other reasons that each of them has. Maybe some wear them because their relatives might have seen other blind people doing this and they just follow it. Or maybe, some wear them for protection from the sun's rays.

hi! i guess blind people wear dark glasses every wear, because they don't want us to see their eyes, becaues as we know, the eyes of the blind people are pale and look strange and maybe they feel ashamed about it

Hi Phoenix8606,
Must be one of those reasons, too. Some blind people have different-looking eyes and they wear glasses in consideration of other people. Some may be wearing dark glasses for protection. Some may do it for cosmetic purposes, too. Reasons may vary from blind to blind.
