I pretty much hate cell phones, but have one as my daughter insists I have one for emergencies since I have her child often. But I recently (longstory) got a new phone that comes with 2 months free internet access. Stupid, I thought. But always trying to learn the new things, move into the 21st Century, last night I tried the internet on my cell phone. What part of stupid did I forget!!! It is so stupid! Trying to read an email on that tiny little screen, and scroll down constantly as a 2 inch screen doesn't allow for to many words at once, tiny little letters, and just a major pain in the back side to do! I answered several of my posts here at MyLot and thought, good grief, I could have answered all these and posted a dozen others in the time it took to answer 3 posts. IT was so stupid. Did I mention how stupid it was? So, I don't understand why people do internet on cell phones. Also, playing games on it... that screen is so small, things on there are smaller and slap me silly and call me stupid, but where in the world is the fun of it when you have to work so hard just to see it!!!

Cellular phones are in-demand here in the Philippines. I think everyone here now has a CP, even kids got one now. My Nokia 5320 XpressMusic has an internet access. It's free! I think it's cool! Cause when I'm out of town, I can always check on my e-mails and other networking sites without going to net cafes and without even spending money. Try getting bigger phones if you're having a hard time reading small letters for your convenience.. Have a good day! =)

I got a Pantech IMpact - opens up and full keyboard and larger keys that don't stick. But still....I'd rather just wait till I get on the PC to read my email than go through that again! I guess great if it is all you have to get connected with. I dont' think I'd bother at all!

Hi coffeebreak!^^ It's been a while. I used to surf the internet using my cellphone when I was still a cellphone addict. But I rarely checked my emails in my cellphone because just like what you described, it's too time-consuming to do it especially when your cellphone screen is small. I only used to download songs and pictures and chat using my cellphone before. I have never used it to myLot. I used to have a pocketpc that also functioned as a cellphone and that I used before in myLotting because it's like a palmtop. I never use my cellphone now in surfing the net because it's kind of a bother and I prefer to use the desktop or a laptop now. I would use my pocketpc to surf the net while I'm on travel but it's broken now. But I think nowadays, there are lots of high-tech cellphones with a bigger screen, and some are touch screen, where internet surfing is okay too. A lot of people here are using cellphones like that and places with free wi-fi access are usually full of people with cellphones like these. There's the Starbucks, Mcdo, and other places where you can just order a coffee or a french fries and eat it for over an hour just to be able to use the free wifi.^^;;

Touch screen is too much for me too. But I would like a bigger screen so I can view pictures better.^^ There's this cellphone I've been eyeing for a little while now. It's a flip phone and it has a wider screen than my current cellphone. It's not that high-tech too, just a regular cellphone only it's a flip phone. I used to want cellphones that are high tech but since I'm not a cellphone addict anymore, I'm okay with simple ones. But the cellphone I like is not available here in our country so I'm kinda sad about it.

I know. That is a problem too.. the pictures are so small you can't hardly see what they are! My daughter takes them and my son to and show me and I'm like "who/what is it? Where are they?" They are so small I don't get any enjoyment of seeing the pictures. Then what a complicated mess to get them off your cell phone and onto PC so you can have athem printed out!

I've seen those touch screens where you just pull your finger around to make the screen change. But that is more than I need or even want to deal with so I just got a regular one...full keyboard and a open up kind, but the screen is still small. I looked at many under my carrier, and the screens were all the same size.. This one has a little bigger letter size and the screen is a bit bitter if you use it opened up (you can use it both ways) but still... not big enough to do that much reading and typing and all. Yeah, WiFI is getting popular at alot of places these days.

Actually, internet on a cell phone made my life easier. Not everybody gets an internet capable phones just to play games or get on social sites or to get on mylot. I have blackberry 9700 & I don't have any problem reading emails on my phone. I use my phone for work related stuff as well. I work for a company that has contract with Korean Embassy. I do translation work for them. A lot of times, they post different avaliable work on websites. If I have waited to get home, have my dinner & get on a computer like some suggested, I would've lost out on 10's of thousands of dollars in jobs I could've picked up. Not everybody wants to or can carry a bulky laptop around with them all the time. I don't feel like everytime I need to send a case file or case related photos, drive all the way home, fire up a computer, download pictures and/or files on to my computer, send them & go back out to job site just to find out 45 minutes later, I have to do it all over again. I don't have any games on my phone. I don't go on line from my phone to do it either. I don't listen to any music on my phone. But that's just me.

In your case, it probably is a life saver. But then you use it intelligently and for a purpose. I went online to a web page, and couldn't even read what was there it was so small. If they'd just make the screen bigger and the print stronger, that would be an enormous help! Glad to hear someone is using a cell phone intelligently!

i have a totally different opinion on this . i think that internet on phone is a revolutionary idea.we dont have to get on to the pc all the time to get connected. we can chat and send emails on our mobiles. and thats really great. suppose your pc has broke down or is crashed due to birus what will you do? at such times the cell phones are most useful. i am out most of the time and 'coz of that i cant get to a pc for internet access and so i use my cell phone to get the access. we are moving into a new age and most of our works in the future are gonna be done on internet . also we do social networkig on internet .there has to be an alternative to the gud old computer and that alternative is our cell phones.ofcourse the screen is small and words are tiny but hey with comming technology this will improve too. we should be ready for all the changes in the coming future and this is one big change . i wish we could use mylot on cell phones as well :D

I did MyLot on the cell while on the internet! I checked my email and answered all the comments I had to my posts and others. Took my like 15 mintues to make 2 comments. I could have made those three and a couple dozen more on the PC! I just finally stopped as the tiny screen and reading 4 words per line and scrolling down and moving across... I like to sit still when I read, not run around the block! But you are right... technology is always coming up with new things... where would be be without the refridgerator!! And yeah, the internet and mobile devices are here to stay and only become more and more common day things. I guess if the screen was bigger and easier to read, it might not be such a inconvenience. But that is how the current generation is... they only know small.. they never had larger so they don't think there is any other way to be. My grand daughter - 9 years old... can pick up a cell and have it figured out in minutes! Took me longer than that to figure how to turn the dang thing on!!!

I had my computer crash once and I lost everything. My hubby had to do a fresh install of everything. I lost photos, downloads, other things which I can't replace. My network email went belly up too, so for awhile until we got the issue straightened out, the only way I was able to email for a short while was from my cell. I used my laptop too sometimes but I relied heavily on my phone for about a week, so I was very glad to have it.

yes u r right ....but i was talking about a mobile site for mylot like wap.mylot.com something like that ....nowadays there are these sites which remove the unnecessary things and keep fewer things making the site less uncomfortable and smooth accessible . if mylot creates such a site then posting and reading will be more easier.....

Hi coffeebreak . Since 7 years the only cellphone i had , everyone of them had the internet connection and massive collection of games and applications downloaded from the internet . So the last thing that i used my cellphone to was to call my friend's ... In this days the cellphone is evolving to become just another on-hand computer wich just has an option to make calls and not a cellphone wich imitates a computer.

Yeah they are becoming mini computers too. And yeah.. they started out as a phone, but have evolved into so much more, that soon, no one will be using the phone feature and say "you do what on your cell? Make calls.. are you kidding me?!?!?! Why don't you come out of the dark ages!!!!!!"

Well yes , that's true . The cellphone is on the fastlane to the mini computer and for the calls they will invent something ealse .. like people allredy use the bluetooth headphones , and probably the next step willby the fusion between the cellphone and the bluetooth headphone vith voice commands ... It's an idea , isnt it?

Well I don't think that internet in the cellphones is totally stupid, it is just not for everybody, but there are people that really used, for example, people because of the nature of their work has to be in the streets all the time, like real state agents or sales people, for this people this is a very good way to be connected with customers and coworkers while they are not at the office, sometimes internet in cellphones is good also if you are in place that you don't know and you get lost, the internet can help to reach your destination, and that is without talking about the gps feature that cell phone has. I personally don't have internet in my cell phone because I don't need it, for the nature of my job I work in front of a computer all day, and obviously if you have a computer in front of you, you don't want to go to your cell phone, that is something that is not very smart.

Hmmm. Well, then we can say everybody survived just fine without airbags and seatbelts and child safety seats, without being tested for lead, without carbon monoxide detectors, without wearing helmets on motorcycles, bikes, skateboards, and rollerblades. I do feel that we have gone overboard on safety things but just because I feel that way doesn't mean those things are going to go away. Cell phones certainly aren't a NEED either. Many many of us have all sorts of 'luxury' items that we use daily which many people would say are not necessary. However, they are necessary to our lives, since we would not have spent the money or time acquiring them if we did not feel they were necessary. I love my cell phone, the only time I don't like it is if I get random calls for other people or some numbnut who was never supposed to call me called me and keeps calling me back. Outside that, I use it as a tool to SERVE me, as I should.
• United States
6 Feb 10
Well we can say that people would survive before without using the most necessary things that we have today, cell phones and any other technological gadget is used to make our life more easy and increase our productivity, for example people with "Out of office " jobs, they probably meet their deadlines before, but now, with these advantages their productivity can be increased so they can make more money, and this is America, so time is money. I do agree with you that children shouldn't have cell phones, especially the ones that have camera. This is totally irresponsible from parents.

I think that part of it is as simple as 'you get used to it.' When I first got a phone that was capable of internet use, I didn't intend to really use it, and just occasionally hopped on to see if anyone had replied to a roleplaying game I was involved with. However, as time went on, I found myself using it more and more. I do tend to write shorter emails or posts if I'm doing it from my cell phone than if I'm using my computer, but I've gotten to the point where I feel as if I enjoy being connected when I can't be at home, and I would really miss having my web access via phone if I lost it.

I agree with you on most of those things! I really can't talk on the phone while doing some tasks, because I'm going to forget important parts of the task at hand! And people who talk on their cell phone, text, or browse the net or whatever while we're face-to-face having lunch or having a conversation drive me batty! What I tend to use my cell phone for when not at home is quick checks of things during my break at work, or while I'm waiting in a slow line, or if I have to be away from home all day or some such. I think for me a lot of it is that my 'close' friends are all people I talk to online, so if I'm away from them for entire days at a time, it feels the same way as having to be away from offline friends for a long time. So I like to have the cell to stay connected!

YOu are right about that. It is all in what you need/use it for and the more important, the more acceptable you will be. I don't ever want to be so buzy or have so much going on that I can't "stop and smell the roses" on a beautiful day. I dont want to chat while I do grocery shopping as I'll miss something I need and be mad when I get home and it will take me longer to do the shopping. I don't want to read my email from others, while Ia m with my kids or friends. I want the person I am sitting across the table from to be talking to me, not someone else on their cell.

I have a different opinion. I like to access the internet by the cellphone. My cellphone is Samsung I900 and I think its screen size is good enough. I like watching movies from it most of the time. And sometimes I will check my emails or communicate with my friends by the chatting software. I think it is very good to use the Skype to make the free call by a cellphone. The result is very clear and it is so convenient. I won't bring my laptop when I go out. So the cellphone can let me get online and this is a good method. I love China

I watched a show on mine the other night...shut it down after about 15 minutes. Just to much work to squint at that tiny screen and hold the thing and have it so close to my face and all. All you have to do is get an unlimited call time...TMobile has that - $49 for unlimited calls anytime, anywhere. But hey, if it works for you.. that is great. I just think it has gotten out of hand.. when I am shopping and am startled by someone saying something behind me and I turn to help out or whatever and there they are... all but talking to themselves via bluetooth!!! And I have had my fill of near accidents due to people talking on their cells instead of paying attention to their driving.

It helps if you know what you are doing, though, and also you have to have a really good phone or it is, as you say hopeless. Regular webpages do not work well on most phones, but there are applications that are specially formatted just for cell phone users. Yes, I am serious. I have had an unlimited data plan on my smart phone for several years. It is not a substitute for having a computer, but when I need to access information, from anywhere, then the information is there. The font I use is pretty readable and my color screen has excellent resolution. Mainly I use it to look up stuff in my web-based relational database. There I keep serial numbers, phone numbers, addresses, encrypted passwords, and much more. Before I bought a Garmin Nuvi, I also used my cell phone for GPS. That I admit was a bit frustrating on a 2" screen, but still better than being lost out somewhere in the dark night. I call e-mail photos to publish on my blog and send tasks to my online calendar and scheduling service. I use the cellphone's internet access to record all of my expenditures in real-time in order to keep my budget balanced at all times. Before I used a PDA to do that, but then had to reconcile it on the computer every night when I got home. I agree with you about the games though.

Sounds like it works for you. It is just that it is all so small. I use a green ledger page for all my money transactions and things like that! I am still in the 20th century ont hat one and it hasn't failed me yet, so I think I will just stay there! Thing is.. you literally have your life in your hands... what if you loose that phone? Even if you have a back up somewhere (how many think/remember to back up their cell phones?) now someone else has your life in their hands. That is just to scary for me.

oh i feel the same way. hate these cell phones. i had to get one so i could "beep/walkie talkie" style to my daughter in florida. it saves on phone bills since you can talk/beep back and forth all day to anyone that has this type for just 1 dollar a day./ thats the only thing i like about the darn thing. i tried unlimited once on it, walkie talkie, regular phone calls, web, etc. and found out i was paying for way more then i use. i went back to the pre pay deal. i've had 8 dollars left on there for 3 months from the 10 i put on it. thats how much i use the stupid thing. now when it comes to my pc, i use it constant.

I am using an Apple Iphone and it has a larger screen compared to other mobile phones... I love surfing the web using my Iphone because I can get to see real text and images! Updating my status in Facebook and chatting with family and some close friends in Yahoo Messenger is indeed fun! Yahoo Messenger in Iphone is almost the same as the one you use in your computer or laptop... You can clearly see your friend's profile picture and status and IM them without any trouble.. I enjoy surfing more using my Iphone when I'm at SM Southmall and Mall of Asia because they offer wifi service for free! If you want to enjoy mobile internet, buy a touchscreen mobile phone like Iphone.. :)

People create aps and other things for cell phones beceause it is a good way in which to make money. When it comes down to it, that's the point. And, you have those out there that can't go five minutes without the ability to check their e-mail or favorite social networking websites that its worth the small size of the screan if it means staying connected. I don't find the features stupid, but I simply don't bother using them. I can't justify the expence. I'm home all the time. So why use it for net?

I agree. Money is always in there some where! And I agree... I don't see why people have to be so addicted to the cell phones and "staying connected" online. I have friends on line but they get time just like local friends do (I'm here on Mylot, aren't I?!) But if I miss a day online, I won't die, but I think many think they will if they don't have a cell phone in their hands... my daughter being one of them.... 6500 text messages sent/received in one month!!! I'm sorry, but I can't see that she has so much to say that that has to be such a huge part of her life. I know her cell bill is high andshe is always short on money to pay it. I just can't see the justification when she can call them on the phone and say what she has to say. But to each his own, I guess!!! Drives me nuts, but it'd drive her nuts without one!

I think there may be reasons why they provide internet access on cellphones. One, when you're always travelling and do not have a laptop, you would probably utlize what you have despite a few inconveniences (font size and screen sizes etc.). It's better than no internet access at all. Two, it can just be a part of the marketing strategies that mobile companies do since everybody carries atleast one or two cellphones with them.. it's an added feature. I'd prefer to to go online at home where my connection is better and faster. However there would be times when I need to access the internet but I'm not at home or there are no cafes nearby. My only resort is to use my phone. It's a little tedious and takes a lot of patience but I don't really mind as long as I get to do what I need to do. At the end of the day, it's still up to the consumer where she wants to access the internet from. If you have a faster internet connection at home via PC or laptop and you're more at ease on it, then that's great. But if you don't, atleast you're given a choice to either go to the nearest internet cafe or use your mobile phone instead. :D

Different strokes for different folks. Yeah, I know. I guess I just think that it is over used. Do you have to talk while doing the grocery shopping? I think it also just gives people so much to do, that they forget or don't pay attention to what they are doing and things get lost in the shuffle or accidents happen or things get mixed up.. all cause they were doing to much literally at once. I can see how it can be helpful, but WHY CAN'T THEY MAKE THE SCREENS BIGGER!!!!!

I can understand something like and iPod or iPad, or netbook, or even an iPhone since they are larger and of better quality, but not the internet on a typical cellphone. I am not into texting and such, and I only ever send the odd e-mail from my phone to let me husband know I'm going to be late (if I know he's doing something and don't want to interrupt him to come to the phone), but not usually. I have a phone for emergencies and phone calls. That's it!

That's me exactly. I dont' like cell phones and text messaging either unless just a quick note or one word answer. But these conversations back and forth - we could have talked on the phone and been done with it in a whole lot less time than it takes to text back and forth. My daughter gets angry at me for not texting her, but one sentence can often not be answered with one text back.. it requires more info and more texting back and forth. To much work, to much time wasted! Just call me!

I prefer mobile surfing more because I can mylot while on my bed.. :) Hahahaha.. :) Plus unlike the desktop mylotting I can better think about my thoughts on a single discussion and won't have to shift tabs. :) Those are personally the perks of mobile web and I'm thankful to technology for that. I saw this discussion earlier and after I had seen it, I was actually searching for it so I could respond lol. I am laughing right now =) I have internet on my cell phone with a data package. That includes browsing, email, instant messaging, text and photos, etc. I don't think it's stupid. Granted mobile internet is not quite the same as using a laptop or desktop. It will be better when I have 4G coverage and a phone that can stream and shoot video, but it doesn't mean I will even use it that much. I do use email constantly on my phone because that is how my hubby and I stay in touch during the day. I use IM and texting too on my phone if I'm out. I have used mylot mobile from my phone and yes it's a pain but it can be done. It's not something I do unless I anticipate having a lot of time to do nothing. The game thing... well I would agree with that.

And there is so much on a blog page or web site..how can all that fit onto a 2inch screen?!! It can't!!! Other than calls and text msg and an occassional photo (those to are so small you can't see what's going on in the picture) the only other thing I have used my cell phone for was an alarm clock (the new one has a really crappy one I can't use but the old one was perfect!) and to get 411 info on that free system 45562 or something like that. Most definately. "Hand held" is here to stay and will only get more abundant and versitile. And to the point that you either deal with it or loose. I remember when "cell" phones came out.. they were large!!! Weighed 2 pounds! And no screen! But at least you could see the numbers to push. I get the point of small and portable, but how small is to small? GOing to get to the point where vision is damaged in people cause they are looking/squinting at small screen all the time. MOral of the story... if you are looking for a good job for the future with steady income.... become an opthomologist or optomitrist!
