Hey mylotters, Maybe you can help me. I have 2 children, my oldest is my daughter who turned 5 in July. She used a pacifier until she was 3 months old, for some reason she started to refuse them and suck her thumb instead. At first it was cute, but now at 5 she can't kick the habit. I was told not to worry because she still has baby teeth. Now that she has started losing teeth and the adult teeth are growing in I am very concerned. The dentist recommended a device that is put at the roof of her mouth but that is very expensive. Does any one out there have any suggestions on how I can get her to stop? Has anyone had this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. My daughter sucked her thumb until she was 5 1/2.
People used to say to me "you don't see grown ups sucking their thumbs, she'll grow out of it!" But I had seen adults sucking their thumbs. Not in public admitedly, but whilst they were sleeping. Personally I find it disturbing.
She was nearly out of the habit at 3yo, but her father and I went through a very messy divorce and I guess she went back to it for comfort. I found, the more I paid attention to it and made a deal out of it (even just by telling her to take it out), the more she seemed to do it.
Is your daughter at school yet? That's when my daughter stopped. It was halfway through her first year at school and I guess the other kids and teacher may have said something to her, but she just seemed to stop. I also encouraged it with a reward. I told her that she could have any Barbie doll she wanted, if she stopped sucking her thumb FOREVER. And I left it at that. When she stopped, I came through with my promise.
I don't know how much help this is to you, but good luck with it.

Yes she is in school, but never sucks it there only at home, in the car and other places her peers don't see her. I have any told her I will get her any toy she wants if she stops. That didn't work. Hopefully she can stop before it because a dentists nightmare. Thanks for your response.

hi i know some of my cousins that used to thumb suck when they where little and all of them outgrew this habit, the only solution is to stop making the child stop to thumb suck because continually reminding them not to do it is also reminding them of the reflex to thumb suck, my suggestion is to try to focus them to other things that they might like to play with that requires both thier hands that way the habit will slowly fade away.
