When I am on the computer I have my television on, mostly listening to it. I heard the sound the television makes when I turn it off. I thought it was a technical error for the television broadcast system. So I waited for a moment to see if it was coming back on. I even tried the remote to turn it back on or to change to another channel. Then that is when I smelled the electrical smell that comes with a malfunction or electrical breakdown. I got up and turned the telly off. As the story goes, I am one less television, it is burned out and gone for ever.
I had a friend once that would leave her television on when she leaves the house. I never leave my television on when I am leaving home. Because this very reason. It could've started a fire in my home if left unattended for a length of time.
My question is do you leave your television or any other appliances on when you leave the house?

I used to leave the television on when I was gone. When I first moved into my current apartment complex the manager handed me me some information. That info included tips for safety. One of the tips was to leave the TV on when you are gone, so that people will think someone is home. That way I would be less likely to be robbed. I wonder how many apartment complexes give tips like that! lol It just makes the place sound unsafe to live.
However, I don't leave the TV on when I am gone anymore. I just don't think it would do any good. I don't think it is necessary for safety reasons, and I also want to save for electricity reasons.

Hi Anti. I went out today looking for another one, but didn't purchase one. I will just wait and see what the future hold for me, it is not a necessity. If the cable keep going up I am not going to be able to afford it (cable). That is my hold up for now. Why have a new television and can't afford the cable. lol.

Of course, I don't leave the house without unplugging all the appliances like television, aircon, radio, electric stove, etc.. you know, it is not safe to leave your appliances turned on or plugged... it may cause fire.. it's better to be safe than sorry... in fact, i'm OC (obssessive-compulsive) when it comes to these things.. maybe, i've got the genes from my mom..

I always turn off all electrical appliances when I leave my house including the television set. The only thing that is running when I am out of the house is the refrigerator. I think it is really unsafe to leave appliances on when nobody is in the house. There is always the risk of possible fire.

I simply turn off my tv when I am not useing it. this applies when I am at home or not. I do sometimes leave a radio palying while I am in the house even if I am not listien to it. but I will shut it off once I leave the house.

Of course not. It is very unwise to leave the television on when you leave the house or even just the room. For me it is always best to practice conserving electricity. Thus, always make sure that everything are turned off because you will just waste electricity to leave it on for no reason.

When I leave my house, my parents always told me to leave on a television set because then it gives the illusion that somebody is still occupying the house, thus deterring any potential invaders. It must have been successful because to this day, I haven't had a single break-in attempt, and neither have my parents

no.....i don't leave any appliances befor leaving my house .......because electricity bill will increase and sometimes it leads to short circuits. so its better we switch off the appliances before leaving house and consume electricity so that it will be efficient for us also. !!!

I do on very rare occasions, although I know I should not. Ideally I would never leave washer, dryer or dishwasher when I leave either. It has gotten easier not to since I am home most of the time now.

Whew, Chevee! I am SO happy that you found the source of that smell! Man! That is scary!
I never leave anything like that on when I leave the house. I've had a few things burn up while plugged in and also had a nasty flood from the washing machine. Thank goodness I was home at the time! I'd have hated coming home and finding the basement flooded!
That is actually what made me realize that things should be turned off when no one is home. Sometimes, I'll go one step farther and unplug things when I am going to be away from home for awhile, usually things that heat up, just in case. All these new "instant-on" things liked TVs, microwaves, electric heaters, etc. still pull electricity when they're turned off. I actually worry more about an electrical fire from the wiring in the walls than about appliances going bad.
I won't be leaving the house for awhile right now. We've already had about 18 inches of snow fall and the storm is gaining momentum, not losing it. I doubt anyone will be going anywhere tomorrow, except emergency personnel and snow plows/salt trucks, of course.
I'm going to try to get out tomorrow or Sunday and make a snow angel. If I don't get buried in the snow, I'll post pictures of it. But, if it's too deep, I'll probably end up building an igloo. LOL
