to eat or not to eat

A few years ago, I was being brought to the emergency room several times due to an allergic reaction. I was clueless about what made me develop such a reaction. I didn't have any allergy history since I was born so I decided to go and see an allergologist. To my surprise, the tests that I went through showed results that I'm allergic to most of my favorite foods!
I tried to keep myself from eating them but then I feel really deprived and sad. Once in a while I get tempted to eat them and sometimes nothing happens but there are also times I do manifest mild allergic reactions. I can only limit my intake but I can never restrict myself completely of eating my favorite foods. It's really frustrating because I love to eat and now I need to narrow down my food choices.
How bout you guys? anyone have food allergies too? have you really removed them from your diet list or do you still eat them?

Hi diyonzi!^^
I have the same case! I was in college when I was brought to the hospital because of a severe allergy attack. It was my first time to have it and I was really clueless and I even thought I had SARS which was a very hot issue during those times. I thought I had contracted it inside the mall because that's where I started to sneeze vehemently, I couldn't breath properly, my eyes became itchy and watery, and after a while, my eyes swelled up. The doctor in the hospital even joked and said I was like a bumble bee. Which was not very funny. The doctor said it was probably what I ate at the mall which was strawberry milkshake and I forgot the other one. I received an injection that day. .

Wow. 12K?? That expensive, huh? I don't know if I can afford that. I think I'll just stick to what the doctors told me before.^^;; Staying away from chickens, eggs, crabs and all works anyway. I still enjoy eating other food which is allowed for me to eat. Only I'm always tormented when I see leche flan, cakes and other sweet stuffs that has tons and tons of eggs. I love them but I can't eat a lot of them anymore.^^;;

Yeah that goes for me too.. sneezing is the first sign of exposure to my beloved alllergens! lol Followed by itchy eyes, then I get teary-eyed and then yeah, not funny, but we really do look like bumble bees. Takes a lot of getting used to.. but it helps if you know exactly what causes your allergies.. so that you'll know which ones to avoid and which ones you can still enjoy. ;D
My skin allergy test cost around Php12K.. and that was 3 years ago. So expect that it may cost more today. I advice you avail of the allergy test.. you'd be suprised what else you're allergic too. :P I have a long list.. but I only RELIGIOUSLY avoid those on top 10 of my list. lol
Best regards! =)

Hi! thanks for sharing your view about food allergies. It's not really a rare condition. I know a couple of others who have allergies to other kinds of food too and allergic reactions also vary. With me, my eyes get all itchy when I eat small amounts of food that I'm allergic to. On more serious instances, my eyes become swollen and it's hard to breathe. Aside from certain foods, I am also allergic to dust and smoke. It's amazing how I survive living in the city! lol
You're lucky you don't have any allergies. You can enjoy everything and anything served on your plate. :D

it is really hard to have that kind of allergy.
because choices for foods are narrowed down to a few choices.
but some doctors recommend to eat those that are restricted to eat in just a small amount and gradually increasing to make your body get used to it and have the right antibodies build to fight your allergies.i was once allergic to shrimps and the likes and when im attacked by my allergy my face would swell like balloon and wont stop until i take my medicine.but as my doctor said i tried eating in small quantities of those foods that i have allergies.at first there were sign of my allergies but only mild so i started eating it in small quantities and until now i eat a lot of crabs and lobsters and not a trace of my allergies were present anymore.

I agree with you johndur. I think that may be one of the reasons why I still keep on eating foods I am allergic to. However I would not try doing that with eggwhites because I develop serious allergic reactions after eating even a small amount of it. I end up being rushed to the ER and have my dose of IV meds.. it's almost life threathening. With my other allergies like shrimps and other fish varieties, I can tolerate it very well.. usually one tablet of loratidine will do. lol
All in all my feelings towards having food allergies is a bit mixed. I hate it because I have to watch my food intake, I kinda love it because of the attention and concern I get from other people, most especially my loved ones. lol =)
thanks for sharing! ;D

Just so you know, you really should stop eating things that you've been shown to be allergic to. Each time you eat it, your reaction will be slightly different. There's no way of telling whether you will have a particularly bad reaction to the food or not each time you eat it.
Severe allergic reactions can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal, so in my opinion you would do well to avoid the foods, however bad it may feel. Often there are substitutes for certain foods which will taste very similar but without the reaction. You should try to look for some of these as you would feel better.

I guess you're right. I'm really trying to avoid them. Specially the one on top of my allergy list: EGGWHITES. I know that eating it is really a NO-NO. My allergologist, however, told me I can eat the others on the bottom of my list BUT in moderation of course. :D It's just sad that I dont have the same freedom in eating as I had before.
Thanks for the advice.. ;D
