Do you keep up with your work credits for your future Social Security benefits?

We just got a hard learning lesson. My husband has obstructive severe sleep apnea, along with other medical issues. He was always self employed. I applied for SSA disability for him a few weeks ago, only to find out that he doesn't have enough work credits in the last ten years to receive benefits. I have enough work credits, but he can't use mine, even though we have always filed jointly. Now, there will be no way for him to receive the credits. He is unable to work. I'm just sorry that I wasn't smart enough to check this out before we really needed it.
